What do you guys think? I've heard obvioulsy gsx for traction but then GS-T for speed? what do you have and do you like it? also how do stock trannys hold up in the 2g's with high hp numbers?

Personal preference...that's all I'm gonna tell ya. Drive both and decide which YOU like not what everyone else thinks. Personally, I'm a FWD guy myself. Owned both...just prefer it. And stock trannies are pretty good in 2g's. Even with LSD I was putting over 450 to the crank and never had any problems with it. I know of people putting over 600 to it.

Well if you plan on making any power at all and want to use all that power with ease then get AWD if not get FWD. You can make a FWD stick but it takes more effort.

Just take's talent :thumb: At the track on normal tire's I could get traction easily in second. Never had a problem doing big burnout's through all the gears. Gotta have lots of throttle control LOL.

Ease being the key word here. Effort/Talent, maybe you and I are talking about the same thing???? LOL

i really like my awd because of the traction in the rain and other bad conditions; however, i've driven a fwd (non-dsm) for so long that i would really like a fwd dsm too.
fwd is not the way to go for speed, the awd 1g's have no governor ;)

Couldn't have said it better myself. The awd guys will come in and say fwd suck blah blah blah. The fwd guys will come back at them saying awd takes no talent a fwd can be just as fast blah blah blah. Personally I went from fwd to awd back to fwd and plan on staying. Alot of people go from fwd to awd and swear by it. Drive both, drive highly modded ones of both. Take a ride in both its all about your choice. It also depends on what you want to use it for.

I went from a fwd to awd eclipse and i can tell you its a big difference. Around town its much easier to have a little fun, also autocrossing is much easier than fwd.

However for the track fwd is going to have its advantage. At good 1/4 tracks the ground is very sticky and with a good launch, you can get close to an awd car, plus your 400 pounds lighter.

Drive both, I personalyl swear by AWD and will never go back to FWD, not to say FWD isnt fun and has its uses, but not my cup of tea.

I made the mistake of not driving an AWD before purchasing my FWD Tsi. Thus far, I have no regrets. I love the power, even if traction is an issue in lower gears. On the highway, which is where I have most of my fun, anyways, it's a blast and traction is a non-issue. I don't think you can go wrong either way, it just depends on what you want to accomplish with your car. Thats what you've got to decide first. Set goals, and then see which route is easiest for you.

I have been a RWD guy my whole life until I got into DSMs. Personally I love the AWD but I did have fun driving my buddies SRT at the track even if it did spin and wheelhop its way down the track I still got a 13.9 out of a stock srt. To me though nothing beats getting an awd drive sideways in turns, or a really hard launch and watching your passenger reach for the Oh Crap bar that is not there.

Just drive both and see which one you really like better. I drove FWD and AWD DSM's. I can say I LOVE AWD. Like most AWD guys, I am going to say AWD is the way to go, but you should def go out test drive both and whichever you like better, get that one. :thumb:

i love the awd great traction..i do however miss burning tire..on take off..i never owned a fwd dsm..but just in general...i did thank god that i had awd when we had the blizzard in ny..because i never got stuck.. so im for AWD

yes the awd helps a ton with all the snow we get here. also the awd keeps me from getting in alot of trouble! LOL darn fbodys!

^^^hahaha,I haven't owned a fwd turbo dsm,I had a 2g gs.AWD is nice to have, but not a must thing to have.My 2g gs took turns better then my 1g,however this is not a fair comparison,as my 2g had sportlines on agx's with 225-50-16 pirellis,it handled great,my 1g has stock suspension on shitty falkens 205-40-17's. Sure as soon as you get over 300 fwhp traction may start becoming an issue from a start but after that,it's happy sailing.I'm sure with a similar suspension and tire setup my 1g awd will outhandle my old 2g.On the good side, less parts to break, less drivetrain loss and less weight.I always say i wouldn't think twice about trading my 1g awd for a 2g gst.But a 2g gsx,now thats a dime pice right there. These are simply my opinions on thefwd awd issue, whatever you do get,get one in good shape.

FWD DSMs have excellent traction for being FWD. Better than many RWD cars i have driven. Sub 2.4 60ft times on a FWD are crazy easy and very, very difficult with other FWD performance automobiles.

PO of my car had her down to 13.5 on stock fuel, stock 14B, stock sidemount, stock suspension, 225 street radials, and 2.5" exhaust.

Modifying your suspension geometry, adding properly dampening shocks, and slicks will cut your 60fts to under 2 sec with some power. If FWD hondas can go 10s then FWD DSMs can too. It is always cheaper to get an AWD shell to achieve the same results in the 60ft. But where's the fun in that:p

if you want to know how well fwd can do in a straight line, check out dsmtimes.org
all it takes (besides power :p) is skill to make a fwd dsm as fast as an awd... to a point

The only thing I would suggest is that it costs a little more to have a good FWD at the track. You'll probably need suspention upgrades, slicks, and probably an LSD to get the most out of your car, whereas a stock AWD doesn't NEED these things to get traction (but they help).

FWD 2g's are actually pretty good in the snow. I live in Michigan and we get random snow blizzards all the time. I traded my 2004 Lancer OZ Rally edition in for the GST this winter. The GST handles WAYYYY better than the "rally" car. The Lancer was more fun to drive in the snow, but the GST is more stable and "safer". AWD will always be better in traction, i'm not trying to say a FWD car is better than AWD for snow. I'm just saying they're really not as bad as some people make them out to be. If your worried about having a bad "launch" then look into buying a LSD. It really is all opinion though. Drive both from a stand still, on the highway, and in "bad" weather if you can. Then choose what you like best.

Have you EVER done all wheel drive dounuts?

I had a awd a couple years back and loved the launch at the track, however it ate through drivetrain like nothin. So thats why i bought my gst this time.I have not ran at the track yet but i can already tell its gonna be much harder to get a good 60ft with FWD.

i disagree with a FWD being a more fun street car then an AWD car. i have a 99 gsx and i can honestly say this is better then any gs-t i have ever driven. It does differ from 1st gens - 2nd gens. If you are one to street race, and not having the track stickyness then you will want AWD. Good thing about FWD is you can find them more cheaper.

yea tires last too damn long on AWD i miss the ability to burn em off once in a while;) AWD on the freeway would loose to a FWD if there both stock b\c the engine looses more power to rotating mass from Xfr case and drive shafts and all that, and AWD costs more
