Hi to all DSM owners

So the problem is my engine started to knock but i cant find out what is making that sound.

1. I already had rodknock before so i tryed to turn of 1 cyl at a time and this time there was no change.
(I still have questions so will turning of 1 cyl at a time make a difference to the sound even if it is a main rod bearing because i had a knocking Connecting rod bearing and turning off the correct cyl completely removed the knock so that way i could know which cyl bearing was bad)

2. I know that connecting rod bearings only knock at certain rpms (2000-3000rpm) and main rod bearings at different rpms but i cant remember at what rpms.
This knock only starts to hapen when the engine starts to warm up and gets louder as the engine warms up more and then it knocks all the time at idle and only stops when reved past 2000rpm then it only apears when the rpm drop under 2000rpm.( no knock when driving it only knock when rpm drop lower then 2000rpm and on idle it knocks like a diesel:mad:)

3.The sound seems to be coming from the right side of the engine (that is the side where the timing belt and other belts are) so i replaced all the timing belt system pulleys (checked the auto tensiore it was ok) and the waterpump the alternator and the steering pump are all ok (i didnt do anything to the oil pump so could the oil pump be making that knock?)

4.It is not valve system noise because the hidraulick lifters where checked 3 times and cleaned they are all perfect and the oil is coming(they are the latest revised generation hidraulick lifters)

5. I had taken off the oil pan because it needed replacement and havent found any metal shavings there but i havnet removed and checked the bearings also.

If i havent mentioned something or you had the same problem or a have a suggestion where to look next plese let me know.

will try to upload a video of the sound if i will be able to record it clearly.

Thankyou

Sorry for my English

knock is gonna be hard for some one to diagnose over the net, if it's a rod pull one plug wire at a time and when the knock goes away that's the bad cylinder, main bearing knock though, it's more consistant and deep and i've rarely heard it at idle, it sounds like loose timing componenets to me, a friend had an awefull knock he couldn't figure out and i was clueless too, turned out the kevlar timing belt being swapped for an OEM solved it (but i'm unsure what else might have changed durung that swap)

best of luck

I also cant pin point from where the knock is coming exactly.
I am using a metal stick with a aluminum can on the end and it really increases the sound but i still cant pint point it exactly from where only that it is coming from the side where the belts are when listening normaly.

And could it be a balanceshaft (or does a balance shaft knock all the time?) or oil pump making that knock?

Also maybe its me but when i removed all of the timing belt covers the sound was more clear but as i said i replaced the pulleys and the auto tensioner was not knocking when i lisened to it throug the metal stick to hear if it was it it was ok but the sound is still there somwhere.

A rod knock doesn't have to happen at a certain rpm. It can happen at any rpm depending on how bad the damage is. If your oil has a silver metallic color to it, engine will need to be gone through. Hard to tell from the video, but does it get better or worse under a load, or at higher rpms? If it gets worse under a load, rod or main bearings are likely. If it gets better with higher rpms, top end likely. I'd check your oil pressure with a manual gauge.

1.This knock has hapened 4-5 months ago and i have removed the oil pan 3 times by the time and didnt found any silver oil or metalic junk.

2. Now it seems it does not appear under load (because no knock when driving only if your rpms are lower then 1500 it knocks when driving the same as no load on engine) it only hapens at idle 850-900rpm and if i raise the rpms from idle to lets say 1500 it still knocks but after 1700rpm it disapears and does not apear at an any rpms above 1700 well atleast i do not hear it when driving but under no load it does not knock even at 7000rpms.

3.Also the knock seems to appear only when the engine is warm when it is cold it does not knock only when starting the engine theres another strange less mettalic knock for a few seconds when the engine is started cold and then dissapears and then this main knock that is in the video slowly starts to appear as the engine warms up and then knocks all the time.

Will be checking the oil pressure again but the last time i checked it was fine at the bottom part.
I havent checked what is my oil pressure at the head but i have read at a forum to open the oil cap and look if the rocker arms are squirting oil and if they do the pressure is ok can some one please confirm this?

And for this knock it sounds very loud at the video that you cant even hear the engine well in reality it is quieter.

Well at this time i am thinking
1.(auto tensioner)-but i have listened to it and while the engine was running it didnt seem to be making the knock
2. (camshafts)-do they knock because i havent found a video of them knocking.
3. (silentshafts)- but they spin twice as fast as the engine so they would knock a lot faster.

(power steering pump, alternator, water pump are all ok checked them and ran the engine without them for a short time didnt change a thing about the knock)

it is not the belt system so only balance shaft system and cam shafts left

My knock disapears after 1500 rpm does yours disapear when raising rpm?

Now i was replacing the belt because the banance shaft was placed wrong and the 2 gears inside the oil pump are also placed wrong but i havent removed the oil pump so i havent fixed that for now but i noticed some play on the oil pump.

There is some slight play when rotating it has some play before it starts to spin the balance shaft and if i rotate the gear back and forward i can make a knock is this normal?

If someone did not understod.

If i rotate the oil pump should it have some play before starting to spin the balance shaft or not?

It seems i have found the problem it is the exhaust camshaft.

Now i have an european eclipse 1G 1992 with 2.0L 110kw N/T 6bolt.

And i have found a US eclipse 1G 1991 2.0L with 101kw N/T 6bolt that has different cams lower compresion and uses a diferent ECU then the european.

I want to use the US eclipse engine for parts for my engine.

So the question is will everything fit and does someone know what exactly are the diference in the US and EUR cams of eclipse 1G.

Thankyou

So im having this same issue with my 91 talon. At first i was thinking wristpin or rod bearing, but i finally pulled the pan today, and the bottom end was solid. Oil was blackish brown. But even just turning the engine over with a ratchet, you could hear a distinct metallic knock. The car has 112k on it with what looks like original timing components, but the timing is still spot on. Anyone know of anything it could be that hasnt been covered in this thread?
