Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

Yeah you are correct in saying that. I was able to mount my greddy on a 1g bov flange. It would not be possible to put a 1g bov on a greddy flange.

Are you sure it can't be done? i originally thought that but I did some searching on here and found a post where a few people including a wiseman said it could be done, but would just need to drill new holes for the 1g bov. If thats not correct than I will just have to cut it off and weld on a new flange. Anyone know off the top of your head where they have a cheap 1g bov flange for sale?

You can mount a Greddy BOV on a 1G flange by drilling 2 holes. You cannot mount a 1G BOV on a Greddy flange, the Greddy flange is not wide enough to allow 2 holes to be drilled to mount the 1G BOV.

You can buy 1G and Greddy flanges here - http://www.roadraceengineering.com/flangesandgaskets.htm

FYI - The SSAC kit comes flanged for the 1G bov, not the Greddy bov.

OK well the one that seems to be the same as the SSAC kit, the guy selling it said it came flanged for a greddy bov. I will hope that it is indeed the same intercooler, and the guy was just incorrect in which flange it is. Can't be too bad though if I need to cut and weld a new flange on .
This does appear to be the same intercooler as the SSAC one correct?
Thanks a lot for that link also. I appreciate it.

Heres the link:

OK well decided to actually look carefully at the picture this time, and if I'm getting what is pictured it looks like that is a 1g bov flange correct? The guy did say it was for a greddy but most people selling these parts on ebay don't know anything about the product they sell.

Correct. That is a 1G BOV flange in the picture.

I have my ssac drilled for a greddy bov. You can't put a 1g bov on a greddy flange becuase the 1g bov is " long " for the greddy flange.

I just got all my 50 trim/ssac/o2dump things installed. Now waiting to figure out why the o2 sensor won't cycle at idle. bah

Dsmlink says my coolant temps are hitting 220's, yea I shut the car off immediately, don't know what that is about.

Where are you guys getting your vacuum source? did you have a nipple welded into the intercooler pipe?

if you're hitting high coolant temps, try a 30/70 mix and a new thermostat. If that doesn't help, you will have to look into creating new ducting.

As for vac sources, I always use the intake manifold and the compressor housing of the turbo. No need to tap anywhere on the LICP for me.

Ok well here is the ssac and I got it for a total price including shipping for 330. Not quite as good as they used to be when ssac was selling this one but I guess they are sold out. Someone else is selling it on ebay and here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-99-Eclipse-Talon-Laser-Bolt-On-Intercooler-Piping-FM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ013QQitemZ230148726215QQrdZ1

Should have it installed on my car whenever I get the endless problems with it fixed. I will put some pics up of it since it seems a bunch of people don't think it is the same thing.

I'm getting the same kit from the same manufacturer, but mine will include the extra missing coupler along with the two missing t-bolt clamps. The couplers will also be black. I'm also going to offer the option of resurfacing the throttle body flange by a professional machine shop at my cost, which is about $25. We all know that the throttle body flanges on these units are usually warped, this way it brings the kit one step closer to a true bolt on.

Well guys, I've had the OBX fmic kit on now for a couple weeks and just wanted to report back that its been holding 20 psi on my e316g just fine.

Im quite pleased with this kit, everything needed to install this was included, t-bolts, couplers, etc. The welds on my core were good, cant vouche for every single core they make but mine was just fine.

i just got my 31x12x3 intercooler yesterday with universal pipes (2,90s 2,45s 2,70s and a bunch of 4ply coupplers and t-bolts) and it all looks good, pressuretested the intercooler at about 35psi not like i plan on runing that high. but it held which is a good sign. i didnt get a new t/b elbow when i bought my stuff, should i just try to work around it or should i get a new elbow. also should i buy a new outlet for the 14b?

The ssac fmic guys. If your looking at the tb how are you getting a wrench in there to tighten the ic pipe on in the bottom right corner. The bend is really sharp and is not allowing me to tighten it at all.

I had to purchase a smaller wrench that's slightly angled differently. It was a pain in the ass but I got it workin.

Yeah I had to get a small wrench and grind the sides of it thin to allow more room to spin.
Nice rhyme, nice rhyme...:p

My thread is still going!!!:thumb:

yiippiee? LOL

I'm going to be doing a boost leak test tommorow. Hopefully I dont have any leaks. I took both the tb flange and bov flange and laid them against a table mounted belt sander. We will see. Hopefully I got that bolt tighten down just right. I had to take of my feed line to be able to turn my wrench.

This thread is massive... So, I'll go the newbie route and just ask. Where can I find the best FMIC for a 93 GSX for it's price that INCLUDES the full I/C piping. I've been looking on e-Bay but can only find the core or the piping kit, neither together. Never really done any intercooler work before, as mine have always been the stock SMIC. Any links, info would be appreciated.:sneaky:

well i too bought an ebay intercooler and its holding pretty well for me...but i did something different i didnt use the aluminum brackets that came with it...i stepped up to som think steel pieces and just bent them to fit and let me tell u that thing is sturdy! also i chose an IC that had both inlet and outlets on the same side (pointing towards the passenger side of the car) i think the pic is on my gallery...to me it made installing the ic pipes much easier...still lost my fog lights but all the fitting that might need fixing are right there near the front of the bumper so no jacking up the car or anything...just my .02 on this LOL

I got my SSAC FMIC today!!!! :D Came directly from SSAC (after waiting for 3 months) with no problems. Took off my old FMIC tonight and getting everything ready to mount it. I can't wait until I eliminate my giant boost leak (aka my bov) and can vent properly! :thumb:
