Funny situation, I have a real EVO3 turbo and an Ebay 16g turbo..

Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING
 
Ok, the leak has been fixed. There is a minor leak at the jpipe which I will replace and at the biss screw which may be normal. I will do a writeup this week and hopefully satisfy dan :) The car runs strong- not as much power on the low end but midrange there is much more power till i run out of fuel at about 14psi. I have dsmlink and wideband on the way and am looking for injectors.

I have been looking around for a while on ebay now and i have come to realize that i cannot find an eBay EVO III 16g turbo. Now, hear me out. I have found many turbos on eBay that have EVO III in the title, but when you read the description they all claim to be big 16g turbos, not EVO III 16g turbos.

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this, because i cant find ANY EVO III 16g turbos on ebay, MHI or not.

If there is somone that wants to prove me wrong, please post a link to one claiming to be a EVO III 16g turbo, and i will shut up and crawl back into my cave.

Could it be that maybe we are compairing two big 16g turbos?

Ok, here is what I have so far and it's not the turbo that is the problem. It's the piping from the SSAC kit and me not being able to set the t-clamps up well enough for them to stop the leaks. The car boosts BEAUTIFULLY when everything is nice and TIGHT. At 12 psi I have much more power then I ever had with the t-25 in the car. However- I keep getting little stupid boost leaks or pipes blowing off. I admit that I haven't really had time to get into it enough to fix the issue. I will try again this weekend. I work for the government and constantly get sent out to work out of state and country. My apologies to everyone who is waiting on a writeup.

Awesome thread...I have a 1Ga that I just finished rebuilding...until the tranny broke...ugh...But I used to have an Evo with an upgraded FMIC and piping...Did you try the hairspray trick to get the couplers to stick a little more? If not, it can really help...Good luck with the project, and I cant wait to see more positive info!
 
Have not tried hairspray trick yet- but have long couplers coming in. I started a tech thread but posted in wrong section. Waiting on mods to move it.
 
i wonder if your ebay turbo will come apart like mine(20g)

That works...I had to use it on my evo couplers and also I had a CAI on my tiburon and the couplers didn't want to hold onto either side of the MAF...The longer couplers should work great...G/L and keep us posted!
 
ive had an evo 3 ebay turbo on for about 4k miles and i havent really had any problems..LOL it spools good i think i got lucky but im waiting for it to blow LOL
 
A big write-up was in the works, I was personally helping out with this project until I came home one day to find a package that said "Hey, remember us? We're the army. Please, why don't you join us in Afghanistan!" So my life came to a schreeching halt and I have being busy every since, I leave tomorrow to VA Beach to spend time with my family and then off to Army back I go.
 
I will take a vid as soon as DSMLink goes on and the new couplers come in. As for my work with the government- I work a civilian job :)
 
I have started a write up at the location below, I tried to make it a tech post but screwed up the location (yes i admitted it) and asked a mod to move it. Some of the mods here would rather take things personally and belittle somebody then actually try to help out. i must say this turned into one awesome thread!!!! id personally like to see some dyno numbers when u get around to it and what rpm your hitting full boost at. thankx again to you and your army buddy for taking the time to not only doing the testing but the write up on it
 
A+ from me also guys for taking the time to do this. I to also have an ebay EVOIII 16g made my power xs 5,000 miles and no problems.
 
If i dont want to adjust the auctuator i can use my orginal auctuator from the mitsubishi evo 3 big 16g turbo and fit the ebay 16g turbo:confused:
 
And you base this thought on what?? The small handful of people out of tens of thousands that have already been using them for years with no complaints??
 
i base the thought on me actually owning one. it lasted a couple of months. i am really hard on cars and maybe thats why it didnt last. but when you have bad luck with something you just dont like it i quess.
 
Heres the thing. Any car that you are "hard on" needs extra care when it comes to maintance. Otherwise things break faster. If the part is a 2nd rate part that only adds to the complication. We will see what happens in the soon enough.... At least I will see in 1 year.
