I'm new to 1g and have read that I can get a chip burned or something along the lines of a reflash? Just a little confused about the terms and what each of the tuning options are. I ran a safc when I had the 2g but I've read that there are other options besides this the DSM Link. I have a gm maf and maft v2.02 sitting here and have heard that this version does a good enough job for a 550/650 range? I will be running the 255/afpr, 16g @ ~19lbs, and would like some options for tuning with a perspective injector size. Not looking to spend more than $400 on the tune + injectors....

Well i went 12.9 on a maft and 680s... That was 24 psi on a 16g with some race gas... The maf-t is alitle harder to tune with in my personal opinion.. If you have a eprom ecu in the 1g then the support for chips is much greater... the 1g ECU is publicly dismantled and you can find almost anything you want on it and alot of people can burn chips for you.. The chips will compensate for injectors, fuel cut issues, change your dash. It does alot of cool things..

1. seems a little slow on the 1/4

2. how is it hard to tune since you just set a couple knobs?

3. what is an eprom ecu? is that the stock ecu or something else modded to it? who burns chips? would they be able to burn one incorporating the gm maf?

4. chip can change my dash how?

Alittle slow on the quarter with a full weight 2g... LOL I ussually get the opposite response for the mods list it was done with...

anyways.... umm its probably going to be hard for you since you obviously have zero knowledge in tuning and no knowledge in searching... fullthrottlespeed.com is the site that makes the maft.. Look there...

An eprom ecu is a ecu that has a chip in it that can be removed and replaced with a custom burned chip.. Not all ecus have the eprom.. You must check to see if your has a chip which you can find how to identify it by using the search button..

It can make your stock boost gauge a knock guage or a volt meter or a bunch of stuff... It can make your check engine light a knock indicator by flashing when you hit a specific count of knock.. You can set launch controls and a bunch of other stuff with a chip as well..

1. Without tuning for the larger injectors, you'll be running very rich.

2. Don't adjust fuel trims without a logger to see what is being changed.

3. An eprom ecu is a regular ecu but has an eprom chip on it that can be replaced out. epromid [ECMTuning - wiki]

4. Well, with ECMLink, that's the only one that I know works, you can chance the readings from some of the gauges (boost gauge) to work as anoter value. Also eliminate CELs

You guys don't need to tell him this stuff.. He must search.. We cannot possible feed him enough information in this thread to make him understand what is needed to make a car run well or amazing.. He needs to search..

Very true!:thumb: I have learned so damn much about these cars by being bored at work and going through this site and vfaq.com and just reading.

I really appreciate the responses but please do not flame as I search as much as possible and only post when I need to. Anyways yes I do have a wideband although not yet installed (I'm actually completely stock right now and have been just gathering parts and information). So just to get this straight if I have an eprom ecu (thankyou Liquidx for the link) then I can just get a chip burned for my setup OR I can get ECMLink and do the tuning myself? This was where I was completely lost on the terminology sorry for my slowness. Also how would either of these work with the gm maf and/or maft?

Same here, that's what I'm doing at this moment haha I probably spend about 3hrs a day just reading all that is the dsm world

Pretty much, but getting the chip it'll be a single tune for the setup you give them. They are pretty good tunes, but with ECMLink, you'll be able to change the tune any time you need to so you get the best possible tune.

With v3 of Link, you can get a cable that will hook up to the gm maf and eliminate the maft (good thing)

As the others have said, go and do some reading on the different tuning setups out there and find what will be best for you. Most prob. will say to get Link however. There are programs out there so you can burn your own chips as well with the right tools.

Also, you can have Link moniter your wideband through the ECU so you wouln't need a gauge if you are on a tight budged or don't mind not having the gauge.

ECM link has an optional harness for the GM maf i believe but ECM link is the best tuning option you can get!. If you want i have a brand new EPROM ecu i bought for my 91 that i need to get rid of since i bought a 95. Il sell it for $200 +shipping. I got it for $300 from motoguys garage and it is socketed so you can pop chips in and out without having to have them soldered. You can also get ECM link and just drop it right in this ECU.

Depending on which ECU his car came with, he prob. won't need it. Also, sending the ECU out to ECMLink they will socket it and fix any problems it has. It's very affordable too to do that and it can be found at ECMTuning, Inc. they will also convert non eprom ecus to eprom for $165

Your post should have been in a PM honestly.

yeah sorry about that, i wasnt thinking! Gotta worry about the caps in a stock ecu though. My first 91 fried an ecu like it was an egg.

That's why you send it out, they socket it and fix anything that's bad for a very good price. I think it was $40 or so to get mine socketed and get my caps replaced.

Ok so here are my options:

1. gm maf + maft + 650s?

2. eprom ecu with chip burned + what do i do with the gm maf/maft??? + injector size 650 still???

