Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone has imported an Eclipse into Canada? If so, was it worth the effort? was it too much of a hassle?

I know i can save a lot of money strictly in the conversion of average US prices to average CDN prices of a 2G GS. but am i going to get reamed on taxes?

Thanks,

Abstraction

(sorry if this got double posted)

why not buy a USDM GC and swap it? A ton of guys are doing that around here, one of my buddies has one thats pretty much a JDM GC8 STi, cept its not RHD. Otherwise he's done every other JDM component he possibly could.

You are going to end up spending the same amount of money getting it street legal than buying a 2.5 RS and doing an engine swap. Just a thought But my guess to get it to pass safety would be to do the same crap to it that a 2.5 RS USD has.

Well, having a RHD would one up the "wow" factor, ( and it would be more fun). Or I could drive a mailtruck for the RHD.......Anyways, I suppose I could buy one in the US, but so far, I can't locate one where I live.... If worse comes to worse, I will buy one here in the States, but until then, I would like to try and import a WRX. Oh, the website I'm looking at is www.japan-partner.com if anyone wants to take a looksie.

I was looking at the interiors of the past EVOs, man, they have always sucked! And the tradition stays true all the way to the 9.. in comparison to the STi's.

It's not as easy as that, and if you think it is go right ahead. Come back and let me laugh at you when your car wont clear customs.

Hey guys, before the flaming or bashing starts, I would like to find some information about a project my friend and I are working on.

A very good friend of mine is stationed in Okinowa, Japan for the next year until he honors his service and returns from deployment. He currently owns a Lexus GS 300 (twin turboed inline 6 2JZ motor) which he bought over there for $2,200. It has 40,000 miles on it.

Now, he is in very close with a couple heavy tuners, all of whom can get some very rare, yet very genuine parts/cars. Basically, for the most part, my buddy can get any type of Skyline he wants. Stock, modded, totaled, whatever. Which is very very appealing to me.

We would like to import atleast one of the two cars mentioned. Preferably the R33, rather then the 2JZ. Maybe a 32, but we will see.

Biggest problem is getting these into the states. My friend is going to talk to some military guys, or superiors about bringing these cars or a car back into the states when he returns home. Whether then military does it or not, I'm willing to pay up to $5-$6,000 just the import the R33 alone. We would both split the cost, and mod the car for projects.

Now, nothing is set in stone, or validated yet. We know we CAN get these cars, and we know we WANT to get atleast on of them back to these states in our garage. The authorities are the biggest problem at this point, but how does the military feel about these things? Will they transport this car if my firends claims legal ownership? Would they make him pay a dividend of it? Or would we not even be able to think about it, let alone do it?

Please don't insult or flame me for this idea. We are very serious and it's been a topic of ours for a few months now. Seeing as how alot of you are fimiliar with this type of distribution, and military, we figured it would be a good idea to post something on the forums about this. Can anyone offer valid, ligitiment information to us? Thanks to all for reading and helping. :thumb:

I don't see the military shipping the vehicle that's not american spec to the united states unless it's already converted. Unfortunately before you can ship a vehicle with the military they go through an extensive check to make sure the car is american spec and that you can register it and get insurance on it etc in the states. I was planning on shipping a Skyline GTST from here (I'm stationed in Germany) and they said I would have to convert it to US Spec here or when it go to the states and it went through customs it would cost probably around $13,000 to get it converted. You also have to have orders to ship a vehicle when you're in the military, I don't know if they give orders from japan to ship a vehicle? Possibly, if a vehicle shipment is not on the military orders to ship then they will not ship it.

Is it worth it? Could be a really fun project but for $13,000 just to import it, but of course if you can basically get the car for free then $13,000 is a good price for an R33. What I would do is contact customs and find out what all has to be done to fully convert a car to US Specs and see if you two can handle most of the work yourself, or see if you can find someone who imports cars for a business that converts them for you, which could also be expensive.

Just figured I'd throw you a little bit of information, however it would definately be in your best interest to contact "officials" to see about getting the car into the US. Also another tidbit: Cars over 20 y.o. can be imported without having to convert. Which means if you can find an R32 or something you might not have any issues shipping one of those.. like an 89 model.. :)

Just food for though, and if you can't get it shipped military wise (since we usually get one shipment for free) then it's going to cost an arm and a leg ($2000+) to ship it from Japan to the US.

Hope I gave you some help and good luck.
PS: For $13,000 you could have a high 10 low 11 sec eclipse^~

hello everybody i have a question and before i get bashed yes i did a search i was wondering how hard is the process on importing a car to the u.s. from other countries i.e. germany .....im in the army and might be possibly reinlisting for germany was curious how hard it would be??? any information would be very helpful thanks

You going out an in to the country with the army would be nothing to it. You can bring your personal vehicals an all with you. No customs for you. Unless you pay grade isnt high enough for the weight limits they give you. I think a SGT Should have 4000lbs. of weight he can transport with him. Just go check with your transportation officer about it.

I've heard great things about being stationed in Germany in the Army... like buying a Beemer for almost half price and shipping it home for free... Make sure you research and get the Euro only version of the car (Larger cams, more displacement).:thumb:

I wonder what you searched for:

Put the idea out of your mind. For all intents and purposes, it's impossible.

Yeah... Forget about any ideas you ever had and quit your job:rolleyes:

I met a man who imported a JDM Honda, and he used a Lawyer who specializes in working with the DOT ....
He showed me a right-hand drive honda integra type-R a few years ago... After he payed for the car (He claims $4500), payed for shipping to Houston Texas (He claims only $1300 from Japan), he then payed a legal fee plus federal fees ($3000) He's got himself a Honda Integra Type R for half the Price of an USDM Type R. He also claimed that it could be done cheaper, but he had it expedited.

I even asked the guy "what about the safety bar in the door? did you have to install one?" he said "no" that the lawyer gets around all of that.

Also, the Military doesn't care where the car comes from. They issue their own safety inspection and it doesn't require much. They also don't get charged Duty (AFAIK) and shipping is free.

Being in the Military is probably the easiest way to get a "gray-market" car into the US.

Shipping is free to and from as long as you have orders to or from. The only issues with non usdm cars is you will have to have special insurance which sucks. IE your RHD skyline is hard to insure full coverage because its not a honda where there are parts easily found or bought.
But for DOT requirements, headlights/taillights, seatbelts, windsheilds ect. Your average non usdm car doesnt have the correct windsheild for this country. (marked anyway)

The impact bar in the door, and the tailights are the main concerns... you also need an orange relector in the front and a red one in the back, on each side.

LHD e-code headlights are fine by us standards, and as long as they aren't from France

The main problem is getting it registered in the US... if you get that done through the military, then all you have to worry about is safety inspection when you're discharged...
And most safety inpectors wouldn't know to look for those things
