Is it true a 1g gsx motor is stronger then a 2g gsx?

Im thinking about buying a 1993 mitsubishi eclipse gsx auto and was wondering if the motor would be stronger then a 97 gsx? i know the 1gs have 6bolt motor correct? so how much boost can it handle on stock? any known issues that u guys can tell me with a 93 gsx?

The 6 bolt was only stock in pre 92.5 cars. A 1993 would have a 7 bolt stock, albeit with the lower compression 7.8:1 pistons as opposed to the 95+ 8.5:1 pistons. The 6 bolt engine is able to withstand more power in stock form. The weak link in the 7 bolt is the skinnier connecting rod. The rod bolts will fail before the stock 6 bolt rods.

Before you use the year of car to determine the one you'll buy, make sure neither of them has had an engine swap.

whether you searched the forum or not this is what we are here for... info. Yes the pre 92.5 engines are defined by the number of bolts that connect the flywheel or flexplate to the back of the crank. the main 2 differences when discussing the "strength" differences between the two are the rods and the thrust main bearing on the crank. the rods in the 6 bolt motors are bigger than the 2nd gen and evo rods, therefor making them a little stronger. the only difference between the cranks in the 2nd gen and 1st gen are the bolt holes. what makes the 2nd gen prone to breaking down before the 1st gen is a design flaw in the block where the thrust bearing seats, allowing the crank to "walk" or move, which is more aggravated by high pressure, pressure plates.

There are a couple of other slight differences between the cranks..
The journals are slightly narrower on a 2g crank as well therefore bearings are not interchangable.

Another difference between 1g and 2g(not 7 or 6bolt) is the location of the oil squirters, which is the main culprit for the thrust bearing failing.

assuming there is no crankwalk on the 7 bolt 2g it should withstand around the same hp in stock fourm as the 1g 6bolt

1g 7-bolts are walk proof, and no a stock 1g 7-bolt can not take as much abuse as a stock 6-bolt because the of the weaker/lighter rods.

Yeah people tend to exaggerate the frequency of crank walk in our cars. Yes it is more likely do to the design flaws mentioned before, but any car can be a victim of this. If you look around the forums you will see that most people prefer the 6bolt block and they are proven to be somewhat stronger and vastly more resistant to crank walk. What I would worry about more is whether or not the previous owner maintained it well (if you aren't planning a rebuild right away).

one other thing people forget to add to the 6 bolt 7 bolt is that the 6 bolt istons(maybe all 1g's not sure) are weaker than the 2g pistons i hae blow ring land out of to 6 bolt motors and broke rod bolts once. but in a sense yes 6 bolt motors will take more abuse trust me i know.they have bigger rods and bigger crank journals if im not mistaken. actually all 1g's have bigger crank journals correct me if im wrong. but your 93 has a 7 bolt unless it has been swapped but the 1g 7 bolt is better than a 2g seven bolt.

also crankwalk is over rated cause every motor can walk. its just for the birds:notgood:

The wrist pins are also 1mm larger in the 7-bolt engines.

If you ask me, the 7-bolt 1G engines are the worst of both worlds. Skinny rods and none of the benefits of the 2G engine, like the higher compression and smaller intake ports. I love my 2G 7-bolt.

Also, I think it's fairly safe to say that the rod journal width difference is negligible.
