Hi guys wanted you opinions. I just put a brand new hx40 on my car and theres a extreme amount of oil coming out the exhaust. 1st start up i had no restrictor but since then i added a .080. I have a -10 barb return fitting on the turbo and pan from extreme psi. I contoured the flange that bolts to the turbo like i read to do on here. Oil pressure is around 50 when cold. Im going to make a larger oil return this week and drill out the pan. The restrictor didnt change anything. My question is do u guys think i blew the turbo or could i correct the return hose and be ok. Ive seen a guy and work put on a turbo on a 5.9 with the return blocked off completely. He fixed the problem and the turbo was ok. I only ran the car maybe 5 mins total.

Let's us know when you get the drain fixed. It needs to as large as possible. Factory drains are over .750 I.d., and need it.

You can feed a Holset a hell of alot of oil but you have to have a big drain. I run -12an drain and feed at the OFH at 80+ psi cold and hot at 8k rpm. No issues at all on thrust surfaces.
If I were you, I would not restrict oil flow to it.
    They want oil.
Is it a genuine Holset or an Ebay Holset?

The reason it is smoking is it is more than likely pooling oil because it can't dump it fast enough out of the CHRA. Fix the drain, smoking should go away like @motomattx says.

Thats a great solution from RTM, been looking for something like that ......not having to pull/alter the pan to try one of those turbos is a pretty sweet deal , plus the hole could be opened up when it comes off at whatever point down the road.

    Thanks for sharing that

I run an HX35W with a -3an from the OFH and a -8an return. Never had an oil issue. I also run 20w50. When cold pressure reaches 80psi at idle. When it warms up, I’m still around 20psi. At full throttle it does go above 100psi.

I’ve had this set up for 5yrs now. As of today, still no shaft play.

Ok guys I made a new oil drain a few weeks ago, its 23mm about 7/8 big. I had to sort out my new sd setup I'm new to tuning myself. So I ran the car for a few mins today and it smoked out my garage were i thought the neighbor's might call the fire department. I ran the car around 1500 rpms have a side exit and there was oil on my wall. I'm really starting to think the turbo is toast it has zero miles on it.

Is the oil level in the pan below the drain fitting? if its not it wont drain, are you sure that its oil on the wall? my car when cold will leave black soot on the wall from the moisture in the engine when warming up.

If your (Dan) oil drain outlet flange is as small as I think it is from that photo......yea that would be the problem, all the oil is backing up into the center section still, that drain looks anemic. It doesn't matter how large your pan fitting is, your restricting it right where it starts.

Thats the new vs old fittings. There were both -10 barbs now there 23mm pan and turbo. The fitting is bigger than the hole in the turbo. The pan fitting is in the same location as stock just way bigger. I guess i either hurt it or bought i bad turbo.

Have you run the car at anything besides idle?

If you pushed enough oil past the seals, it could be pooled in the compressor and turbine housings, making it smoke for a while. Maybe pull the turbo, remove the housings, inspect and clean as best you can. Might also check the exhaust valve seals just to be prudent and verify the oils not coming from somewhere other than the turbo.

I thought about pulling it and cleaning it all out. I pulled the exhaust maniflod out a few inches and ran it the ports are clean of any oil

That's what I'd do at this point. If the ports didnt have oil in them from the valve seals then I'd clean the turbo out extremely well.

I would take it out and run it to see if it clears up as well. When my engine blew last year I was pouring oil out of the exhaust manifold and side exit. No way i could remove all of it without some spirited pulls. It smoked for about 20 minutes then it went away. Have you measured oil pressure on the feed line?

"Spirited Pulls". Gotta love the wordage LOL.
I smoked a few and yes thats what it takes to clear it all out.
Go out on the hiway and drive....with the cloud behind you.....about 15-20 mins should burn out any that will burn out. Mine always quit but its a lil freaky seein the oil cloud behind you just monitor oil pressure so you are comfortable with it running, just BELCHING out smoke for s few miles.
    My experiences anyway.
    I hated it.
