Funny situation, I have a real EVO3 turbo and an Ebay 16g turbo..

Washington,
Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING

That would be great if the companies that sell these turbos could throw you some sponsor money or something. I am sure it would be a great marketing and advertising thing for them. Who knows, we might have another "lets talk Ebay FMIC kits" going on here??

And again, I say do the ebay turbo first, keep us updated and such. And then when and if it s*@ts the bed, just do the MHI. How much boost are you planning on running? The MHI Evo 3 16g does 20-22psi all day and yes, there are horror stories even about that.

No...not on my dime LOL. I'll treat it like I would treat any other turbo- not try to kill it on purpose. That wouldnt be a fair test.

Maybe we should start a paypal donation fund for you, that way we can each give a buck or two for your troubles and further testing.

I went the ebay route and its worked good for a thousand miles now. No shaft play. Seems like a good solid turbo good spool up. Came missing one gasket and the ss oil line broke. They were easy fixes but irritating as well:mad:

Was the missing gasket for the oil return line? I'm using an oil line to oil filter location on our setup- the ss line doesn't look too hot.

been running a ebay evo 16g from ssac for 14,000 miles now only @ 16-18 psi bought it for 312 with install kit. works fine still. best time I have got is a 14.7 but that is with a spyder fwd with a stock clutch, throttle body, and fuel system.

Thought you might wanna see this.

Your install kit will be going out tuesday.(our ups got robbed at gunpoint so it was closed for investigation)

Did you realize that the video posted in that thread was posted by the same person in this thread?

Im assuming on that last page that the ebay turbo was the one with the teenie little diverter port under that big huge flapper.

Correct that is the ebay. We should port it, but considering that he is running a 2.5" DP, it probably will not creep.

None of those pics look like the EVO 3 turbo that I had on my car. The Exhaust housing on mine looked like the one you got from Ebay. Other EVO3 turbo owners chime in. To me it looks like you have The stock 2G turbo the Ebay 16G and a big 16. Did they change the housings on the MHI to look like the ones on a standard 16G. And I'm talking about the part of the housing that bolts up to the turbo manifold.

Yes, you are correct. I would recommend porting that out. Everything else on the ebay turbo (portwise) is superior. Laserspeeddemon can explain that better then I, he's the expert with this whole thing. I have a lot of engine and turbo experience but i have NEVER worked with or on a DSM.

The exhaust housing side on my 16g has "fp" (forced performance) stamped on it. Perhaps it's different?

Here are some cools things to note.

Myth: Turbo spool is slow for a 16g.
Analysis: Confirmed. Visually I could tell the turbine housing was bigger on the ebay turbo. So we took some measurements. First I measured the exterior of the MHI turbo:

It measured approx. 3.4cm Next we measured the Ebay 16g at about the same position:

This measured 4.0 cm. That's about 15% difference externally.

So I moved my attention to the turbo inlet, not much of a difference here less then 1 mm difference.

Now here's where it makes a difference; this MHI turbo we have is ported so it's actually BIGGER then it comes from the factory. Look at the difference in the exhaust passage internally on these two turbos.

There is so much more room inside this turbo. Look the area circled in green.

It is cast ported COMPLETELY out of the Ebay turbo. This gives the Ebay turbo ALOT more breathing room. So while spool up is affected, top end efficiency is increased. However, whether or not the compressor side is properly sized to support the larger top end remains to be seen. We don't have the equipment necessary to test it off the car, so we will measure intake charge temps and flow characters on the car and compare them later on.

I just checked FP's site and even there MHI EVO 3 turbo looks more like the one you got off of Ebay:

BIG 16G

To me it looks like you have a ported out Big 16g.
Is there a way that you can measure the inducer and exducer of both compressor wheels?

Hi,

You are correct-it's a ported big16g according to the numbers on it.

I would'nt want you to compare the wrong turbos.

Keep up the comparison though it would be nice to see how the cheaper Ebay turbo can hold up to the all mighty 16G. :dsm:
