Brakes Grinding

My dad has a 95 gs eclipse and he has been hearing a grinding sound coming from the passanger side rear brake. one day when we got home we could feel the heat coming from the brake. Only the rear passanger brake does it. any idea what could cause this?

how about checking them brake pads. just because you don't see damage on the outside...doesn't mean the inner is not trash.

Raise the wheel. If you can turn the wheel while the brake pedal is slightly pressed, you probably have a stuck piston. Another possibility: 2g rear discs have brake shoes inside for the parking brake. These may be worn down to metal or need adjustment.

I don't have my manual with me but with a certain amount of torque you should be able to spin the rotor. It isn't much. If a lot of force is required, your piston may be sticking. And, as luv2rallye suggested, check the parking brake pads if you don't find anything obvious on the outside.

I just double checked and it's actually a little more complicated. First you must measure the turning resistance of the hub without the pads engaged with the disk. Then after applying the brakes a few times and rotating the disk 10x you measure the drag force and subtract the first measurement. Measurements are taken with a spring scale and a rope tied around one stud and wrapped 360° to a spring scale. Calculated drag force should be around 15 lbs.

Kind of a lot of work, huh?

we took it to the shop they said both rear brakes were sticking. so we got the parts and fixed it today. things are working great. thancks for all your help. i love this website.
