whats up guys i have a 91 gsx the tranny acts like its missing 2 and 4 and overdrive i beleive its a 5 speed automatic. i have been told by allot of people that it is the tcu the car only has 70,000 miles on it that why i would like to fix possibility problems before i change the tranny any ideas? would it be better to convert it to a manuel valve body .

Auto cars are 4 speeds my friend..OD is 4th..Does it feel sluggish from a stop like its starting out in 3rd gear..If so, replace your tcu, and you should be good to go..Or there is another option if you want to shift yourself.. RoadSurge.com

But you would still need a working tcu if you decide to turn the box off and drive it like an auto..

yes the car is starting out in 3 i know this because when i first got it it would go from first to 3 but know it just stays in third

Not if it works..Why buy a new one from the dealer who is going to charge you 200+ for a new one..When you can get a working one for under a hundred shipped..Hell you might even be able to get it for 50 shipped..

...either your system went into "limp" mode (which calls for tranny repair), or the two - six wire plugs that head to the tranny are in the wrong sockets since they are the same size. Follow the color codes from the plug to socket to make the matches.

It happened to me as well - tranny shop plugged the connections in the wrong sockets and I also had the 3rd gear startout from a stop. Ddn't take long for me to figure out what happened since I knew about color coding of wires with my electronics experience. Did the switch and all was good (but this was for a FWD, F4A22 automatic) ... and advice for future auto owners to check out.

70k miles aint too much for a Mitsu tranny since I've seen Mitsu trannies hit well over 200k with no problems, but these electronic controlled trannies can have their issues when they begin to show them...

good luck-DSM

i feel retarted for asking this but ive never owned a dsm what is the location on the tcu? is it behind the radio the bronze colored box?

Its the box behind the ecu..Yes behind the radio..Its easier to remove if you go in from the passenger side..Remove that carpet thing, its above that..Scratch that..Remove the carpet along the counsel, then the carpet that is horizontal..Its above that..

ok so the tcu wasnt the problem and i was talking to a mechanic and he said it could be possible that the plugs on the tranny could be switched around does anyone know where thier located i took the factory intake off and i only see one plug ...

which is what dsm190 said but i cant find the plugs?

Try pulling a code. It is in the vfaqs or you can look through my previous posts to find a link. I believe the plugs are on the trans.

Make sure you didn't cross the pulse generator plug with the shift solenoid plug. Just follow the wires where they come out of the transmission. The solenoid wires come out from in the front of the trans. Just above the edge of the pan through a rubber groment/seal. Orange and yellow wires, don't remember the other colors.

Looks like this:

Edit: This might do better if it was moved to the Auto Transmission section.

There should be one plug on the top of the tranny right behind the maf..

Pulled form my homade tranny shifter box tech thread..There should be a clip on the top of you transmission. There should be a blue wire, an orange wire, and a yellow with blue tracer.

You took it to a mechanic, and thats what you beleive..Id replace the tcu if you have had this problem for a long time..Like it just came up..But post 16 and 17 tell you where the plug is located and what wires should be coming out of it..If all the wires match up, then stop listening to a mechanic..

Did your car develop this problem while you owned it or did you buy this car with this problem ? Did you do a swap or rebuild and this problem started afterwards ?

Does the power/eco mode light on the cluster work? if it dosent you should check your tcu fuse. Mine was doing the same thing and that was the problem. If the tcu is bad or loses power the trans will go into limp mode.
