I plan on putting some cams on my 2g, maybe something like HKS 272s but im not sure if i need to run aftermarket springs or if i can use the OEM ones

You may or may not have to, it's a tough call with springs. 272s are right at the general limit and while it sucks because it's harder to replace them while the head is still on, there are tricks to do so. If that's not an issue then I just wouldn't risk stock springs with 272 ramp rates personally.
Someone on the thread said depends if the springs are old or not, the car has been sitting for a long time before i bought it and if i end up getting the BC cams i think its just better to replace the springs as well. I would rather figure out what springs work and do it correctly than risk bending valves and having to do the whole process again

If you are running BC cams, why not run BC springs?
Springs with Steel Retainers here:

Or with Titanium Retainers here:

And BC's website says that you can run either stock or BC0100 springs with their 272 cams.

Their NEW Stage 3 cams say that they REQUIRE the BC0100 Springs.

Yeah, me :p
Any aftermarket spring or the Evo8s will work with 272s. Once you really get up there, and especially above 280 like 284 or even higher, you'll want an crazier spring like a dual.

Anecdote, I still have stock cams but my springs were 30 years old, so BC0100s like Marty posted above is what I ended up putting in even just for peace of mind. I'd like a set of 264s or 272s though.. just have to pace my spending.

Sorry I couldn’t remember that you said that . But the BC cams that I might plan to go with are BC0101 with the BC0100 springs

So which ones would be good the stage 2 or 3. And does the stage 3 have lope at idle as well like the 2?

Now I will say I’m throwing a set of BC 272’s in an otherwise stock head in another project, that one I have no plan to need to rev over 7k in that configuration so I’m using the 156k mile springs in that head without hesitation. My other head now has Evo 8 springs with it after experiencing the valve float.

That all depends on various factors. If you’re running something like a 16g you wouldn’t want to go beyond the 272’s, if we’re talking stock turbo then you’re not ready to be swapping cams yet, if we’re talking a 600+ horsepower big turbo configuration then something in the 280 ballpark would make sense.

Ohh so what about if im running a 20g turbo?

Not at all. The BC 0101 cam has a lift of 10.18/9.66mm lift. It is quite a bit more than stock but not into the radical or "race" type cam selection. It is a good all around pickup for the engine over stock, if everything else is fine. Duration is what you "hear", lift will give you more top end rpm's. The more duration out of a 360* circle that a cam has, the longer it keeps the valves open, allowing an ear to hear some of the explosion going on inside the combustion chambers. Not all cams that are listed as "272", have the same lift. Kelford and GSC both have almost another full mm of lift of the valve while keeping the valve open the same amount if time. I will link a cam spec thread if I can find it. The advertised duration is usually at .050" but is also given at .040, just fyi.
Just stuff that should be a given for knowledge but sometimes needs explaining.
Marty

Yes, I should have clarified, my reference was in regards to BC’s duration listing, brands like to list off duration but for example while BC, HKS, and Kelford reference a 272 duration they’re all different cams with different specs overall from each other.
Ohh okay thanks
