......from what I can see, thats a pretty smooth run. Your 1-2 shift looks very quick....do you powershift the 1-2 Leon? Also, I am interested in your suspension set-up...I have the good old Eibach pro with AGX.....the car is so light it sits as high or higher than stock and I still get a good amount of nose dive on my 1-2 shift, although I do not power shift the 1-2...maybe I should...hehe...

>from what I can see, thats a pretty smooth run.

Thanks! I knew it had to be a pretty smooth run based on et and trap speed, but I was still surprised at just how nice it looked!

>Your 1-2 shift looks very quick....do you powershift the 1-2 Leon?

I do not like to use term “powershift”, because it means different things to different people :). I am assuming that you are talking about not lifting. Right?

Unfortunately, I just can’t bring myself to not lift during 1-2 shift. I can post my log when I get home tonight, where you will see me lifting :(. But the rest of shifts are with out lifting.

>Also, I am interested in your suspension set-up...I have the good old Eibach pro with AGX.....

Well, my suspension is far from optimal drag racing set up. It is VERY stiff (350lbs rear/450 lbs front) with equally stiff Shocktek/Builstein dampers. It is the best you could get around 3-4 years ago. Unfortunately, one of my rear shocks and one of my front struts are blown… And offer little (if any) damping. I am going to have to figure out something really quick. I am also running a lot of negative camber and toe-out alignment! Neither is good for straight line performance.

You can also hear enormous amount of wheel spin during my launch. So I was not hooking up well at all :(. Given that his was a humid 75 deg day, with lot of VHT, my 60’ should have been much better than 1.68 that I got on that run.

Anyway, I would not recommend this type of suspension for drag racing.

>car is so light it sits as high or higher than stock and I still get a good amount
>of nose dive on my 1-2 shift,

You might want to switch over to the coilovers, but AGXs should still work fine.

>although I do not power shift the 1-2...maybe I should...hehe...

Sure, we all should! That is the most important gearshift to skip the lifting on! But it is also the most difficult one to accomplish :). However, out of all the turbos out there, 14b is probably the least hurt by lifting. But there is something to be said about fast shifts in general, which can help any turbo, and not lifting requires you to shift faster, so maybe it will help even this little turbo :).

Phil,
Hey its Travis from Jessup, those are some aweome times! Man that sux that you moved back up north, sorry things at Extreme didn't work out, As a matter of fact, i took my extra 14B to work yesterday and started porting it, and i found a crack that went on the side of the wastegate flapper to the other side. I was planing on bringing it up to extreme tomorow to ask you if you thought it was salvagable, but i guess i'll have to get one of the other guys to look at it. I started to work on this extra turbo hoping to port it out pretty good and put in my buddies 34mm flaper that he just got since my car just got finished. My car is now running after being dead for 18 months so i wanna build up this 14B. Great time to you and Leon, thanks for the inspiration on the 14B, and good luck in CT. Take car man and thanks for all of the help.
Travis
Someday i wish to run low 12's on a 14B, i'll let you know when it happens!

Chris--I'll get some pics up there soon, I've got to dig them up from my move back here to Connecticut...I've got stuff spread out, but, I do have some recent shots.....actually one of them is the one in SCC magazine.

Travis.......yeah man...it just wasn't cuttin it down there at Extreme. I truly was miserable. Although, I met alot of cool people like yourself, and when we went out and did things, I had alot of fun, like the dyno day at Altered...that was cool. Good luck with your ride and I'm always around the computer now....so, email me anytime, this goes for anyone up here wanting to contact me first hand....at [email protected].

Take care and keep in touch. I'll let you know any updates on the Talon...

Phil1320

ps--Trav....definitely miss SOME people down there!

sweet times on the 14b. you guys are baffling me.

i have a 16g and on 93 octane at 18psi i can only run a 14.9 at 92mph.

i have a walbro 255 and stock 450s.

no afc.

nice times again :)

Im very impressed with all of your times.

However,

You guys are comparing apples to oranges.

Every Track is different, some are faster, some are slower, some of more sticky, some are uphill, downhill....you get the picture. Temperature and humidity plays a pretty large role as well. Elevation, conditions....you get the picture.

