Hello all, been on these forums a long time but have lost my previous log in info (RT-AWD) so starting fresh.

I recently purchased an HX-40 freshly rebuilt and put the BEP .55 A/R hotside on it with the intentions of making 450+whp.
I took it to get dyno tuned, ran into a bunch of issues and $2300 later im on speed density, and learned that on pump, this setup is only good for 410whp at 30 psi before knocking.
So here i am, brand new ported FP exhaust manifold, new HX-40 and i need to switch it up.
My options, as the title lets on, are:
FP Red external WG off the o2, bolt it on and done $1350

Go T3 with my HX-40:
New manifold -$1100
New housing- $400
Find someone to fab a vband o2 housing, a new dump tube as well - $???.??
Bolt my old ported Bullseye 50trim on -free

This is a street car with kelford 272s, eagle/ross built 2.0 motor, built trans, etc. 1200cc injectors, hard wired 255 Fuel Pump
Goal is low 11s, high 10s and 450+whp.
What would the community recommend?
I have no interest in messing with meth nor do i live near any e85

Appreciate it. Its sounding like the fp red is the easiest route and a nice step up from my 50-trim.

Anyone with an FP Red and kelfords that can comment of spool time? I see like 4500 for full boost?

Why not an hx 35?
Pretty sure you can hit full boost by 4500 on a bep housing 🤷🏼‍♂️
 
I have a lot of years of experience using hx turbos. A hx35 in bolt on housing will see 30 psi by mid 4,000rpm. I have ran some 20g's in the past 1 frank lvl 3 turbo, it spool almost exactly the same as hx35 in .55 housing and flowed less. When on pump gas any tight exhaust housing becomes a limiting factor. Last 7 blade hx35 in .55 housing i tuned on stock motor with hks 272's did 449whp at 27psi. This was on e85 it would never have gotten that on pump gas. Far to knock happy..

Yeah, i think im going to go FP red since its an easier swap and more affordable. I dont live within 15 miles of any gas station that sells e85. I also dont want to be googling e85 stations when im out of town with the car and risk not being near any when i need gas.
Just seems like more of a headache
 
Simple solution seems to be methanol injection and/or a better intercooler if you're planning to stay on pump gas. You have to keep the air charge cool when running a turbine housing that's less than half the size the turbo was intended to be used with...otherwise you're looking at dropping a bunch of money to potentially gain 0 to 30 horsepower with a Red in place of what you have now.

If you're going to spend money to gain power you may as well do it right and go T3/V-band with the HX40 as a T3 HX40 is going to have more power potential on pump gas. This also opens the door to MANY more turbo choices if you decide later that you want something smaller/bigger/newer, whatever...you're not just limited to whatever three turbos one company adapts to our platform.

We ran a T3 Bullseye .70 on an ERL manifold on a friend's 1GB a few summers ago and were seeing 57-58 lb/min at around 33-35psi on pump gas; timing was VERY low. Car had some major weight reduction and was an absolute riot then got even more-interesting on E85.
 
I think to many forget when on pump gas exhaust housing become a major factor. T3 hx40 is a great option. I currently am using a t3 hx40 in .82 housing with 62mm compressor wheel. I lost some spool in trade for potential air flow. I see 30psi by 5,100rpm and at 29psi have logged 57lb/min. I have not had the car above 37psi on this turbo to see if my lost spool was worth it yet vs a regular hx40.

Do you have any suggestions where to get a vband o2 housing? I cant see to find a company maki g them which, i would think if t3 is so popular, theyd be available. Im also running the large punishment racing intercooler from like 14 years ago. They told me i could use that intercooler up to 600hp.
Ill gladly go .70a/r t3 if i can find a vband o2 and dont have to tow the car anywhere to get one fabbed
 
Tim's currently has them available in .82 a/r; if this doesn't suit your needs the only other option is to snag a Precision housing (for a 62mm or smaller turbine) and have it machined to fit the HX40.

Its whatever their very first intercooler option was. Probably the street core. I really dont want to dive into a new intercooler setup. Ill change to T3 though. I dont want to spend too much more on this car, loosing interest as i get older and able to afford new vehicles that come with 600+ hp and have AC LOL.
I got a .70ar turbine housing source, i just need a manifold and an o2 housing.
 
From my experience with the FP Red, 4500 is about where is just starts making power(with GSC S2 cams in my car), I honestly don't see it making any more power on pump gas alone than the HX40.

I'd do as Justin mentioned earlier, add meth injection to the mix, done correctly its very safe and very effective.
