Washington,
Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING

and of course a EBAY 16g and so far so good with 7280 i have it on my odometer and the CARS STRONG AS HELL Still

The car now has about 350 miles on the ebay turbo. After putting a new intake in the car yesterday- I checked for shaft play and it doesn't exist. The car runs strong but I do notice the following:

The turbo will only go to about 13psi and not any higher. I have tried adjusting the mbc which may be defective. I'm guessing I have a boost leak somewhere. I will take video today. I have DSMLink but am waiting to install my wideband so I have not tuned yet. The car is much quicker then it was before. This is especially noticeable after third gear.

Ok guys- I'm guessing this will become a big install thread. I also have the following to install that I will take pics of and keep updated here:

-SSAC FMIC (should answer questions for those who are trying to keep costs down by using the SSAC FMIC kit and the ebay turbo, a lower priced alternative)

-Ebay turbo timer, yes- the $20 shipped one, this ebay turbo will always be turbo timed :)
-Ebay walbro 190 and install kit
-I will also do a thread on installing 6x9's on a stock 2g setup- contrary to what little i've read here, the rear speakers on a 2g eclipse are not 6x9's.
-Hookup of a water temperature guage, and an oil pressure gauge.
-Wideband o2

I know they are unrelated but I will take pics of everything. I will continue the ebay turbo install on my own until laserspeeddemon has time to help me finalize. I will be fair and wait for him to be around during startup time. Since he has helped so much.

I will then drive the car a short while to make sure all is well. I have an apexi neo for now which i will add 550 or 560 injectors to. I will detail that in a thread as well. Then DSM Link will be introduced followed by street tuning, then in the future dyno tuning.

I'm going this route because this is the route I would think people on a budget would follow. I can just bolt on my genuine big 16g, use an expensive install kit, a race intercooler, DSM Link and dyno tuning right away, and install a HG, cams, studs, etc. and get it over with. But I will go the route of someone on a budget. I hope this makes logical sense.

A bit off topic, but another cheap alternative is just getting an EVO 8/9 fuel pump. You can get them cheap from EVO owners, just don't make them realize its a great upgrade for DSMs or they will mark them up.

Also the rears ARE 6x9s, if you have a Talon or eclipse WITHOUT the infinity sound option then they are not 6x9s, but 6x9 mount with the mount adapter for 6.5s. I actually prefer the round speakers, so nice if you have that.

Now back on topic, great thread, been reading it and might soon contribute. We might be purchasing one, and this thread will help greatly.

Also curious when you spool up? Another car I work on his this EBAY EVO III GT, and the spool up seems slow. It was the same one turbochargers.com sells or use to sell. There is a thread about it, and even the OP there said his spool was quite slow. I personally don't like it, I have experience with a real MHI big16g and the spool was quick. There were some posts that lead me to believe not all the ebay 16gs are the same.

I just drove the car almost 2k miles up and down mountains. NO PROBLEMS. Played with some z06's and evo's and a few others on the way. Car is still running pig rich since I will tune this weekend. No shaft play after checking today.

Wow great thread guy's :thumb: I am fairly new to the turbo world. I've been modifing the 420a for several years now. I will say that this is not only a great install and research thread, but it is also a great way for a newbie as myself to learn about turbos. I will deffinatley keep a close eye on this thread and I can't wait to see the results.

I have also heard that turbochargers.com evoIII turbos does spool like 200 rpms later or soo.
Although on their website say is a MHI and correct Mitsu part number.
Pretty confusing.

About only boosting to 13psi, I think you set the wastegate too soft, try to tighten it 2 or 3 turns and see if the pressure rises. On the video you posted it seems that the flapper arm has a bit of free play.

If you take the waste arm out of the flaper the hole and the pin shouldn't match, the hole should be like 2-3mm towards the waste actuator.

I will take a video as soon as I get a chance. The car now has about 3k with the ebay turbo on it. I have it at 12psi for now since I don't want to tune until I fix the heat issue. I am getting temps of 210 after hard runs because of the fmic. I will create ducting this weekend and install the new headlights. I took the car about 2k miles on mountain roads and had no problem. My cheapo gatorade bottle overflow tank fell out and I had to buy a propel and use that. I now have an aluminum overflow tank installed. I have a boost leak at my jpipe but the car spools strong and yesterday when installing the overflow tank I took the intake out. There is 0 shaft play, I couldn't budge it.

I get spool at around 2k rpms and it dies off at around 6.2k rpms. I raced an ss camaro about 1/4 mile from a stoplight to stoplight and stomped him (i still have stock clutch). On the highway he caught me around 85 and I let off since he was going to pass me.

I will tune as soon as I get this stuff straight this week.

Hey sean!

How are you bro? The boost leak test will be redone today. I haven't ever been able to get that thing to hold pressure while doing a test and I will hopefully get to the bottom of it today while i install shrouding for the ic, a new o2 sensor, and the new headlights.

thanks
meek

ok so now for the BIG question. As of right now I am having to buy a new turbo, obviously I don't want to buy a stock turbo. I don't have the money for a real big 16g with all the install stuff. SO as of right now would you suggest this ebay big 16g?

I am looking at this. eBay Motors: EVO 3 BIG 16G Turbo DSM ECLIPSE 1G 2g w. install kit (item 380007777756 end time Mar-24-08 13:36:58 PDT) looks like the only other thing I will need is a J pipe so I can use my FMIC. Look good?

EDIT: Will I need to get my 02 housing ported while I have it off? What about my mani, It doesn't come with one should I buy one?

EDIT: Or this is probably even better eBay Motors: Bolt OnTurbo Kit For DSM TD05H Big 16G Evo 3 GT (item 370034179718 end time Mar-23-08 20:55:33 PDT) Would you suggest this considering where your at right now?

I can't vouch for the entire kit w/manifold and other things. I can only vouch for the turbo. I got mine from craigslist but it is obviously an ebay turbo. You will need a jpipe and I would encourage you to get the o2 housing and manifold ported. Also make sure you get the correct size new bolts and a front mount jpipe. Make sure the wastegate is properly adjusted as well.

Thank you! Ok I will just get the whole system, you think I will need to have the aftermarket 02 housing and mani bored? It should come big enough. Do you know by chance what size bolts I need I might as well just order those at the same time...or where to get them? Thanks again its appriciated and update as this bad boy keeps going!

Housing and manifolds are "bored" to increase flow. If everything matches up, then it is large enough I guess.

No idea where you will find the bolts really. If you are buying the whole kit from a vendore on ebay then why dont you see if they can supply the bolts.

Good luck though. Some of those ebay manifolds are really crappy, and have a tendency to crack if they are not braced properly.

read previous posts...the bolts they send with them are the wrong threads.
And if it cracks it cracks I guess, I think it will be fine, as said above companys have to start somewhere and everyone bad talks them, but really not many people have had bad luck...in fact about as many people who have had bad luck with the real ones on this board if you search....so I also kinda want to do it not just for money, but also to see for myself and maybe prove to others as thewraith is doing

well then sounds like you know what you want and need. I have used a few manifolds on honda's, but I had them braced. You can get lucky with ebay stuff, but dont think its all ready to install as is.
