I have 1999 misubishi eclipse gs 2.4 litre that is sitting in the shop. While I was driving the engine would start sputtering making my car kind of hop in every gear and sometimes would stall while I would be sitting at red lights or waiting to make turns. My mechanic says the code came back saying it was the mass airflow sensor or meter. My first question is are the sensor and meter the same thing? Ive done some research and know that some times using mass airflow sensor cleaner to clean the sensor solves this issue if thats all that is wrong. My mechanic says it'll cost about $400 for a new one and about $30 for labour. I live in Canada so is $400 the average price for a mass airflow sensor for a 99 eclipse?.I think I could find one cheaper if I looked around or online. Anyways I went out and bought mass airflow sensor cleaner and my plan is to go down to the shop tomorrow and clean the sensor myself to see if its just a matter of the sensor being dirty and clogged. I've only owned the car for a few months and the previous owner used it as a racecar. Im sure the air filter has never been replaced or cleaned in years so could this have cause the sensor to get dirty or clogged? Any comments would help I just wanna hear what people who know what their talking about have to say LOL. K thanks

I cleaned the sensor waited for it to dry then put it back in then had my check engine light reset. Drove around for about an hour everything seemed to work fine till engine started sputtering again. So I pulled into a parking lot and cleaned the sensor again thinking maybe it would fix the problem but it didnt. The engine stalls when im sitting in neutral and at times it wouldnt even stay running it would start up but stall right away. So I gave the air filter and sensor a shake thinking maybe theres a loose connection somewhere and it worked. So when I move the sensor in some spots the engine stalls out and in other spots it seems to idle fine and it actually ran good enough for me to get home. If there is a loose connection somewhere around the mass airflow sensor is this why im having these stalling and acceleration problems? Could that also cause my check engine light to come back on? If a sensor does need to be replaced does it still work at times and then at other times cause your engine to stall out like this? Or once a sensor is damaged or whatever does it even work at all? If anyone could answer these questions for me I'd appreciate it k thanks

To be honest you can just go to like a auto zone order the item and if doesn't work(or change the problem ) just return the MAF sensor. It can be found for 229 at :Mass Air Flow Sensor | 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 Cylinders G 2.4L MFI SOHC | AutoZone.com

Its really an easy swap out and only has like 4 screws, I wouldn't pay a mechanic to change it out.

Anyway, I had the same problems as you a while back the cel light was throwing all codes related to the MAF sensor and Map sensor. After I ruled out that sensor was not the problem I proceeded to replace the map sensor and then the check engine light disappeared.

However, still could not drive the car with the MAF sensor plugged in (car started and ran ok without it). Finally after fussing with it for quite some time, I took it to the stearlership and they told me my fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator (forget which one) was stuck on the low setting or something. Swapped and changed it out and now everything works fine.

Don't pay to have a mat put on, it's right in the air intake, super easy to get to. The prices you've stated sound like stealership prices honestly, if your car wasn't at a Mitsu dealership getting that price quote I'd say your mechanic was just trying to drain your wallet.

I would replace the MAF sensor with a good used one myself first, then go from there. It can't hurt, and it'll save a lot of money doing it yourself. If you still have problems, take it back to him and tell him to properly diagnose it.

BTW, those "MAF cleaners" are basically a joke.

i would buy a used maf for cheap..people go speed density all the time so they no longer need theirs. those cleaners are ridiculous.

I am looking for my MAF sensor, and cannot find it! I have a 1999 2.0 GS (non-turbo). Having similar symptoms as above. I took apart the air cleaner housing, and the air duct leading to the throttle body intake. And I cannot at all find a MAF sensor. In fact, I don't see anything at all that even resembles the various pictures I've seen of what one is supposed to look like. I'm assuming there should be one, right?

if you dont see a giant black tube with wires running into it, then you probably have speed density. did you buy the car already modded?

I stopped reading after the first sentence so I'm sorry if I missed anything but the N/T platforms don't have a MAS.
