Does the metal bracket the power transistor bolts to have to be grounded or can i remove the transistor from the metal bracket and mount elsewhere without the transistor sitting on metal?

Although there is a ground wire, the metal bracket needs to be there and bolted to the engine. This is because the metal bracket, which is also ground, is a much better conductor of the high ground current (from the coil through the PT to ground) than the wire. Even more important than that, the bracket sinks the transistor heat away which is crucial.

did you bolt the transistor to the coil bracket, or the transistor bracket to the coil bracket.
Don't forget what rally said about the heat issue. The bracket is very important. And make sure if you ever pull the transistor off the bracket that you put new heat sync grease on it before you put it back on

I bolted the transistor bracket to the coil bracket. Yeah artic silver 5 is good stuff never thought of using it for this.