3. eprom ecu + ecm link + gm cable + any size injectors

12.9 on a 16g its actually really good for a full weight car if you haven't ran 12 sec pass I dont think you should talk bad about someones time:nono:
Tuning is not just about turning knobs there more to it than just that knock.AFR.EGT
whats an eprom ECU look it up on google

MAFT - ?? not familiar with that set up

eprom ecu with keydiver chip and a safc $$

eprom chips are abusively cheaper and you can get by
ecmlink its relly the way to go IF you have the money

Ok since im bored I will save you the time..

A maf translator is a devise that is used to trick the signal coming from the gm maf and converts it to th elanguage that our mitsu mafs use and then tweaks it to your liking.. The translator will take that signal at 4 different points... The first knob on the translator is to get your injector size set.. Fullthrottlespeed has a "how to" on all of this and they have presets for your injector size. The second knob is idle/cruising. This will effect airflow numbers that are between 50-200 hertz about.. The next knob controls mid range which is right when you go into boost.. the last knob is WOT full boost where the hertz start getting up into the 1000s.. Then you can give the maf a rpm signal and you can switch into rpm mode and control the maf signal every 500 rpms..
Now you know how it works.. The reason you can't control injectors that are bigger than 6xx.. Is there are things called deadtimes/ latency time which is the time the injector has off.. You simply can't trick the airflow enough to make up for it in bigger injectors where the deadtimes are in the 300-400 microsecond when the stock is like 240ish.. I have seen 750s controlled by a neo and had success but that is the limit.. The SAFC and the maf-t are simple maf signal changers... The Eprom chip and ecmlink will change the code inside the ecu so you are using normal maf signals and actually changing what the injector does..

In ECMlink you can trick what the computer sees for a maf signal. I ussually have to mess with this because I am running a MAFT and dsmlink. I set-up my maf sliders so that my short term fuel trims and my long term fuel trim are in line.. The fuel trims will let you know if the computer thinks you are lean and it will compensate by adding fuel and same visa versa..

There is so much more to learn but thats a thought LOL

Ok I could look past the first hit but come on now you all are REALLY taking this too far. I did mention that I had a 2g with a safc setup and tuned it myself didn't I? So no use of explaining of how it works ie: it tricks the ecu for air flow to compensate injectors vs. Link can do timing etc. Ok ya I got that long ago. I was just merely confused as to this eprom ecu tuning as this is different along with me never using the maft either. There's much terminology that gets thrown around (eprom, chips, sockts, etc) and needed some clearing up with this, but now I get it. With this new knowledge of mine, I will probably try and tune with 550's and the maft for now depending if I have a eprom (will check later this evening).

Lastly awdmonster1904 my 2g (in my avatar) which was a GST ran a 12.9 trapping 111mph full weight with 550s, 190lph, 21lbs, on a s16g.

I really appreciate those who chimed in with positive, useful information.

There are some issues tuning with the MAF-T. Air temp for one, will throw your tune out of wack which is why most people try to stay away from it. Do you have the pro version? It's the lastest one out there and is the better one to use. If you do choose to go and get ECMLink, you'll be able to ditch the translator and still retain use of the GM MAF with the optional cable to hook it up like stock. Of course, you can also go speed density on v3 and ditch all of that stuff in lieu of 2 new sensors on your UICP/intake manifold.

If you want to keep the cost down and want to do link, wait until "Lite" comes out for about half the price and limited features. Seems worth it.

Sorry i didn't mention i ran that 12.9 at the dsmshootout and it was around 100000* out LOL... It was on fire that weekend... Well just to put it into comparing terms. I ran 12.60 a couple weeks later and the only thing i changed was dsmlink.. I ran one time that night.. Im sure it could of went alot better.. Dsmlink showed me shifting alittle early and the tune was safe...

I have v2.02 is that the latest? If I do get ecmlink then lite sounds like a good option down the road to keep the gm maf and just grab a cable. I imagine another month or two and I'll be at the point of being able to try this maft out and see how it goes and make a decision then. I'm merely seeking out my options right now.

Yes it was VERY hot that day. My best run was in the late evening and was rather cool, I'd say about 60 with the engine compartment rather cooled down additionally. That also does help the case for link cutting down .30 in the quarter...:thumb:

There is the MAF-T Gen 1, Gen 2 and pro. Lite seems like it'll be available in a month or so. The cable eliminates the need for the translator. Well, you have time and just go and read about all the available options out there including burning your own chips and what not.

ok .......good for you on your 12.9 i dont really care its just not cool for you to be like "12.9 thats slow car"if you ran 12.9 then you should have an understanding about your car and what you need to run 12 sec pass .. but anyways good luck on your research hope you find whats you need
