Hi first off I have a 1990 Turbo AWD talon with 100k even on the clock. Here are my mods :

apexi turboback exhaust
turboxs RFL BOV
free mods
K&N filter
MBC
act 2600 clutch
Evo 3 ported exhaust manifold
Evo 3 o2 housing
255lph hp fuel pump

This being said when my timing belt snapped and my valves bent ( pistsons were only lightly touched) I decided on doing a full rebuild while my dad was under the car and able to do all the labor for me.

As far as my goals with the car, I want to have a daily driven but raced occasionally car with evo3 16g on high boost.

I've compiled a list of everything I want to do and it's quite pricy but I want to do it all while he's under there:

Ferrera Valves
Timing belt
Water pump
Upper and lower seal sets
Cometic headgasket
3g Lifters
Ferrera Valve guides - Intake and Exhaust
Balance shaft removal kit
Tensioner Pulley
Belt tentioner adjuster
Mitsu Oil pump with castle plug
Aeromotive A1000 AFPR
Aeromotive A1000 AFPR install kit
AC belt ( don't have one on right now)
Lower timing belt cover ( ripped up)
ARP head studs and main studs
NGK "1-step Colder" Copper Spark Plugs
Magnecor 8.5mm Wire Set
Fidanza Adjustable Cam Gears
Mitsubishi 4G63 H-Beam Rods
Manley 4G63 Eclipse/Talon/Evo 6.5mm Valve Stem Lock
OEM crank pulley
Oil squirters
Dual Valve Springs with Dual Valve Spring Valve Seat Bases
650cc fuel injectors ( what is best brand?)

Now besides those which I still want to be evaluated on, I have some questions with the following products I think i may want to go but am not sure on some things:

2g Pistons
2g Piston rings
1G DSM OEM Engine Bearings

Is this correct? I want standard bore and since I have a 1g i assume I need 2g piston rings if I'm putting in 2g pistons, but what about engine bearings, do I have to get those 2g as well?

Is it worth getting a new 02 sensor and knock sensor to replace the old ones?

Also, I noticed my lights were starting to get dim so I figure my alternator is going out, worth getting a 90 amp one?

Ok so there's everything, I basically figure this is EVERYTHING I will possibly want but I want to see if there's anything im missing, or perhaps if some of my brand choices are incorrect or there are better things out there. Thanks for the help in advance as any comments, suggestions, or help would be appreciated.

From what I looked up when I did my engine buld that looks pretty good. If you are looking to save some money and still have good performance you can go with Supertech Valves

Also, which I don't see on your list, I would get Supertech valve springs.

On the list I had Dual Valve Springs with Dual Valve Spring Valve Seat Bases from machv.com are those as good / worse/ value wise?

Are you getting cams? With some aftermarket cams, you won't need new/upgraded valve springs. If you are planning on running lots of boost (and it looks like you are) I'd suggest bigger injectors. You'll see that it will not be long before the 650's are maxed out. And it'd be nice to spend money on them only once.

Just get some like Fuel Injector Clinic (FIC) 850's or something. Are you going to run nitrous? If so, get some forged pistons/rods like a Wiseco/Eagle combo. Also, buy a gasket set for doing the head. It includes everything you need (int./exh. manifold gaskets, turbo gaskets, water pump, spark plug well, throttle body, etc. etc.)

Good luck!

no nitrous here, but yeah I guess I will want bigger injectors. Anyone else have anything to comment or comment on the 850ccs themselves? Also what kind of cams should I get for my setup?

I own an SAFC2 just haven't installed it yet but I plan on using it getting a DSMchip, MAF blow thru system with GM maf and translator, along with an evo 3 turbo and fmic.

Get some Forced performance cams. That or HKS if you have the money. Comp cams are great too. FPcam1 is comparable to the HKS 264. FPcam2 is comparable to the HKS 272. Both FPcam1/2 are both custom grinds made by Comp. 264 intake, 272 exhaust is good, or you may want to go 272 intake, 272 exhaust.

Edit If you have all these supporting mods, you can push the 14b to its limits. If you get a 16g, you will quickly discover it's too small for you. I would suggest getting a 50-trim of some kind.

In the list was

Aeromotive A1000 AFPR
Aeromotive A1000 AFPR install kit

so the answer is no I'm not using the stock FPR.

