I can't take my launches seriously after watching Top Fuel do it.
 
my buddy had a stock 90 talon awd for a while. he did one really good launch once, its just like a feeling of OMG . he was at a light, and he brought up the revs to about 2500, the light turned green, he dropped it and hit the gas and jumped through the intersection at like 30 before we were at the other side. it was neato. too bad im a lowly gst. i wait till the other car thinks its winning, then i hit it in 2nd and cream them.
 
Wheelhopping in an AWD?

I dont have any cool AWD launching stories, but in my old Integra GSR with a centerforce clutch i could launch that bi*** so hard the windshield wipers would go on and the radio would turn off from wheelhop :thumb:
 
Test drove a 3000GT VR4 with a friend yesterday (he's looking for one, he drove it first). It launched a lot harder than my AWD Subaru wagon :D . . . until you tried to shift into second, at which point it made some pretty gnarly grinding noises. I don't think he'll be buying that one, LOL.
 
Where is that video clip of the guy with a nitrous shot on a big 16g spinning through second at the track?

Not an AWD story but coll to me anyways,also not a dsm.
My dad had just finished his 81 z28 383 stroker,carterafb, putting 500 on the ground. we go out for the maiden voyage he revs it up to 5 grand and dumps the clutch, I swear I could not get the dashboard because he planted my ass in the seat white smoke rolling out the rear, as he shoots across the intersection the car starts to slide I see cars coming as it's fishtailing. Then POW the drive shaft goes. We get out and the drive shave is laying out on the ground and it looks like this V. he went through three high performance drive shafts aluminum, composite, and some race shaft. we finally got one that was strong enough. we went to a truck(big rig) shop and had them make a drive shaft out of this thick ass pipe they had. Not the only launch we did in his hot rods but that one sticks with me as the funnest
 
i broke the clutch disk springs on an ACT 2100 while i was racing a ZO6 in my 92 AWD.
 
Wheel hop so bad it turned on my wipers - so like an idiot insted of flipping them off I kinda pulled on the lever also so it turned on the squrters - DUH.
All that and trying to shift - Doesnt go together to well. OMG
 
sometimes i can light up all 4 tires from a stoplight, need to drop it at like 6k RPMs and they will spin for like 1 sec and then GRIP and you get slammed in the seat. better then a rollercoaster :thumb:

Ive never been in an AWD sports car before. :(

:laugh: That's my car.... I got a personalized tag that spells WHIPLSH. That's what my wife called the car.(Her neck hurt after a small launch one time.) She won't even drive the car anymore..... My neck has hurt after launching it at the track.
I have a new suspension now and the launch is even better. My first launch with the new setup was a 1.62 60ft. I can't wait to launch it at a higher rpm, but the street tires just can't handle it. AWD IS GREAT!!! If you haven't been in one, find someone that has one, sit way back and enjoy.
 
A built 455 W30 rocket with a 4000 rpm stall converter, ratchet shifter , a trans brake and line locks...

My neck was funky for a like a week..

Well that was RWD....

AWD... I guess the hardest was when I rode in a spooled center diff car... With stock spiders I don't want to do it that hard because I'll break sh*t...

Notice how he just does'nt pound on the trans as hard as possible... It's sort of a progressive rate launch.. Starts off soft then gets off the clutch more..

Now this one is an even faster run but the other car has a faster 60ft.. It's the kind of launch that I went thru in that oldsmobile.. Let go of a button on the auto shifter while floored and keep it floored and off it goes. There was like .3 difference in RT and the other car must have had some problems down the track because it only ran 11.7 despite the 60 and the rt..

Last year being the first time ever at the track I had wheelhop bad. It was my second run ever at the track so I was no familiar with the how sticky the surface was for the 60ft section. Well I revved to 5k and got way too excited and dumped the clutch. Holy shit the car hopped so bad my wipers came on and I hit my head on the roof of the car, but being that I was inexperienced at the time launching the car at the track I just held the gas down instead of letting off...needless to say it was my best 60ft that night. I'm lucky I didn't blow the tranny on that one OMG

Just this year at a different track...very sticky track with brand new tires and the studderbox I hit a launch so hard that my vision when a little blurry/tunnel like at the initial part of the launch, it was cool :cool: Mind you it was only a 1.7 60ft, but it felt freakin awesome
 
I guess marco at magnus would be the one to ask.. He never seemed to have too much mechnical sympathy for the stock transmission...

You can launch hard as hell and still not be as fast as someone who launches to be quick...

The best "fast as hell" DSM drag cars usually jolt things harder on shifts.... The launch pulls more g's but it is not an event that begins with a slam.
 
I've spun them in first, got wheel hop and also hurt my girlffriends neck because she didnt have it on the head rest. It just slammed back onto it. That resulted in me giving her a very lengthy neck massage.
 
6500rpm studderbox dump with a centerforce dual friction.
23psi with c16 at the drag strip.

I spun all 4 off the line and didnt move doing so. 3.7 60ft As soon as my ass end started sliding towards the center (and I realised I wasnt moving) I hit 2nd and my center differential exploded.
According to the dsmlink I made 502.3 ft/lbs of torque right before the diff gave up.

And before I get called a dumbass, I was nervous didnt mean too.
And damn these helmets and lack of headroom in dsms. :D
I bought a welded center diff the next day for both cars.



A friend of mine with a 93awd and act2600 regularly dumps his off the rev limiter and pulls 1.5 60ft's. There is nothing like the sound of a wastegate dumping (shooting blue flames) bouncing off the rev limiter
 
And to think some other people manage to pull 1.4 and even 1.35 launching around 4-5k and not break anything..
 
About two weeks ago I got a ride in TSIAWD's 95 Talon. This car is totally loaded. He has built a 1G motor and put it in. Running a 50 trim, Dsmlink, Tial External Wastegate, FMIC, Fluidyne Alum Radiator..... Lot's of internal stuff done too. anyway he hadn't gotten it completly tuned yet. We did two launches and oh my god. I was screamin' like a little girl. I just kept building boost and we kept getting faster. I have never had that type of experience. Can't wait to ride in it when he gets it completely tuned.

My 56trim on alcohol has me :D too....

I'm waiting untill I go 4-spider with the center to really get on it.... I'm sure I have done a 1.5-1.6....
 
yeah i used to drop my clutch a lot.. cause it would just lay the smackdown on people on the street and they would be like WTF !!! but now that i just paid 3 grand to get a new tranny put in, im gonna be a lot nicer to it. Im gonna feather out my clutch now instead of just straight foot off the pedal madness

caution to you clutch dumpers, it will catch up to you!!!
 
When I raced an RX7 about 2 months ago I had my cell phone on the visor, I always hang it there and when I launched it flew off and hit my head then fell behind the seat.
