Hey guys, I'm new here and got a quick question for ya. I have a 3" cat-back straight-pipe on my '97 GSX. It's throaty and deep, but I want it louder. What should I do? I was thinking of a larger, aftermarket downpipe. Maybe 3" to match the cat-back. Or should I just cut the cat altogether and weld a 3" piece from there? Or both?

Help me out, guys...

Correct, you will not pass emissions without the cat. If that is a problem, your other option is a high-flow cat in conjunction with a bigger downpipe.

Find an o2 simulator. That'll make the computer think the o2 is reading normal and it won't throw a code.

Get an external dump.:thumb:That way you can creep around town still, but when you want you can scare people:D
Damn DSM PWR you beat me to it;)

I would just get a 3in downpipe that eliminates the cat. But you will obviously fail emissions testing if you have to do it, and getting an o2 simulator will not work to pass either as they will see you have no cat.

He's right, the O2 simulator will not work for you to pass emissions. The dump tube is a good idea if you just want ridiculously loud.

I dont know where you guys are but here they don't look under the car. They just plug into obd2 diag port and if not cel light you pass.

rather then get a o2 sim, you can always buy a sparkplug defouler for about $3 and then use a dremel to open it up a bit for the o2 sensor to fit. This spaces the o2 sensor a bit out of the exhaust flow and keeps the cel light from coming on.

This does work. Friend of mine does the ebay sales for ssautochrome and when we sell the header/midpipe combo to alot of the spec v guys we do this for them and so far works like a charm.

It will work. Illinois Emissions testing for 1996+ vehicles is only a scan of the computer. There is no visual inspection and no smog test.

As far as O2 simulators go, you can build your own for practically nothing. Here are two links from the electrical tech articles section.

O2 Simulator #1

O2 Simulator #2

I'm not trying to encourage illegal activities, but a friend of mine removed his cat and pounded a section of pipe through the center of it with a BFH, then bolted it back up. Along with an O2 sim, he has never failed an emissions test. -But then again, where I live emissions testing is pretty much a big joke and not many places actually even perform the tests. Hence the use of a catless 3" turboback on my car.

Thanks, but if I remove the cat, how do I get the downstream O2 sensor to not throw a code? It needs to generate that flat voltage signal to pass emissions, right?

I have a catless exhaust and I havent thrown a code because of it, I think it just depends on the car.

Thanks, guys. I'll probably leave the cat for now and get a 3" downpipe. Later I'll go catless and see if I throw a code. If I do, I'll get the high-flow cat and clear the code. If thats not loud enough, I'll just get a hearing aid because I'll be deaf. :thumb:

I've got the Apexi N1 downpipe and catback, which eliminates the cat. It's pretty loud by itself. Not obnoxiously so, but I definitely wouldn't want it louder. It tends to attract attention wherever I go (of course, people around here don't know wtf my car is because they all drive "American" cars). It downright scares the sh*t out of people when the Tial 40mm opens up. I rarely let the car hit full boost when I'm driving around town.

I'm looking to move back to MD sometime soon. I plan on plugging back in all the emissions crap under the hood, and using an O2 simulator. My friend informed me that they might still check under the car, so I also plan on making a fake catalytic converter skin to stick underneath the car.

why not just get a cut out? you can keep your cat.converter too.

i have 3in apexi n1 trubo back with the dsmlink i went through emissions LOL, but i wouldnt do it agian after what i heard couold happen. but hey i passed and got my sticker

i have a straight pipe turbo back and i bought a high flow cat and it is just like a straight pipe. you are not able to see out the other end of a cat. mine you can see right through it. i would never be able to pass emisions. but if you show them recipts for things that you did to your car to fix it, they will give you a waiver.i think its like 300 bucks.
ex. new cat=200 new 02 sensor=50 new coil pack=75.... that is over 300 so they will just say you passed. atleast thats how they do it here in cleveland OH..