Unless you guys run at the SAME track on the SAME day. You will never know who's car is actually "faster" given your times are so close.

Peace

>Unless you guys run at the SAME track on the SAME day. You will
>never know who's car is actually "faster" given your times are so close.

 You are forgetting something! It has to be in the SAME lane (because even two lanes at the same track are not the same) and with-in 2 min of each run (to discount variable weather conditions)!

I really hope that you are kidding...

Leon
RR

I was just messing with you guys because you we in a small arguemnt....just playing..

But on that same tip, dont forget to switch drivers as well because a car is only as fast as the driver...haaahahah

this is really great stuff :)

Little ol 14b out running 11's GOOD GOD!

Are your(both of you and anyone else really fast with a 14b) turbos really 14b's or are they just 14b housings with bigger wheels etc?

I don't ask this with any disrespect, just curiosity. Mine is the way it came on the car back in 91, and I want to know what I can do to it and still call it a 14b.

Once I get a 13.3 or better on the DEAD stock one that is :)

With all that talk of breaking 14b records, I had to get back in. So I went out tonight for some tuning before the big race tomorrow. My night started out pretty bad. First, my computer was not working and I had to borrow friend’s computer. Then my cable ended up bad… Fortunately I was able to borrow another friend’s cable for just one run, which didn’t tell me much… so much for tuning :(.

My first 3 runs were between 11.97-12.01 all in the 110-112mph range. I was not happy… I just could not keep boost, which would drop below 15psi by 6k rpms or so and I felt the lost power.

On the last run I made the following changes:

- advanced timing “a little bit”
- reduced boost to around 20psi
- leaned thing out with the SAFC

Unfortunately, this was later in the evening (9:25pm), so traction started to go away. That yielded the worse 60’ time of the night (1.646 sec). But I was still able to run 11.754 @ 115.02 ! Which, I believe re-sets the record once again.

However, I bet that this record will be re-set two more times this weekend :). I bet that it will be nearly impossible to keep track of 14b records in the next few months. And I will predict that 10’s are not out of the question for a sufficiently lightened car…

Your move guys! :thumb: :)

Leon
RR

........you make it sound so easy. 11.75....115 mph is great. So, your 1/8 mile must be 7.49 or so. Never thought those FWD guys would run so quick. Definitely amazing. I wish my worst 60' was 1.64..... :thumbdown I have only hit 1.6's about 5 times total with 1.65 as my best, but, I do launch somewhat on the soft side along with my 1-2 shift. I guess I need to be a little more aggresive. Anyway, nice job!

Phil1320

ps-If Nate lightens his car 200-250lbs. he should be good for low, low elevens, if not a 10 second pass.

Congrats Leon! That is trully some great stuff.

Well, Leon I knew you could not hold out for much longer. Especially when you know you have a car that has potential. Much like me driving 9 hours round trip to a 1/4 just to get one somewhat decent run.

So of the AWD T/E/L's out there what does the current top 5 or 10 order look like?

#1 11.754 @ 115.02 Leon
#2 12.009 @ 113.32 Phil B.
#3 12.102 @ 112.58 Adam G.

was Doug Derby running an AWD when he ran 12.13 ?
And what about the late Jeff Carpenter was he running an AWD when he ran 12.27 ?

Then my sub par performance that still netted a 12.178 @ 111.94 is in the mix. Phil I know you are the really good with all the numbers and times.

Thanks EVERYONE!!! But...

I had another outing today, the local Import Wars. I ran 11.642 at 116.56. And somehow (luck!) managed to beat a 10 sec Supra to win the event!

