The paint project started in October 2012 between my oldest brother Angel Jr and I. He has 20+ years experience in the auto body field and has built over a dozen low riders and painted anything from low rider bikes to stock Hybrids. He's done it all and continues to do so from his home. The original thread which documented this journey is here-

Some history on the current shell.

The car was completely assembled by March, 2013.

It was an undercover project that not many people knew about locally, and the color will still remain under wraps (especially since it was screwed up by the paint shop anyways ROFL)

I know nothing about body and paint other than my Matte Green that seems to be popping up everywhere. So I decided to take my brother up on his nagging offer of painting my car the right way.

My brother was talking about tape lines, and preparing the proper way to spray it. Since the top was going to remain black (House of Kolor Jet black), we had to get a little creative. So we decided to spray the car in 3 main sections. The moldings, bumpers, trim, hatch, etc., we sprayed separately.

So the masking began.

Once that dried, my brother lightly "nibbed" the top to remove the inherent dirt that comes with a garage paint job. Then the High Solids clear was shot.

Once we aired out the garage, the heater went on. We let it bake (this was during a cold California winter reachine 30*) for a few hours and left the insulated garage alone till the next day. Unmasked there she stood with her dark soul shining on top.

My brother was not available due to having another high paying project taking his time, so a good friend experienced in the field donated 2 days of his time. He went over it lightly and got rid of all the surface dirt and this is the last polish the car saw. There is still TONS of material left for a second wetsand and buff, which will be done here soon.

My brother showed up to check up on my buddy Tony. I trust Tony 110% but my brother was concerned since he hasnt seen what Tony can do. In the end Tony earned his confidence from my brother, but I dont blame him for being worried. One screw up on the detailing and out the window goes all our hard work.

After two long days of work, Tony did a great job on the detailing. I cannot thank him enough for his hard work. On top of that, the hard work that my brother Angel did. Did I mention this was all done out of the garage? Show quality work out of a garage? Never heard of it.....

Then comes the fun part. My buddy Robert De Luna who has taken many pictures of my car volunteered for the photo shoot.

Being the ballsy mofo that I am, I decided to drive the car out to the shoot loction, 20 minutes away. On top of that, we got stuck in traffic for 45 minutes on the way back.

Here is a link to the photoshoot that day.

Since the paint job, the car has made it into GearBox Magazine and the full story is in this issue.

ISSUU - Gearbox Magazine 1.03 by GBXM|united

On top of the coverage from GearBox magazine, my understanding of body work and paint has grown. Not only that, but the appreciation for color care has elevated.

There are many draw backs to a paint job of this caliber. Working on the car has become a HUGE challenge. I can't toss tools around or lean on the car like I used to. Even with all my built in padding, I still run the risk of putting a slight dent or wave in the sheet metal. Not many people understand this, so think twice next time you lean on your car or someone elses.

All I have to say is WOW! That is some amazing work! You are very lucky to have a brother like that!

Thanks man. I never got along with my brother until now. Seems that all we needed was to work on a project together so we could understand each other like friends, instead of family (oldest brother and youngest brother).

Excellent write up on some beautiful work!! Love that its somewhat understated but with details that would knock you off your feet if you take time to notice!!

Amazing work from your brother and friend. You take care of that car as if it were a child 'ya hear'.

Any idea how many hours your brother spent on it? I sanded my 2G down, but not to bare metal, and I could only do a panel at a time because its a lot of work. Granted he did a much better job, given his experience, wondering how long he took to do it the "right" way. I want to redo mine the way he did your's, as far as steps are concerned.

It still took me almost 2 hours to post it up with cliff notes :D

Sir, yes sir!

No idea. We worked on it from 9-3 some days, and others 10-8pm. Mainly Monday through Friday, but we did work a weekend or two. Any body shop around here would charge 10-15K for something like this.

Love it! Awesome thread and amazing dedication right there.

Been in it for over 13 years and this hobby has loosened up a couple of screws thats for sure. :ohdamn: But I ain't going nowhere.

I did the same thing to my 2g but probably not as good of a job as you did but I can definitely appreciate the hard work that goes into getting a car ready for paint. It's not easy by any means.

With that said, the hard work paid off. Your car looks amazing. I love the color too. It's also nice to see someone dedicate some much time to these cars as they seem to be getting scrapped on a daily basis.

I'm so irritated that I can't stop looking at pictures of this car!!! I don't like the color. I hate the wheels and I think the hole in the hood looks wierd with a rectangle hole cut in it, but the execution is just so well thought out that I freakin love it for some stupid reason!! I'm sure it helps that its so damn fast too!

That pretty much describes a lot of peoples feelings about me :)

Everyone just seems to love me regardless of what I say or how I look. Maybe its my actions that speak louder than my words :thumb:

Thanks though man, glad you like the whole package. :D

I'm not a fan of high metallics (I hate painting them) but the car looks good and looks like your bro takes pride in his work. Take car of that beauty. No one ever realizes how much work goes in to a complete paint job. It drives me nuts when plp complain about prices when they want me to paint there car. They always think I should be able to do it in a days time. Anyways. I love it be proud and piss off the haters.

Metallics, candy's, and pearls are also on my brothers least favorite thing to paint. This car has ZERO blotches, and it is all laid out perfectly even with the low lighting in the garage.

There are a couple of flaws, but overall the craftsmanship is well....the pictures above say it all.

Hey I am frankly upset where is the spoiler so I can get my dirty pants on this just made me cream myself....I was in class too sadly.

Amazing paint job looks flawless.
Well, I will make sure to have extra shop towels for when you see it in person.

I had the car out at Blox Racing this Saturday. Had to pop the hood because the Skyline was getting all the attention!

BTW, the engine bay is next. I didn't want the car to be down and out of the game for too long. But the engine bay will be very unique and it will have more of my personality in it.

This reminds me of my civic.. Oh god. I can say first hand that jobs like these need plenty of dedication & most importantly time.

Looks amazing :)
Not painting the hood?

My brother is painting an OEM hood and a stock (clean and uncut) front bumper. We have half a gallon of base coat left, all I need to do is get my hands on some more of the exact same clear as we used up all of it on what you see pictured :shhh:
