I recently got an offer from a friend who knows a person selling a 95 Eclipse GSX. It has the following
New 6-Bolt
New tranny
2100 Act clutch
3" cat back
#"down piping
New Turbo
New Bov s-type
and a whole bunch more.
however there is a little body damage on the driverside bumper and fender. just scratched not acctually broken. Stock suspension, wheels and breaks. Its red and has 79xxx n the body and 12oo on the motor

$7000
should I do it???? :dsm:

I'm not gonna lie, the difference in the pull is HUGE. The GST has a bit better turning radius, a bit less drivetrain loss (not too important but it counts), and seems to cost less in the long run

For the GSX there are alot more drivetrain components to worry about, but you are distributing the power over a larger area. Apparently with the setup I'm about to get I should burn them in 4th WOT.... but if you don't plan on racing from a stop much.... that is the biggest place AWD comes in handy (other than the snow). I hear with the Quaife I'm getting and slicks I shouldn't have too much of a traction problem at the track, and thats the only time I'll be launching on my drivetrain that hard.

PLUS... one thing I looked at was some parts that are for the AWD are $200 instead of $35, but quite a few others are at least $20-$30 more. I say if you don't plan to race from a stop alot and you really need a daily driver and especially if you are a broke college kid..... go FWD. Either way I would look into the eagle talon. Same car, much cheaper.

...yeah, thats the worse bias description i've heard in a long while. He lives in North Dakota...he definately wants the GSX. Its not winter wonderland out there. Unless he said he was going to garage it for the winter I would say hands down the GSX. There's a reason why people will pay the extra money. In racing FWD < RWD < AWD. Which makes the GST at the bottom of the food chain, plus understeer sucks.

I am not dissapointed at all with my FWD at the track, or in the summer. Takes A LOT of practice to get the FWD launch down. With AWD its just rev and drop... so AWD is easier for sure.

Sux in the winter though.

If you are planning to do any bracket racing or anything the FWD typically has a wider variety of events available, althought usually the AWD will be allowed to compete with the RWD.

Have you ever driven AWD? FWD can't even compare to it in handeling or launches

Have you ever read what I posted?

I agree with everything you stated.

I should clarify however, FWD sux in winter. My post made it seem like I said AWD sux in winter.

I owned a 94 tsi awd before I bought the 99. (94 sh!t a brick before I knew anything about cars, so I got rid of it and bought a grand am when I was 17... big mistake!)

I am just saying that on dry pavement my FWD just takes more work to perform... not that it doesnt perform. Some people swear that the FWD platform is uncapable. NOT TRUE>

With a brand new 6-bolt though???

There is no such thing as a brand new 6 bolt motor.. It may be a rebuild but dont get the impression your gettin something that is perfect as if you bought it new.

Again like someone said the GST vs the GSX threads are everywhere just search..

7k is expensive for a 95 definitley, regardless if it has a 6 bolt.

5k would be what i would take it for.. but i guess if u got the 7k to spend then go ahead. but if u wanna get a good deal all you gata do is keep your eyes open and be patient and something will come along.

so what I want to know is this. If I was to drive a GSX or a GS-T all year round b/c im in collage and can only have 1 car which one would be the best for both dry pavement and winter driving all racing aside and Eclipsei95cl your defanatly right about there not being a thing as a new motor. you guys are right Talons are good cars but I already had one and if i ever want to change body components It is hella cheeper for eclipse body parts I know couse I had some lady slide through an intersection in mid winter of last year

i dont think thats totally true. its not just rev and drop unless u want a jacked up tranny. You have to kinda feather the clutch out at just the right speed matching the engine RPM. It takes just as much practice to launch an AWD than a FWD and when perfected the AWD launch is much more effective!!!

Ah this almost makes me feel better about owning fwd but there is a lot to consider. AWD could give u more problems but it has traction, a KEY factor in any race from a stop and ofcourse including the quarter mile. This is all from what I've seen, so anyone feel free to say I'm wrong but with fwd, have fun being stuck in the 14's maybe high 13's without drag radials or slicks but if u add those, u get that traction but then they're the chance of breaking the axle, and your ganna want a nice lsd aspecially since your fwd so there's another 1,000.

Now also daily driver, consider the weather where u live. Here in New England I'd be having a blast in the snow with awd but with my fwd it'd be such a pain just to get out of my parking lot.

From a roll, yes fwd is awsome, but all in all I think awd is just the better choice aspecially for the qaurter mile, you'll be in 12's with enough power but if u had that power in a fwd, you'd be spinning and wheel hopping for those 12 seconds.