Anyway, here at the stats:

- Car weight 2754 with me in it, 2556 without.
- No cat back, but DP is in place
- BFG G-force drag tires

As you see, Green Machine has been on a diet :)

good stuff....gutting cars rules! 11.64@116. I doubt I will ever come close to that type of ET without removing balance shafts and bumping compression. I think running an FMIC would actually help also considering all the guys including the FWD cars are using them. That is a great run and beating Supras....that's the best. So, good job, you have alot of event wins under your belt. I have never really competed in alot, just one import survival, the '98 shootout, and some little stuff at the home track LVD, NY. As of my last race, my car was 2575lbs, and race weight was 2760, so you are now 6lbs. lighter with more power. Should be about 2690lbs. total race weight this time out. I will run May 21 and that will dictate wether I run the 14b on the Talon ever again. If I do not crack 11 seconds, that will be the last time on the stocker and I will sit on the list at 12.00. I just can't bring myself to build a motor around the 14b, especially when I still only have 79k original miles, but, I will pull the motor and remove the balance shafts. I removed the broken studs from the head so hopefully I will have a good seal at the exhaust manifold to head. Hopefully boost will hold better, but after reading all the 14b guys' posts up here, it seems the actuators might not be able to handle higher boost all the time, or the turbos are just getting weaker. Also, I have the FP Green just sitting in the basement and after running the 14b for 7.5 years now, the turbo has never been out of the car, oil/water, never disconnected, it's time to make the car alot faster....we got alot of Z06 and Cobra Mustang owners around here, in the 1/4 they are not a problem at this point, but, I'd like to have more top-end power.

Anyway, Leon, can you post the two runs up here? 11.75-11.64. One other question cuz I get mixed answers--do you run a lightweight flywheel?

Travis, I never really messed with that screw in the 1g maf, I had it out, but put it back in where it came from the factory and left it alone. Remember, I run the 2G maf with Safc2, 550cc's, and 2.25" modded stock I/C and Dejon and Buschur piping. I am actually heading out to work on the car in a few. Just installed the Odyssey battery, I scooped the hood, I'm gonna bolt everything together and dyno in one week. Hopefully, 290HP is possible, remember, I dynoed 285 on the Dynapacks--that should produce a higher number on a Dynojet, but I'm done dynoing on the Jets.....the Packs are sweet.

We will see what happens. Later.

Phil1320

Nice good luck with the dyno #'s. I'm getting bored sometimes of the lack of topend power too watching my dsm friends pull on the highway with thier upgraded turbos. Drag racing is fun though but i'm hoping by this fall i can have something else to install. Anyone know anything about the anual meet this fall in Ohio? Thanks guys
12.42 on C16 ~ 12.64 on 93octane @18psi

Thanks Phil,

>Leon, can you post the two runs up here?

You mean 60’ times? The 60’ time on 11.6 runs is messed up. It showed 2.062, which is clearly wrong. A couple of other people also had messed-up 60’ times from that lane as well. Judging by the rest of my 60’ times that day, it should have been in the 1.58-1.62 sec range.

>One other question cuz I get mixed answers--do you run a >lightweight flywheel?

I have been running a Fidenza FW for almost two years now. I am not a big fan of light FW’s, but I have been using it for safely reasons.

Next time I have my engine out, I am going to install a heavier ACT FW.

Leon
RR

...I was actually interested in your 1/8 miles ET/speed but the 60' info is cool to.....Fidanza, yeah really light, I was considering the ACT myself....just wondering how hard it will be to get used to....launching and such. ?

Trav---thanks man...we'll see....I actually just picked up the cleanest '90 Laser FWD turbo I have ever seen, 114k original, and bone stock owned by an older gentleman. Basically, everything that's on the Talon will be swapped to the Laser when I go to the Green. Should be a fun streetbeater, I missed my old Laser so much I had to have another one, so I searched and searched until I found a sweet one, champagne color with the factory mesh wheels, not a mark on the thing. I'm psyched.

Leon, Thats moving. I read on one of your post one time that you speculated you could get the 14b to the 11.5 range and you have neraly done that. You have got me really motivated to get back out to the 1/4 to blast some 11's out of the car. I know it has them as it is right now, but I want to be their for sure. So I am trying to put my girl on a diet also.

what kind of fuel management are you guys running

are most of you running a GM MAS with the MAF-T, or s-afc, or stock everything.

i am looking to break into the 12's with my 14b car(94 Talon AWD with cyclone motor)

I am running 2gen pistons, balance shafts removed, 2.5" exhaust turbo back, 255 walbro fuel, arp head studs

i also have a s-afc if needed for fuel

thanks
