1997 mitsubishi eclipse gsx. I've read the other threads on this and they are somewhat similar but not specific enough. I'd really appreciate any suggestions and help, if you need me to be more specific about anything just ask. Here it goes: It is extremely tough to shift into first gear and it grinds into first only when the car is on (duh on the grinding part). But when I keep my car off and shift in and out of every gear I can do it with no problem. I changed my master and slave. I'm full on fluid and my clutch is clearly fine if I can shift when car is off. The only thing I can think of last is the clutch cable, but I'd like some more experienced advice on this. Its especially hard to get into first, but other gears can be a bother at times. I basically have to shove it in:( 135xxx miles on car/engine/tranny. Thanks again for any help.

Have you bled the clutch? We don't have a clutch cable, this isn't a honda!
Bleeding Clutch

Either this or. You just need a clutch. Sounds like the clutch to me, and you dont have a clutch cable. You have a master cylinder, a steel brake line, a slave cylinder. You do have shifter cables but most likely not them with the symptoms you are describing sounds like you just simply need a clutch. Do you know how many miles are on the clutch?

My bad I meant to say shifter cable I was rushing through this. And yea clutch is bled and adjusted. If the clutch was bad wouldn't i struggle to shift even when my car is off? I'm just asking on this

No because the transmission is not turning. How did you bleed the system? Did you bench bleed the master cylinder?

And this is going out on a limb here have you checked all of your trans to block bolts ie bell housing bolts? These some times come loose and will not able you to fully disengage the clutch.

I bled the slave cylinder

Also I'm sorry I forgot to mention this big part. This problem began after I changed my master cylinder. Before that my clutch was fine, smooth. So maybe I didn't align something properly or need to bleed it again.

Well start by taking of the master cylinder again, put it in a vise find a hose and fill the res. with brake fluid then take the hose and some sort of fitting and run the hose from the fitting and stick it in the res. completely submerge it and pump it till all of the air is out of it. put it back on. hook up your line then have some one hold down the clutch all the way to the floor then with a wrench crack the bleeder on the slave cylinder. when the air is out close it and tell them to do it again. DO NOT LET HIM PICK UP THE PEDAL UNTIL THE BLEEDER IS TIGHT. and repeat this step alot till the air seems to be all gone.. NOW the important step have your buddy get out and help you do this I dont care how you do it just do it fast. NOW take out the bleeder completely and hand it to your bud and with needle nose vise grips lightly but firmly grab the slave rod at the trans and force it all the way into the slave cylinder it self. and as fast as your buddy can put the bleeder back in and do not let go of the rod until that bleeder is back in other wise you will be re doing all of this. because it will suck air right back into the system.

My problem...

From what your speaking of your clutch is not fully disengaging. How I fixed mine besides taking it all apart was take off your slave still connected to the lines. Open the nut and push the rod in and out to get about 1/2 cup of fluid out. Makes sure someone is filling it in. I know you'll get some air in but work the system inside the slave. After that bleed it and make sure the master is pushing the right amount of fluid required to push the slave. If you still have problems pm me.

I had a similar problem on one of my old 3000gt VR-4's and it was the clutch fluid. There was too much air in the system and the clutch wasn't fully disengaging. I'd try bleeding it out some more. To test this theory, if you pump your clutch a bunch of times in a row, see if it feels better temporarily after the pumping, then it will slowly get worse.