As far as too small goes I'm not really looking to get a turbo as big as a 50 trim, I just felt like doing all the mods listed in case I wanted to later. I also wanted a daily driven car with 0 miles on it like it will be when I'm finished.

If my goal is too small what should be downgraded as far as brand or actual product since I'm only using a 16g. Also will I still want better cams with just a 16g?

Anyone have any suggestions on those parts at the bottom I listed as if they are even worth replacing?

OK, I decided im just going to be running an evo 3 16g so I need help for products based on the goal that I'm just going to be maxing that turbo out and nothing larger.

What size injectors should I get? Should I keep the springs and retainers , pistons/rod combos I have listed?

Cams, cam gears?

Since you're replacing the valves, go with a set of oversized exhaust valves. You'll gain more on the top end.

Just remember that if you're using ARP's for the main studs, you'll need the block to be line bored (I'm sure you already know that).

The 'colder' spark plugs should be BPR7ES.

Dual valve springs would tell me that you plan on running this engine past the 7K redline. A 14B will run out of breath before that. Evo3 16G would be better, but at the price of a new Evo3 turbo, you can probably find a decent used 50-trim.

Go with OEM bearings. In fact, go with as much OEM as possible. You can't go wrong. Replace the knock and O2 sensors, even if they look good. I tried to keep my old knock sensor when I did my rebuild, but it crapped out shortly thereafter and gave me all kinds of knock problems and killed my performance at the track. Replace as much as you can now so you're not scraping your knuckles to replace it later.

Do some comparison shopping between the cost of the 2G pistons, rings, and price to have your 1G rods machined to fit those pistons. In my case, after doing the math, I was only $100 away from a set of forged pistons, and if I had to do it again, I would've gone with forged. If the price difference isn't that much between a set of forged pistons, and the cost of making the 2G pistons work, go forged. To be honest, you shouldn't need to replace your rods, especially if your engine's only suffered piston damage. Money on the rods can be spent elsewhere, 1G rods are plenty strong.

As for fuel injectors, FIC and Denso are good (Denso's are actually 660, I believe). Just make sure whoever you get them from gives you a flow sheet so you know how much each injector was actually rated for.

One more thing to add to this equation is fuel control. Check your ECU to see if you have an EPROM chip. If you do, order a chip from dsmchips.com. In most cases, a rechipped ecu will require minimal tuning necessary to make the engine run right. You should also invest in a 2G MAS since whatever turbo you plan on going with will most likely make you hit fuel cut with the stock MAS.

Thanks for the post, my goal is to just max out a 16g with my car and daily drive it / race it whenever I want so that's why I don't really want to go any higher than that turbo. Is this something I shouldn't be doing goal wise?

If I just use a 16g should I just use the 2g piston 1g rod combo? BTW where can I get some brand new 1g rods?

I plan on using HKS 264 intake and HKS 272 exhaust cams, so what type of springs and retainers should I look at getting?

If I did get a 50 trim, what exact turbo would I need? And also now I have to get a new manifold ( just picked up an evo 3 manifold ported) and external gate?

The manifold you have is fine. Quality 50-trim turbos would be a FP Green, or an SCM-50 from Precision turbo. A Mitsu 20G would be a fine turbo if you find one at the right price as well. If you find one that's around the same price as a new 16G, go with it, as long as it's in good condition.

OK so I could use the evo 3 manifold with a FP green turbo? What type of springs + retainers, cams, and piston and ring setup will I need now with that. Also what size injectors?

OK , after much deliberation I've decided evo 3 16g and about 350 HP is what I want. The idea of a 50 trim and such is too much. With that being said what is a new list of pistons / rods , spring and retainer , cams , cam gears, and other part combinations needed

what's up people, I still have yet to make a descision on my goal. I keep saying 16g is all I need but as I watch more videos I'm talking myself into something bigger.

In my rebuild I'm doing stock head, 2g pistons, and eventually I'll run a EvoIII 16g on there. I'm not worried about the 2g pistons being able to handle that. One thing I would suggest looking at, you said you have an ACT 2600, do you have a lightened flywheel? I'm getting a fidanza, but there are other choices that are not quite as light/tempermental, such as the ACT flywheel. Something to consider if you haven't already.
