When I was replacing my oil pan gasket today and searching for other leaks, my friend noticed the knock sensor had a small amount of oil coming out of it. Not from the threads, not dripping onto it, but actually leaking out where the wire comes out... Is that possible? What idiot designed the thing to screw into an oil passage?

How much $$$$ am I looking at for a new one?

That is not oil.

That "goo" is what protects the sensor. They don't screw into an oil passage. How much of the goo is gone? You may need a new one.

You need a new one. Even when a little of the oil comes out they become bad. Just go out and get yourself a new one.

Awsome, so I'm driving around in a car with no knock control? Or is it more likely that its just seeing tons of knock and that explains my no power all torque dyno numbers? I just need to know if I gotta go easy on the car because it won't see knock or if timing is way retarded and I don't need to worry about it until I can replace it.

Kinda hard (i.e. impossible) to say with my car not on the lift. I wasn't paying attention to how much was out (i didn't know what it was) but just the fact that it was there. I'd say comparing the size of the sensor to what fluid was dripping from it, 1/2 to most of it was gone. And that's just what was on it, never mind what already dripped off onto the ground.

I would replace it as soon as possible. It is probably making your car run like shit. They are about $70 from the dealer around here and keep in mind that is for a 1g. Dont know if there is that much of a price diff.

Sweet, $70 sounds cheap enough to me.

I should be able to reach it with just the dp off right?

Now the question is. I have a 6 bolt, so will I be using a 1G or 2G sensor? And will it require any modifictions to fit the harness or block?
