Is "Flow" the same for an air filter as an intercooler?

I meant the Air dams, they are different for sure. I've got the N/T "underbite" air dam.

But the dams will be the same with your custom one. This is assuming they got a fmic and ditched the sidemount.

I wanted to have the duct going straight to the sidemount so the air is forced through it and not around it, between the cracks on the sides and what not!
But i have a DL bumper so its slightly different from the turbo models! And using sheet metal to channel it would smooth the air flow (compared to stock plastic ruffled stuff) for better cooling. I would think!

FYI: i have a Talon DL (1.8L sohc) swapped!

But non the less.. i think the O.P. has a good thing going here!

All you need is a means to trap the air. See Corky Bell's Maximum Boost. The discussion on ducting to the intercooler is enough to think about. If the air cant go out and is encouraged to go in. It will go through the intercooler. Or air filter. Or radiator. Your choice .

Finished! It sure was a lot harder to put back together with the filter in there.

Ehhh... why would you weld an IAT sensor to the TB elbow?

You should thread it into a welded bung instead.

Nice ducting job. On my to-do list. I'd like to do some fiberglass or plastic ducting, but sheet metal will likely be easier. Just need to strip the galvanized coating off for painting.

This ducting system is wonderul...But I still have to ask, Whats wrong witht the stock plastic ducting that goes to the sidemount..I'm sure it would be a more PITA to mod the stock ducting to gett he new air filter in there..But I just wanted to know what's wrong with the stock ducting..

Thanks! The way I have it the filter is completely inside the air box, rather then just having the stock plastic blow the air on the filter. Think of it as a "bumper mounted cold air box".

No I really love the idea..Now I know why you made the whole box, instead of using the stock ducting..I had the stock ducting off once just to see how good the ducting is working..And I do have to say Duckting is alot better than no ducting at all..But I'm curious to see what kind of gain you get with this system..Post up when you take her for a ride..

I've been driving it almost everyday since I made this duct.

I can't express any felt improvements because I also switched to speed density at the same time and have been tuning v3 ever since so there have been lots of changes.

I don't have any data for say highway cruising IAT compared to ambient but I can get it if anyone is interested.

However I made 2 back to back third gear pulls yesterday, (both 24 psi falling to 15 on my 14b) the first was 2,200 - 6,300 RPMs and my IAT's only increased 6 degrees and the second was 2,100 - 6,700 and my IAT's increased 7 degrees. I know this mainly has to do with the intercooler but I'm sure the cooler air helps a little. I can't compare these numbers to before because I was't measuring or logging IATs. I can post the logs if anyone cares to see.

I considered enlarging the intercooler opening in the front bumper when I installed the FMIC but opted not to for the time being. Maybe one day...

Also making sure your stock piece is well cleaned to remove the 20 years worth of build up inside it.

91 eclipse, that's really nice looking and actually the next project on my car, i just moved my filter back to that area with new IC pipe build the other day and previousely having it there with no gaurd around it i suffered a bent rod from hydrolocking the engine. I"m just gonna plasma cut and then tig mine up, it probably won't look as nice nad have the fit yours does but i think anyone running their filter in this area needs some sort of get up like yours to feel "safe" or at least i do

Ya I cleaned the hell out of the piping and smic, when I got the car while doing maintenence..I don't really know If it helped tho..Cause soon after that I blew up my 13g and had to do it all over again..Then went with a larger setup..So its all been cleaned a couple of times..

Just wanted to chime in and say the ducting looks great. Ever toyed with the idea of ducting aroung the front mount to force air through the IC/Radiator?

Thanks! Yes, I've already played around with a similar idea and figured out how to do it. I have the sheet metal already too, just need to time. It will just be a single piece that will go under the IC to force the air that passes through the IC up into the radiator. It will be WAY easier then the CAI box I can tell you that much.
