So I have the opporitunity to buy a Garrett gt2871r for a really good deal from sombody I know. I'm thinking about running it on my 2g gsx with 6 bolt. I already have a t3 manifold with 3 inch o2 housing, 40mm hks wastegate, tunable ecu etc etc. What to u guys think about this turbo?

the Garrett GT2871R is a small turbo...i belive its a 40 trim or sumthing...but i know its small it wouldnt be much of an uprgade....if u have plans of higher horspower in the future just save money for the Holset Hx35

it is a 40 something trim i know that......

Depends on which one it is....there are a couple different 2871R compressor wheels with different trim specs- one has a 49mm inducer (48-trim) and the other has a 53mm inducer (56-trim).

Then again, trim doesn't mean shit unless you're using it to describe a series of wheels which all have the same exducer size....like the T04E series. Look at the 16G wheels for example- HUGE difference in inducer and exducer wheel spec between the Small 16G and Big 16G, but they're both called a "16G".

Basically, you can't compare a 56-trim 2871R compressor to a 57-trim T04E compressor....they're a completely different spec wheel. The 56-trim 2871R wheel is a 53mm IN / 71mm EX while the T04E-57 wheel is a 56.5mm IN / 75mm EX.

Not necessarily....depending on which compressor wheel you get, it can actually make a decent amount of airflow. Here's the larger 56-trim map showing the turbo is every bit as capable as a 20G:

The hindering factor would be the GT28 turbine wheel. If you kick it up a notch to the GT30 turbine (GT3071R), you're now talking about using a turbine wheel that has logged over 60 lb/min with various compressors.

GT28 = 53.2mm IN / 41.8mm EX

TD05H = 56mm IN / 49mm EX

....so the TD05H is a bit larger in physical size, but like many of the GT turbines the GT28 turbine has a way of flowing a heap of air by design- hence the reason it's paired to a compressor capable of over 40lb/min in the largest 2871.
