Washington,
Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING

I have read that, but you have your main post as a comparison with an EVO3 16G not the big 16G. They are two totaly differant turbos. I guess we are not on the same page here. Good luck with the Ebay turbo let us know what you find out about it.

I don't think that comment was directed at you, more so they guy claiming he'd rather buy a real one for a few hundred dollars more.

As for you other comment the EVO 1-2 (Big 16g) and EVO 3 turbos flow pretty close to each other. Alot of vendors compare them by HP, I compare turbos by flow and compressor maps. I keep on getting conflicting data on the flow of the Big 16g vs the EVO III 16g. Extreme PSI, one of my favorite vendors has the BIG 16g rated 550 cfm. Most vendors agree on that. But Extreme PSI rates the EVO III 16g at 550 cfm with some vendors putting the number as high as 565 cfm.

Other added benefits is the turbine housing is lighter and controls creep better, but you can't machine it to bastardize a 20g into it.

Anyway, two totally different turbos is way off. It's more like twins with one having an extra mole on his back.

**Edit** forgot to link my source.

MHI TD05H Big 16g
MHI TD05H EVO III 16g

Have you hand in hand compared the two. The EVO 3 will out flow the big 16G straight out of the box. Even after porting out the exhaust housing I believe the EVO 3 has a slight advantage. I believe the compressor outlet on the EVO 3 is bigger also. Its been a couple of years since I did the comparison but I just installed the Big 16G on my wifes car and was shocked how much porting I had to do to the waste gate area and the exhaust inlet compared to the EVO 3 16G. Even on a turbo that small could amount up to 20-60 HP. Slowboy did dyno test with the EVO 3 and got great Hp numbers over the other turbos. Its surprising how they managed to get over 400 Hp at the wheels. Extreme PSI only rates the EVO3 16G 5HP over the Big 16G. I think there is a greater margin then that.

Regardless of the flow numbers and whatnot- I'm not out to prove that the ebay turbo is better then the mitsubishi turbo or the big 16g turbo, etc. I'm out to prove reliability. The Big 16g and the EVO3 are similar turbo's with similar flow numbers. They are also both just as reliable as the other. The point of this is to show the ebay turbo will be as reliable and provide much more bang for the buck. Why are you picking at a point that is nil? I already said I was incorrect in thinking it was an EVO 3. My mistake is trusting sellers from dsmsource- this seller claimed it was an evo3 and it had 400 miles on it. I didn't even look at it closely enough till today to see otherwise. It's not an EVO3 and it obviously has way more then 400 miles on it. I will post his name and a negative rep if he doesn't respond to my email about the bent blades on the turbo.

Im not trying to be rude in any way I just don't want people to get the wrong impression when they open this page thinking that there is going to be some sort of comparison between the MHI EVO3 16G and the knock off Ebay 16G. do you see where Im comming from. I do understand that you are doing this for relablity reasons. Trust me I want to see where this goes, it sure will save use DSMers money on upgrades.:thumb:

I am also very sorry bout you getting screwed I hope you get that worked out.

That's cool, I wasn't implying you were being rude. Your point is a good one. The turbo may be fine- just laserspeeddemon pointed out the other day when we were taking pics of the inner diameters of the turbo's that a few of the fins may be bent. That indicates something was sucked in and also indicates a possible balance issue. And yes- it's more of a reliability and "introduction to the ebay turbo" thread then anything else. By two people who know the ins and outs of mechanics and vehicle modifications.

Dude, you should just stop now, because you are posting facts that don't relate to the other. The flow numbers and maps I posted are compressor maps and measure flow of just that; THE COMPRESSOR. So why are you arguing the flow ratings with facts of the turbine? The difference in the wheels are more apparent with the small 16g and the Big 16g then with the Big 16g and the EVO III 16g.

Here is a small 16g vs Big 16g.

That is a visual difference. Now read this (Link).
How come Japan always gets the good stuff? While we got stuck with turbos like the 14B and the T25, THEY got the Evo 16G. Compared with a so-called "big" 16G, it has an even larger compressor wheel inducer (.01" bigger), a LIGHTER compressor wheel (due to thinner blades), and a turbine housing that's been put on a serious diet -- it's 2.6 POUNDS lighter! The wastegate spring is a little stiffer, too. What's not to like? Plus, the price is affordable.

We recommend porting for highest power output, and a larger wastegate flapper to help reduce boost creep. See below.

You couldn't even tell the difference between 0.01" with the human eye. So that is why the COMPRESSOR MAP FLOW NUMBERS are remarkably similar.

Now moving on to turbine. You are right, the EVO III is slightly bigger and had an improved design, but I already stated this a few posts ago. Turbine design alters spool characteristics as well as how it maintains boost through the power band.

Ok I have a quick question...is the install kit from slowboy just as good as the one from ebay?

One more question. In another post there was talk the ebay turbo has brass bearings where the MHI units have bronze units. Have you found any proof one way or the other and if so what are your feelings?

