Resolved How to make BOV flutter

Hi!
Sounds childish but we all love turbo sounds.
And flutter/dose sounds always make you smile.
At the same time it hurts your turbo as you know it but I was wondering if there's a bov which kinda makes the same sound, I found hks ssqv but in so e videos it's just pssh and in some videos it does flutter.
Can someone help me on this, I have 16g as a turbo on 16psi

The best BOV sound is the one that is properly tuned. You want it to hold all the boost without leaking when your at WOT, and every other time, you want it to bleed off smoothly. Light lift should give a slight hiss, and slammed shut you want a Pshhhh - done. Choo Choo sounds are a givaway that its setup wrong.

My old SVQ had flutter.. depended on the load at blow off.

The “flutter” sound you’re looking for is what you don’t want, that means your blow off valve isn’t working correctly as the flutter sound is typically compressor surge that the blow off valve is there to eliminate (throttle closes, unused air needs somewhere to go, pushes back at the turbo resulting in the turbo briefly spinning the wrong direction, not good for turbo). Furthermore if you’re not using speed density or a GM maf in blow through configuration the blow off valve needs to be recirculated anyway which further muffles any sound that it’s making.

A fluttering blow off valve is one that is not adjusted properly. The sound you're hearing is the valve repeatedly opening and closing because the spring tension is too tight. If you're running anything aside from a ball bearing turbo, this sound will eventually damage your turbocharger.

I know how turbo works and why you need to have bov, I just wanted to know if there's a bov which makes a flutter sound instead of boring pssh, or do I have to upgrade my turbo to ball bearing or one with 6fins or both?

When I had my stock BOV, I got a nice pshh. It actually sounded identical to an Evo that someone in my neighborhood drives. Anyways, I have since moved to a Forge Motorsport billet aluminum 1G BOV, and it has a bit of a flutter, and will get quicker and higher-pitched when you increase the boost (i.e. when you go from a T25 to a 16G ). I'm not super experienced, but my thought process is that the flutter from a BOV is when the internal spring is too tight and the BOV opens and closes multiple times while relieving the pressure. The Forge Motorsport BOV I got came with some spare springs, but I think they are just tighter than the one I have now... maybe I should check that

That being said, the flutter without a BOV is the sound of the air being rejected at the now-closed throttle plate and going backwards and essentially hitting itself. Kind of a non-technical way of explaining it, but that's basically what's happening. The issue with this is the fact that this can cause unnecessary wear on your turbo because now it's got air trying to come back in which causes a lot of pressure and strain.

You might be fine running no BOV just for the sound if you're running low amounts of boost. But at the end of the day, a BOV is meant to increase the life of your turbo. If I were to delete my BOV for that fantastic stututu sound, I would immediately turn my boost down to, like, 10 psi and even then I'm not sure that would save me from wear on the turbo.

I've also heard that our cars really don't like running vented BOVs, so I'm assuming running no BOV at all would probably present some interesting tuning problems.

At the end of the day though, it's your car.

I definitely want to have a bov, that's why I'm even asking this, I was hoping if there was a bov which have a structure which would spin or something to make the flutter *shrugs*

And once again, I know exactly how turbo engine works and why you need bov and all that, I was simply just asking if there's a bov which makes a flutter sound, I only have ran stock bov and one greddy s and they're just boring "pssh"

Dose sound is more fun sounding but because I don't wanna brake my turbo, I was asking if there's a bov option to satisfy me or if I have to upgrade my turbo

Maybe I'll just do this, low rpm flutter will be at least something and shouldn't hurt turbo too much, at least until I get my ecm link and better turbo setup

Let off the throttle slow will do this, but as many have said it is hard on the turbo and it causes the compressed air to slam back into the compressor wheel.

Unfortunately, no BOV will give you this sound if that’s what you’re looking for OP. If you listen to my video closely on the first pull you’ll hear the flutter mine had. It was 100% BOV and not compressor surge. If you listen to the second pull you’ll hear more of the typical pshhh blow off without flutter.

I have that old BOV somewhere if you’d like to buy it.

Awesome! And it came with two additional springs that you can swap in, but I don't think it's adjustable beyond that.

I think the problem was that you were just not getting the answer you were wanting.. not that people were giving you the incorrect answers. NO flutter is acceptable is the resolved answer. You can make most any BOV flutter by increasing the diaphragm pressure, which also shortens the life of the turbo. So it would be a trade off for YOU to decide.
