Grinding not brakes and not when jacked up.

95 gst I bought the car from an owner that didn't know much about it just said it had a 98 motor. The car had one axle in the back seat and the other one was in it so I purchased an axle from napa put it in spun the tires while it was jacked up and the driver side axle just slopped around in the trans the shaft was too skinny for the trans so I had to replace it too. When it was done I drive it but there is a loud grinding sound like metal on metal but its not like brake grinding. I jack the vehicle up off the ground I can put it in gear and run it through the gears with no grinding but once it's on the ground it grinds. I've tried to read all the post about the axles and splines on these but the only s/n on the trans I can find is f5m31 no other numbers. The motor has 4g63 with 1w6138 under it on the block by the turbo. While looking at it i see it has a new slave cyl ad i can look in the bottom if the bell housing and see a part of a new clutch assembly The car is lowered fmic, mbc, turbo timer, boost vac gauge, I'm at a loss the motor runs great

I had a similar problem and it drove me nuts. I ended up needing to replace all the U jointz. I actually just did a complete driveline rebuild new yoke, carrier bearings, u joints, and solid bushings. Then I also replaced the front wheel bearings. Well I just replaced the wheel hubs because they come with new bearings and it was cheaper and didnt have to press the old ones out.
Anyways this solved my issues.
Also a thought check your dust shields they could be pressed in just enough to touch when your car is on the ground and rubbing the rotor.

Sounds like it might be a wheel bearing. Does it get louder when you turn one way or the other when driving down the road? Like when you take corners.

I would say check hub bearings, brake dust shields, caliper brackets, tire rubbing upper control arm or spindle arm, if all is good. Then internals of trans might be at fault. Noises are always gonna come at strange times. If the tran is smooth and quiet when lifted. Doesn't meen it will when it's under a load. I had a similar problem made crazy noises when I drove and then it just stopped moving, turns out the axle wasn't completely popped into the trans. Looked good but it was like a millimeter out. Pull the nut off the axle placed a piece of wood on the end a whacked the crap out of it with a sledge and boom no more noise.

It was worse when I turned to the right or put a load on it. It seems to be a common thing that I should replace the hubs so I will order some and I guess check the axles when I do im worried that maybe I have the wrong axles for it since I just ordered them for the make model and year of the car and maybe the trans is different then what it came with I read on here that it sounded like my numbers on my trans wasnt the one that came on it.?

Anyone reading this read it again the issue was the wheel bearings when they were replaced and I actually drove it fixed the issue. Thanks again everyone..
