Mounts are not lining up...

I can't get any of my Engine mounts to line up and go on....
Trying for 3 hours.

At first it was because the wrong mounts were on. *Auto block with manual trans*
I just swapped them out, and nothing is going right :(.

Is there a certain order to do this to make it easy.

I've been trying Back first, front 2nd trans 3rd and L 4th. But I can't even get the 1st rear mount to line up at all.... Am I doing a wrong order or something?
 
What mounts do you have, if they are those polyurethane ones check to see if the hole in the mount is right in the middle, when some people put them on they don't realize it, try to see how much it doesn't line up and take them out and move it
 
I personally line up the rear first. Next Put the bolt through the passenger side mount while it is still removed from the tranny. Then I take a floor jack and jack it up into place and bolt it to the tranny. Next is the driver side mount using a floor jack on the oil pan (with a couple peices of 3" styrafom) to get it to line up. Then I bolt up the crossmemeber to the car and put the bolt in the front and final mount. Of course this is all on a 2g so I don't know how it will all work on a 1g since I have never wrenched on one.
 
What I've had luck with in the past (using an engine hoist would be ideal) is removing the cross member to begin with (it's only 5 bolts, not including the one running through the front mount). With that out the way, do the rear mount first, then the transmission mount. Again, in the past, I've put the bolt through the front mount and bolted up the cross member (use a jack if necessary). Take a break and plan a couple different ways to approach the driver side. It is a major PITA, requiring a lot of swearing, shoving, beating, and luck.

You might consider trying to get the driver side mount on before the front mount, like Jmonet1620 suggests. It's possible having that extra range of motion will make the driver side easier (it certainly helps with removing/installing the lower timing cover). On the other hand, it could definitely make it more difficult with that silly "L" mount on the 1Gs.

Other tips, use breaker bars or something similar for leverage and screwdrivers as guides for the bolts/holes. It isn't a fun job to do, I'll definitely say that.
 
Ever looked closely at the sleeve in the front motor mount on all poly mounts? It's a good size bigger than the factory bolt. The reason for that is so you can have wiggle room when installing the other mounts, so leave the front one for last, get the other 3 in and then go to the front.

I had problems doing this on both 1g and 2g (done them on quite a few) finally called prothane and they told me that the sleeve is bigger to allow you to get the front bolt in last easier. I thought the sleeve was the wrong size, but it's supposed to be like that.
 
Man..... After getting a hoist, removing the cross member, and cussing at my dog. I finally got them all in.
I did rear first, Front, Trans, Then the L. Seemed to all come together easy after the rear was in.

Huh, i figured out prothane effed up the bolt size on the front mount. I ended up getting one of the right diameter made for me, just for thoroughness.

When it comes to mounts i have usually had luck getting the front and rear lined up first (sometimes i apply a bit of grease to help them slide in better). For the transmission mount (which was a pain when i had ABS) i left the whole mount assembled, including the frame side of the mount. Then with the mount in approximately the right place I go into the passengers wheel well and simply bolt it in- the bolts here are tapered so they will essentially align themselves if they can grab any thread at all. torque to spec and done. Turns this usually frustrating job into an easy job. The drivers top mount is also made easier with a little grease.

It always helps to have another pair of eyes and hands to help with this too, for safety and moving your expensive hoses and wires out of the way. Best of luck!