I love this post KEEP IT GOING!!:thumb::thumb:

I hate to upset anybody but I am really sick of some of this s***. Every time some one does a write up on an ebay turbo somebody comes and always finds something stupid to say that just makes the thread longer. Now my suggestion is this, Laserspeeddemon make them a sub thread for stupid questions that have nothing to do with the ebay turbo and its progression, therefore if they have something to say it doesn't clog up this one with unneccesary s***. We are not stupid, if he doesn't have an MHI evo 3 so what, we know how they work already check the SEARCH there are millions of threads about it read those. Can we leave this thread to laserspeeddemon, wraith and anyone who has a question on the turbo's being used and there progression please, I really want to know everything about this turbo and what I need to do to make it better as well as how long it will last and what kind of punishment it can take, not forgetting where and how to port it e.t.c. I don't want to know why it's color is not as dark as the MHI or whether the MHI is EVO or big, how much better the MHI is, please if you have stupidity on your mind F*** off.

P.S don't forget to make that sub thread laser.

Ok guys- I'm guessing this will become a big install thread. I also have the following to install that I will take pics of and keep updated here:

-SSAC FMIC (should answer questions for those who are trying to keep costs down by using the SSAC FMIC kit and the ebay turbo, a lower priced alternative)

-Ebay turbo timer, yes- the $20 shipped one, this ebay turbo will always be turbo timed :)
-Ebay walbro 190 and install kit
-I will also do a thread on installing 6x9's on a stock 2g setup- contrary to what little i've read here, the rear speakers on a 2g eclipse are not 6x9's.
-Hookup of a water temperature guage, and an oil pressure gauge.
-Wideband o2

I know they are unrelated but I will take pics of everything. I will continue the ebay turbo install on my own until laserspeeddemon has time to help me finalize. I will be fair and wait for him to be around during startup time. Since he has helped so much.

I will then drive the car a short while to make sure all is well. I have an apexi neo for now which i will add 550 or 560 injectors to. I will detail that in a thread as well. Then DSM Link will be introduced followed by street tuning, then in the future dyno tuning.

I'm going this route because this is the route I would think people on a budget would follow. I can just bolt on my genuine big 16g, use an expensive install kit, a race intercooler, DSM Link and dyno tuning right away, and install a HG, cams, studs, etc. and get it over with. But I will go the route of someone on a budget. I hope this makes logical sense.

It's the same f'n thing. With a few additional parts that are overkill. Note that we have mixed two install kits here. The install kit that came with the ebay turbo and an ebay jpipe kit. I have 2 ebay j pipe kits for sale now since I can not use the j pipes as i'm going with FMIC.

We were able to reuse the old waterlines- they were bent. We will use the oil return line that came with the ebay turbo, and we have used the oil feed line that came with the ebay j pipe kit.

All directions will be included in the final writeup. Step by step.

i will take a picture of the stocks and what i had to do to get 6x9's to fit. Perhaps it's the year/model of my car that is different. Laserspeed saw it as well and was surprised.

ok so reading through this post and still have not really answered the question.... IS THE EBAY 16G WORTH THE MONEY AND CAN IT HANG WITH THE MITSU 16G OR NOT...

Also I Have Noticed That The Ebay 16g Turbo's Say That They Are A Tdo5"d"... As Opposed To The Tdo5"h"... Whats The Difference...

We are installing everything. We have ALOT to do and we keep finding that we are missing various things like a j-pipe for the FMIC kit and the NPT fitting for the oil pressure gauge. Also because I can only come by for maybe 1 day a week for a few hours this is taking a VERY long time.
Also I Have Noticed That The Ebay 16g Turbo's Say That They Are A Tdo5"d"... As Opposed To The Tdo5"h"... Whats The Difference...

The one we have does not have TD05D stamped anywhere on it, so I don't know what that means.

TD05D is not a MHI part number, so it probably means nothing.

My apologies for the delays guys and gals. We are trying to finish this thing up, it's just that we have to piece together many parts and little things like laserspeed mentioned above. I have many new pics that I will upload detailing a few new install points. Note that we are installing and taking pictures of a great number of things here so it will naturally take longer. Unfortunately I have not been so motivated and have only been working when laserspeed is over. I will get to work on this tomorrow, thanksgiving, and Friday to finish it and take many more pictures. I will NOT start it up w/out laserspeed here as he has helped with much of it. I will detail the following installs as well since I haven't seen anything decent w/pics for 2g installs of the following:

-Electrical oil pressure gauge install.
-Electrical water temperature gauge install
-Fuel pump rewire and install
-SSAC FMIC install on a 2ga
-Turbo timer wiring without harness onto 2g
-And a ton of things I can't think of right now.
-Rear 6x9 install
-Rear diff and transaxle fluid changes
-Symbroski kit and shift boot install (hehe)

more pics- updated to reflect electrical oil pressure install, and ssac fmic mounting install. Along with pictures of what to cut- where to cut and how to cut. :)

note one thing I didn't take a picture of. When mounting the ssac fmic- i had to cut the top tab about 2 inches shorter to make it all fit.
