I have a 90 tsi awd and noticed that I have an oil leak. Looks like the oil pan is missing two bolts and my first thought was that the guy I bought the car from just tighten them to tight breaking the bolt off inside the block. Closer inspections and im not sure if the holes are even lining up with these two bolts. I didnt see any broken bolt in the hole nor does a new bolt go in and tighten. Its a 6 bolt im sure but is it possible that a 7 bolt oil pan got put on. Do the 6bolt and 7 bolt oil pans have same number of bolts and in same position?

The pans are not interchangeable between 6 and 7 bolts, someone likely just bent the rail of the pan. Make sure when you fix the leak, DO NOT use a gasket. Only a bead of grey rtv with the pan torqued immediately after applying the rtv.

Thanks. I read everywhere that they are not interchangeable. I just went outside to double check myself that the pan is in fact a 6 bolt. Guess my next move will be pulling it off the find the issue. I seen he had red rtv around the pan. Its just weird that the bolt holes are not lining up unless im not applying enough force to tighten the new bolts

Been a little while since ive had to drop oil pan. Correct me if im wrong but you have to drop the xcase and the downpipe to get the oil pan off right?

Yes, the t-case drops with 5 bolts and the down pipe with 2.
You shouldn't have to force anything to line up as far as the oil pan bolts go. They strip with little force applied so be careful not to do so. Is the surface flat on the pan?

Picture reference of 1g oil pan showing all the bolt holes:

Check if there is any silcone closing the holes. Are the two holes next to each other? I had no leak on mine where i was missing 3 bolts and no leaks, but they weren't next to each other. Also check if the other bolts were tight enough. Check for oil pan crack. Had a situation where there was a little crack between the bolts and became a big deal when theres oil pressure (car is running). Check these out before you take it out. Please Don't force bolts in, you don't want to break them in the block and end up with another headache. One of safetiest way, pull it out get a new oil pan gasket and bolts if possible and do it without forcement and inspect for any cracks
Hope this helps and best of luck

Well def not a hole in either one. Must be broken off flush and noticed my xcase is missing a bolt on the case itself. Awesome. Looks like tap and die for me tomorrow
