I got a "Built" 6bolt motor with 5000 miles on it from a friend. A very respectable guy. I don't know how long its been without oil and I've had it for a couple months already. It just started an hour ago. Its limping right now because not everything is together yet. I just needed to confirm that it would run before putting everything else back together. Its on a NT Eprom ECU (my ecu is at my girls house :nono:), No MAF, and 1 bolt holding the O2 housing on, and its still loose so the o2 housing moves around. I put oil directly into the fill tube... I should have just pulled the valve cover and poured the oil on everything.

I think it sounds like loud Lifters/Valves. Maybe because the motor hasn't had oil in forever and the lifters are stuck?

I know the knocking is loud, but it just doesn't sound like rod knock of any sort. I've heard a lot of rod knock in my day... and it seriously just sounds like really loud lifters. Plus Rod knock isn't a consistent knock, And this is a consistent knocking sound.

What do you think?

Wait until you get everything you need, then start it.

Your gambling with a lot of variables, best to make sure everything is proper and in good working condition before your just dive right in *hoping* everything will pan out.

Sounds like lifters.

Lifters don't really sound super duper loud like that.have you pulled the pan to inspect the bearings?

Oh and if you want to know what I think, I think a car that is half put together shouldn't be started up.... because it's going to sound funny... and it's not really that safe.

Well its together. Its just I don't have the trans fluids done up and the MAF is missing. It has tons of synthetic lube LOL.

And no I haven't inspected anything except the top half. Which is beautiful. It honestly in person does not sound like rod bearing failure. The "Knocking" Sound, sounds like a super loud clap, like lifter. I honestly also have never heard lifters that loud before. But we'll find out tomorrow. Its new oil so I can prob save it and pull the oil pan.

I keep hearing people tell me its the lifters prob... Cause the motor hasn't had oil in it for like a year or so. So the previous owner told me I should just prime it first, till the oil pressure light goes off... or what I was thinking, since I have half a quart left over, to put it in a bowl and brush oil all over the cams, lifters n stuff... and maybe even put a few drops inside the cylinders to lube the rings.

I didn't have the motor running any longer than that video. I just didn't wanna spend any more money on a broken motor, so I had to know it was working.

If you've ever removed your lifters, primed them and let them drain then put them back in, upon initial start up they are REALLY loud, much like in the video.
It's possible he could have a collapsed lifter(s).

I'd take off the valve cover and rotate the engine by hand, making sure all the lifters and rockers are moving smoothly.

*On a side note, my co-worker couldn't start his B16 up after re-doing the cylinder head because of a collapsed lifter. Liquid is not compressible you know. I even told him to replace or clean them when he took it apart, now he has to start over.*

Collapsed lifter... How would this look? I have spare lifters I was going to throw in some ATF to clean out just in case.

Once again, the startup was just a confirmation. It lasted only the 10 seconds shown in the video. It was shut off right as the video stopped. Next startup will be when everything is completed, including my busted windshield. I have alot more work to do on the bottom side.

It really depends, I've never seen one first hand. I'd imagine the lifter would be binding or sticking and show some resistance while cranking over.
Or worst case be in pieces. On my original motor they were completely seized. I believe when the lifter collapses it's caused by being pumped up with oil as the cam rotates around to the "hump" and creates excessive resistance between the cam hump - rocker - and lifter.

I do not recommend ATF because it isn't that strong of a cleaning agent and would probably take days to break down oil deposits. Use brake clean or a similar high power cleaning agent.

Oh almost forgot, you know exhaust leaks can be esp. loud as well. We get GX and LX 470s with cracked manifolds that do make quite a bit of noise. Might want to tighten up the O2 housing for piece of mind.

Yeah someone else locally told me exhaust leak. But honestly I've never heard an exhaust leak sound like two peices of metal tapping each other. But, the O2 housing is pretty loose. I need to lookup to see what the size of the bolt is so I can get some new ones from autobone.

10mm X 1.25 is pretty much everything on our cars.

Exhaust leak = it's going to be loud since your not only dealing with exhaust to the atmosphere, but exhaust creating vibration between two pieces of metal.

Noise is gone. I pulled the valve cover and inspected everything, then lubed everything up... This video sucks for audio quality but just wanted to post it up.
