been fabbing for a while but never made a collector before so i figured why not give it a shot.

disclaimer - didn't have a gas lense and forgot to back purge :)

For no back gas and no lense i say you did a great job even if you did have them! The oly thing i see is that the 4 tubes in the collector are facing away from each other at a pretty arge angle but build the header to suit and it won't be an issue. great job!

I like it. Pics of the inside of the welds? Will this even hold up without back purging though? Turbos are not light.

Looks good. Fabrication is much more difficult than people realize, so props to you.

When you do the second one, consider the merge angle. I suspect a lower number would increase efficiency. (And of course make it impossible to get the torch in there LOL

purging is to keep the weld from oxidizing on the root. By his weld width and joint positions I can tell he didn't penetrate.
Unless he had gaps...

I build aircraft tubing. I've seen oxidated welds on .035 tubing hold 5,000 psi hydro.

So you saying he should do another pass for full penetration?
Does back purging help penetrate?
Do you get better looking welds when back purging?

If you look at the inside he welded the root and possibly got full penetration that way. If he was welding 1 pass with full pen, yes the gas would help puddle flow and cosmetics. The oxidation can flow from the root to the face. Causing a dirty looking weld. His foot(amps) will help him penetrate.

oh it penetrated all right, no doubt about that but just to be sure i welded it inside and out so it will be fine for sure.

i weld 1/4 ss at work almost everyday that has to be water tight and hold 400 gallons of water weight and pressure.

gas lense and back gassing would have just made it a lot better looking but i highly doubt it would have made it any stronger...

Turbos are not light.

well i dont know why anyone would build a long large manifold and not support the turbo. thats just asking for cracks.

Whats the downside of that exactly?

If you really lay into it with the amperage without back purging you can get this raised oxidation or "sugaring" as someone else called it.

I don't back purge, and as long as you aren't welding too hot, you rarely see any "sugaring".

And as far back purging making a stronger weld.. I've been running my manifold for almost a year on my dd with a heavy ass Holset and the weight of the downpipe and front half of the exhaust system WITHOUT any bracing, and yet to see any type of crack or failure. :D

Hmm I never really tried much SS because I thought you had to backpurge. I'll give it a shot now.

Gamble, when doing stainless exhaust tubing, I get a slight bit of sugaring because my tig will only go down to 30amps, but if I move fast there is hardly any sugaring. You should be fine with a nicer welder.

Also, I've not had any breakage problems with any of my welds, even if sugared bad.

Looking good man, yea backpurging makes a better weld, i weld 3/8" stainless pipe at work sometimes and the welds come out just fine, just takes alot of practice.
