I just picked up this FP green today. I traded it for my GReddy 18g and o2 Dump. Only thing is, now i need a wastegate and 02 housing.

Do you think I got a good deal? Does the turbo look ok? (whats that white crap)

Looks like they might have been running leaded gas with it. That what my 60-1 looked like when I sold it. Ran 110+ octane leaded gas for 12,000 miles. o2 sensor never had any issues. Also could be lean. Spark plugs turn that color. As long as shaft play is good and she spins freely I'd say go for it.

I would recommend at least a retorqueing of all bolts and clamps. A thorough cleaning as well. Take 2 can of brake cleaner and, this is what I do, pull both housings off and clean the crap out of it. Clean the CHRA the best that you can too. Has worked every time for friends used turbos.

Good luck with the 50 trim. It will be fun.

The white stuff is carbon from race gas. Does it have any in and out play? I checked into this turbo also but it sounded to good to be true. I would look for a FP stamp somewhere and the compresser cover also.

There is side to side shaft play, but it seems minor....has about the same as i had on the 18g.

yeah, its got the fp stamp on it (you can kind of see it in the 2nd pic) and the 60 on the polished cover.

So what do you guys think? good deal? It sucks that I have to get a wastegate and o2, but its nice i have the turbo

It's normal to have some side to side play, what you want to look for is zero in and out play from the shaft. I know FP stamps BOTH the turbine housing and the compresser cover with there logo. Also the builder initials there name on the wheel also.
If it's a original green from Forced Performance then sure it's a good deal. Rock on :thumb:

Carbon is black. :p :)

The white is from the residual compound of lead that is found in leaded fuels as everyone else has mentioned. Looks like you got a killer deal. I am thinking of picking up it's bigger brother myself. :)

the fp isn't on the cover....its been tapped where they usually put it, but there are 2 different initials on a couple of the blades though

This turbo is not a FP "green"

If anything, its a "red"

Just FYI.

...Thats what I thought when I saw the pics up top. From the looks of it in the pictures, its definetly not a 50 trim. OMG

This might be a tad off topic, but how much is too much shaft play, in and out and side to side?

On a healthy turbo the shaft should not move in and out at all. A tiny bit of side to side play is normal.

well damn, is it a red then? Crap, did I get shafted?

Well if the amount you paid for it was based on a Green, I'd say you came out on top if it is in fact a Red :D

Just outta curiosity if the side to side movement you can bang the blades on the compressor housing, and the in and out is about and 1/8 of an inch :| how bad is that???

I don't know too much about turbos, but that doesn't seem to good.

I traded it for my used greddy 18g and PR o2 Dump.

If you can bang the blades on the compressor housing then the turbo definetly has too much play. I would have it checked out before using it on your car. :dsm:

If the blades touch the comp housing, no good. If there in and out movement, no good. I would say it needs a rebuild, can the greens/red be rebult? The red is a more expensive turbo then the green & is able to make more hp but it may be too much turbo if you dont have the supporting mods. ie you wont get the full benefit out of the turbo & you will have alot of lag, since even with the proper mods it is still a laggy turbo since it is more geared to drag raceing.

Will I be fine with this?

Rebuilt 6 bolt Swap/ Fresh head

Custom 2.5 o2 housing, Tial 38mm wastegate, Greddy Intake, K&N Filter, MBC, Ported 2G Manifold, Megan Racing Downpipe, HKS Hiper Exhaust, DSMLINK, 660cc fic injectors, Walbro 255, Magnecore Wires, Greddy 24R intercooler, Greddy BOV, ACT 2600, Fidanza Flywheel

Looks like you've got all the main areas covered, maybe add some cams to get the full potential, you might need to eventually upgrade those injectors as well. As far as spool goes from what Ive seen it looks like a properly tuned red with the proper supporting mods makes about 15 psi around 4100 rpms & 18 psi around 4450 rpms. This is only what I have read so if someone who actually has this turbo wants to correct me or verify? But defently get the turbo checked out it sounds like it has too much shaft play.

This just sucks because this turbo is not the one i wanted even if it is worth more money.

I checked it out and thought the shaft play was fine. minor side to side and no in and out. Anyway, I'm gonna head out to AMS to see what they say about it.

Oh, I was looking at the posts without reading who they were from. I thought it was you that posted the fins contacted the comp housing and their was about 1/8" in/out but that was someone else. You should be fine, but always a good idea to get it checked out to be sure.
