Currently, my talon has a knock off 16g that has been progressively failing for the last 2 years. I don't drive on the highway since the car will get up to 70mph and then hesitate to go faster, but bog a little once pushed past that speed. I'm pretty sure the turbo is the root problem. I have an FP HTA68 that I was planning to put on a new engine I've been building, but it looks to be that I may need to throw it on the talon now so I can drive on the highway in the near future, 75mph limit. If I chose to put it on, would the engine and turbo be safe with the stock tune and internals? I would get a boost controller if needed to keep the psi st the OEM level if needed as this wouldn't need to be anything more than my DD. I know it seems to be a waste of an awesome turbo, but if I need to do it, I'll have to. Engine is all stock minus the Ebay turbo. No upgraded fuel system, or anything else really. I do have a wideband I could install as well to at least monitor things. I would also get an oil sample done before install to ensure the engine is healthy.

I don't see this working well. Even if the 68 is kept at factory boost levels, it will outflow the factory turbo the tune is meant to be run on. Probably by a lot. Meaning you'll still run the injectors to the limit or past it. Also, it may run the MAF up into frequency zones the tune isn't calibrated for. I would get a way to monitor and tune the engine at bare minimumk (wideband and ECMlink). Or, find a used factory turbo or used 14b, which should be close enough to stock airflow on stock boost pressure.

Someone else with more experience can confirm, but as long as you keep it stock boost settings (7-10psi) and are able to monitor (which you say you can and will) I don't see a problem with installing it and running it, to daily it. I'd keep it super low just to be on the safe side, seeing as how when things are running good most people like to push it. Next step recommended would be to get link (if you don't already have it) and a proper tune.

I plan to get Link, but that was supposed to be for the new setup I'm building while keeping this a DD, but that was also the original plan for the turbo too. Maybe I'll look around for a different turbo so I'm not using this one yet.

I wouldn't worry about it one bit. It won't hurt anything and at worst maybe your a/f ration will be a little weird in some areas. I Would not hesitate to do it if you don't want to get another turbo.

You can do that, just expect a bit of lag and possibly fuel cut at high rpm, more so when its cold outside,

I have a hybrid 16G im using now at 12psi and its fine for the most part but when i get around 6k revs it can hit fuelcut, i have not got around to installing the ecu to manage my new parts to install yet so i had to play it safe and use it on the stock stuff for now,

When i say hybrid im using a 7x7 ET billet wheel, 9 blade turbine wheel so its built for max flow so if its ok for now then your 68 should be safe if you keep boost in check and make sure you monitor the WB

Thanks all for the feedback. If I do this, I know I can keep the boost down. I like to play, but if I know the engine is at risk, I tend to play it safe.

My only worry is damage to the 68hta from the previous turbo dumping particles into the engine (let alone the rest of the engine being at risk). Oil filter should catch most things, but I personally wouldn't put the hta on there, get a 14b or chebay one and throw that on while you're waiting to finish the other motor.

This is the reason I mentioned getting an oil sample done. Even then, it would still be on my mind if the sample passes.
