They are basically the same engine. The hump is there because their is a belt cover that sticks up some.

Ok, to straighten things out... 90-99 turbo cars had the 4g63 and needed the hump for timing belt clearence. 95-99 non-turbo cars had a 420a, the timing belt is on the other side of the engine and doesn't need a hump. My guess is that all eclipses had the hump because it would be cheaper to make one kind of hood rather than two(one with a hump and one without) I also think the "hump" is for styling purposes.

Wow thanks for the info. I wonder if they will bring the hump/bump back for the 4g cars 4g63 rather then the 420a and if so would they be able to join the club?. Just one more stuiped question is the 420a turbo charged in the new neon?

Which DSMs do not have this. I know for sure I had a friend that had a 1990 Laser 1.8 that didn't have the bump but what about 1.8 Eclipses or Talons?

all have the bump, 2g n/t have the t-belt on the opposite side and dont need it but still have it. Same thing with the 1.8 they dont need the bump but still have it. I think you may be thinking of the neon cause they need it on the dohc but not the sohc, but some sohc have it and other dont.

That's not true. I know for a fact that my friends 1990 1G 1.8 Laser did not have it. It was a stock hood. And no, I'm not thinking of a Neon. I know how to tell the difference, but I have noticed what you're talking about with the neon.

Maybe the ones with the popups didn't have the bump. I'm pretty sure I've seen 1.8s with the fixed headlights have the bump.

'90 and '91 DSM's 1.8 have no hump in the hood. I'm '92 they came with the "power bulge" or whatever ### name people gave it.

yes the 90-91 1.8 had no hump, but all other models did, i have a 1.8 90. i also heard that the 2g's dont need the hump but they put it there to keep the "style" or whatever you wana call it going. but the 1g 2.0's need it for cam gear clearance.

There is a company that makes a hood without the bump. I can't remember what company it was though. It will only fit a non-turbo as the bump makes it possible to close the hood over the timing belt.
