Hi,
My tranny grinds when I shift to 2nd. But its only when it's cold and not warmed up. After 5 minutes or so and i've shifted a couple times it's fine. Thats why I don't think it's a synch. Does anyone know what it could be?

Thanks

Yea, these trannys tend to have rough shifting when they are cold...hell, they are known for having rough shifting all the time, but particularly when cold. From what i understand this is normal. Mine doesn't grind when its cold, but it is a bit more difficult to shift.

Id be careful with that. When I bought my GST I only got 50 miles out of the tranny that was in it. It used to grind into third every time whether it was cold, warm, hot, whatever. Finnally it broke while I was shifting fast. It stayed in third. I think the shift fork broke but I just replaced the whole tranny.

haha i was just gonna tell him to get the gm kind or that kind, let me put it this way to u, my tranny shifted 80 percent better when i put this stuff in, everything was just so much smoother, or u could go purple or redline

Ive tried that stuff and I dont think its all that much better than the Valvoline equvilant. Infact, I just switched about a week and a half ago to Valvoline 75/90 full syn. and I acually get smoother shifts with that, than the Pennsoil. So that I say is a debate-able subject.

I have the exact same problem when it is very could out. my car will grind into second gear untill about 10-15 min when it is warmed up. I discovered double clutching it into second works well until the tranny is warmed up. no grinding! :talon:

yo whats up dsmowner, I have the SAME exact problem, it hard to shift at 2nd when its cole but after like 2 tries it goes away. I dont really know whats up, one of my friends told me its the synchro, he told me to get a new trasmission for like only 1000, i was like "fool only 1000? yea right. I hope that its nothing serious, what can I do about this?

Does anyone think it is a synch.? My buddy told me that it prolly wasnt if it only did it when it was cold. :dsm:

Of course it's the synchro. You're now paying for believing double-clutching downshifts are a waste of time. But if it's just when cold, it's not really anything "wrong", it's just a car that isn't new anymore.

Yes, there are better lubes for DSM gearboxes than Synchromesh. But not proportionally for the cost.

Your right Defiant, ( I know you like hearing that :p ) There are others that are just as good or better than Penns. for that same price range. I spent something like $9.55 per qt for the Valvoline that Im running right now and I have to say that although it isnt the greatest fluid, it seems to work better than the syncromesh that I had before. Personal prefrence I guess. :) Next time Im just gonna bite it and buy the Redline shock-proof stuff for racing trannys and see what kind of diffrence that will make. Hopefully I wont HAVE to do it. It'll just be one of those, AH, I feel like blowin some money today, kinda deals.

I have Synchromesh in my car and it still grinds in 2nd when its cold. My synchros are worn, the tranny is worn, it needs a new one. There isn't a cheap way around it. Oh well. Fix it or live with it till it finally goes.

A lot of people have been fans of the BG Synchroshift (I and II) for quite some time. I seem to remember several people saying that it's basically the same thing as GM Synchromesh but I couldn't tell you for certain. I do know that the Penzoil is the same thing as the GM fluid - GM just costs more $$$

Indeed. I have a feeling though that Defiant is hinting at something not quite as obvious as those popular 3 brands of synchromesh. I had Amsoil 75w-90 which was good but may have premoted the 2nd gear grinding issue i have now....

I've had no problems running a 50/50 mix of stock tranny fluid and Redline MT-90. Still grinds occasionally when it's cold but thats pretty normal for a trans with 130k on it.

Yea I have the same problems. Only it does it 2nd and 3rd all the time. Its the syncros. Does anyone know where you could buy just the syncros? So I can replace them.

I just tried switching to Mobil 1 Full synthetic for my 1G, anyone had any experience with that brand? I've been using the 10W-30 Full synthetic for my engine for a couple of years now. It seems to be a little better, but since my car's been in the shop for about a week now, I haven't been driving it much. (Crankshaft pulley, waiting for the part to be delivered)
