Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

I run this kit with the t-25 and notice maybe a few hundred rpm lag but not much. Wish I could measure the intake temps, but to the touch its alot cooler compaired to the stock side mount. Takes some time to install but worth every second. Have a dremmel or some way to trim your bumper because you need to trim alot. You'll love it, I do.

Has anyone tried the OBX/Apex'i FMIC clone? they go about $300 shipped on ebay.

It has the crappy maze like piping thats a signature of the apex'i kit (of course its a clone) and the greddy kits, but it's another option for those who don't want to deal with simple fabrication of the much superior SSAC kit. And maintain their foglights and front bumper supports, and keep their ic piping that routes to smic location.

Thinking of maybe getting it down the rode for my beater and/or my uncles car.

Is any of you guys having problems with overheating using this fmic, I just got done installing mine and when i go over like 65/70mph temp goes up to like 230 degrees in my palm!.

THANKS.

When you put a large FMIC in front of the radiator and remove the air ducting around the radiator you reduce the air flow through the radiator and the radiator doesn't cool the engine as well as it used to. I made sheet aluminum ducts to direct the air through the radiator that was going around it and under it. I also use DSMLink to turn on the fans when the engine gets too hot. Getting air flowing through the radiator again is the solution to over heating problems. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showpost.php?p=50449602&postcount=192

Hahn racecraft added a newer smaller intercooler to there offerings. It is similar in size to the intercooler that started this thread with both intake and exhaust ports on the same size but unlike the that intercooler the end tank is not square. It has a nice smooth even radius turn to it. Might be a great intercooler for someone like me that is running a Big T28! Price looks to be in the $600s. After I put on the Big T28 and the SRP SS tubular exhaust manifold running at 17psi I noticed a lot of heatsoak with the stock smic. And I have been having problems with detonation now that it is hot out! Detonation wasn't an issue earlier in the year when it was cold out. I can't quite se the need to put a huge fmic on it with the relatively small turbo and boost levels.

hey toojung2die, nice fabricating! Looks good! I might be doing something like that in the future. My car runs really hot. I hardwired a dash switch to control my fans, eliminated the a/c and sooner or later would like to put in a fluidyne radiator. i have used the water wetter products before but we have had some problems with it. First off it can produce alot of oxidation inside the head which can cause alot of problems. Secondly if you live in a cold northern climate it raises the freezing temp of your coolant. I had mine checked at the begining of the winter and it was sitting at 17 degrees. Not 17 degrees below zero but 17 degrees.

I just ordered one yesterday, when it comes in ill take some pics of the install and let you know how it turns out.

For 310$ shipped thats hard to beat, and its still definately an upgrade to the stock smic. Besides I emailed SSAC about the DSMTuner price of about 320 shipped and they would not honor that, best they would do is 650 so for that price i would have opted for a different kit all together.

Thanks. The shrouds lowered coolant temps ~10 degrees while cruising which is when I got the highest temps. The ECU turns off the fans once the car is going faster than 45 mph so if the airflow created by the car moving doesn't get to the radiator it does no good. I have the stock radiator and ambient temperatures here in the Mojave Desert often get up to 115 degrees or more and much higher than that on the heat soaked highways. Just turning on the fans gets my coolant temps back down to normal nice and quick. I use 1:4 anti-freeze/distilled water with three quarters of a bottle of water wetter added. No problems.:thumb:

Sucks that ssautochrome isn't honoring the group buy anymore, let us know how that obx fmic works out as its getting hot and I'm looking to upgrade to a fmic.

I've noticed you guys buy a lot of stuff from CXracing. Well i'm not sure if any of you have seen the 1g FMIC kits i sell, but they are made by CXracing and i'm trying to put together a 2g kit. If anyone that has an IC from cxracing and has made up piping is willing to help me out i'll hook ya up with some cash or a free IC kit.

Basically i need someone to make me a complete piping kit for one of the IC's ship it to me so i can start production. If anyone is interested let me know my email is [email protected]

I run the OBX. I love it! you can't beat the price and it works great! I reworked the pipes a bit and made it short route, I used about 95% of the pipe that came with the kit. A couple cuts and a couple welds and it was done.

I got mine from newdsmman on dsmtalk. it was $325.00 shipped to the door. These kits are great and worth every cent. I have not had any trouble at all with overheating. Be sure to blow out your rad. & A/C rad. good before you install the FMIC.

My Talon is automatic so I had to move the trans cooler & A/T dipstick & tube.