This is all from what I've seen and heard, my car is being rebuilt right now so soon I'll have to deal with these traction issues I'm sure :thumbdown

Why do you read it then or for that matter reply

Get the AWD....I have a stock N/T (so FWD) and I live in Minnesota, where it snows in bunches too. Even in my GS I don't get traction in the snow, and thats with 140hp....I don't even want to imagine how bad it would be to be puttin out 210hp

I can see this post going either way if the cars were say a 95 GSX with 100K or a 99 GS-T with 60K. Then there would be an economical advantage to the FWD being that it would have a higher trade in value.
Since this isn't the case this post will undoubtly be filled with "get the AWD" responses. This is very understandable, I mean AWD will definately be a more reliable vehicle to be driving in snowy weather. Also the dry pavement performance is a huge advantage in the quarter.
I love my FWD and I wouldn't trade it for an AWD. I think the whole traction issues are way over played, I mean people are talking about spinning the tires throughout the whole quarter, that is ridiculious. With some carefully chosen suspension upgrades and some driver skill a FWD can put down good times without a set of monster slicks. THe fact that the car already has a 6 bolt in it does make some wonder about how it was driven before the motor switch. And there is a good chance that the driving habits didn't change once the new motor was dropped in. I would definately have some certified - unbiased - mechanic take the car for a test ride and tell you what he/she thinks. Sometimes there are small things that you won't pick up when you are dead set on getting something.

I agree with the post above and damn nice car man! But it depends on your goals I guess, I hang out with a bunch of dsms here that are awd and some that are fwd but it seems that the awd will always get the better times the more mods u have aspecially. I know someone who had 360fwhp and got a 13.5 around with street tires while awd cars with a good ammount less whp were getting his time or faster, with less hp keep in mind. So I guess it all depends on your goals...

iam scared to drive my car in any condition where the roads are wet.. i slid/ hydroplaned in my eclipse one time when it was raining and ever since iam scared to shi7 to drive fwd in the rain... iam looking right now for either a awd dsm or a 95-98 240sx but i dont know how bad rwd is in the slippery conditions as well... i think that might slips as well i drove my friends wrx when it had just rained and the roads condition did not even justify in my head to how it was so thats whats leaning me to get an awd... but to have a skyline powered 240 as a project car would be nice...

CyberEye The shop is in Fargo ND its called straight line Specialties it is a good DSM shop I would trust thoes guys with anything and I dont really know what the green is I would guess an Integra you should check out there website Straightlinespecialties.com

UPDATE

Talked to the mechanic that worked on it. He said the kid tried to put a new motor in and failed. so he had them order him a JDM motor and put it in. along with all the new stuff. It sat in his grage for 2 years before he took it to them a year ago and the mechanic whom I know even though I thought I didnt Said he hasbeen working on it and the kid is out the money and the only way for him (Mechanic) to get his money will be if the kid sells it. He sais it is in good condition though and looks like it wasnt abused

Any car for the best launch you have to do that. However if you rev'd and dumped the AWD would grab better than the FWD. Just more user friendly, handles better and overall a better all around car.

Theres a reason why expensive cars aren't FWD, and theres also a reason why any true performance car is either RWD or AWD.

There's no real arguement here, its no contest. For those who play off their FWD car as 'eh its alright.... or it works for me', well it may work for you but its not the best alternative. Would you buy a FWD Porsche or Lamb. for the same price or near the same price as a RWD or AWD one? I would hope not.

The only advantage to having a FWD eclipse is if you want the spyder.

Weight is an advantage, but I think the traction benefits of an awd outweigh the...weight...benefits, and this is coming from a fwd owner, I love my car but after seeing what fwd dsms did compared to awd ones I have to admit awd seems to be the better all around choice.

Paying extra is well worth it to get the piece of mind knowing your getting a good car and it has a lot of new parts, especially w/ how junk 2G's are to start w/. Retail value is $7k on a 95 GSX. $7k may not be worth it to a lot of you but to someone who wants a good reliable car whats better then something thar just got a new trans, warrantied 6 bolt, new clucth, new axles, new fuel pump, etc..

Now that these 2G's are getting some miles on them their true reliability is coming out. I have seen this way to many times and its just to bad..everyone in search of a DSM is looking for a "cheap" one. They go out buy a cheap one and get a POS thats in the shop weekly w/ all sorts of random problems and they end up having way more into this POS after the first few months than it would have cost to purchase a new one from the get go. I see this EVERY single week.

I dont know why you all say that the car has probably been abused because it has a 6 bolt and what not now. Last time i checked 7 bolts were junk and the DSM trans were junk as well, so how is it assumed ut was beat on? Senn 7 bolts crank walk w/ under 50k on them. We got a customer right noww/ under 60k on his car and his trans has already went out and the 7 bolt is crankwalking.

FYI, this is not my car im just stating the facts that i see on a weekly basis about buying a "cheap" car to save $$ then end up w/ way more into it in the long run repairing it.

Just keep this in mind. If you buy one for say $5k and thre trans goes out, you're looking @ over $1k to repair it plus you might as well add a clucth $300+. If the motor goes out your looking @ about $2500 to fix it, etc... And the downtime of your car.
