I changed my leaky oil pan gasket not long ago and it is still leaking. I used red rtv as the gasket and ran a nice continuous bead around the whole pan making a circle around each bolt hole. I think the two mistakes I made were not waiting for the RTV to dry before putting the pan back on, and I think I tightened the bolts too much ( I ended up breaking one of them).
I'm gonna buy a torque wrench and make sure they are right this time... how much torque do the pan bolts require? How long should I let the RTV dry this time before putting the pan back on?

Ok I've been making a list on my PC, and I'll post it up here. I'm nearly finished, just trying to make it easy to navigate to find TQ specs. reguarding; Year, model (AWD/FWD), ect...and making it alphebetical.

As soon as I've got the info in my possession, I will post up some Evo torque specs that even us DSMers can use (trust me, you'll want to see these ;)).

Just make sure you tighten em' enough so you seal the gasket. I did not "snug" them down enough allegedly and the ground electrode melted off from too much heat. I ended up with a hole in an exhaust valve and a $1000 repair bill. Thanks NGK

Could you post some pics of that valve with the hole through it. I'm sure i wouldnt be the only one to say that ive never seen a valve with a hole in it, but if you managed to do it i would like to see it. To the OP i agree with ngk's directions for tightning the spark plugs. Ive been doing it like that for 15 years:thumb: There is nothing wrong with using a torque wrench. It is not overly anal as most of us like peace of mind when we drive our cars. Also practicing good garage habits is a must. If you let yourself slide you will just start cutting corners more and more:notgood:Also this isnt steve's first campfire. When he speaks people should listen.

Hello, im going to throw my oil pump cover gasket on with my oil filter housing gasket. On a 1993 6bolt turbo block, I just need the torque specs for bolth. Also should i put a thin layer of copper gasket spray on them? Thank you.

Oil pump cover is 132-156 inch lbs
oil filter housing is the same, I just put them on snug with a 6 inch wrench.

alright i have, done this before with topline gaskets without torquing and spray and it had a vary slow drip but just enough t0 get shit dirty once again thanks for the fast reply time to go install some things

Ive looked but havent got a definitive answer on this, besides everyone saying to go buy a book. Ive got a book somewhere, I just cant find it and need to know these specs fast

Its on a 99 GST 7 bolt

Hope this helps

alright, I appreciate it guys, I just wanted to make sure before I put this thing together and it not be right,
thanks

ok everyone im putting my motor back together and i did a little research here on tuners about torquing the arp studs into the block for my head. i just want to make sure.....80ft/lbs (with the moly lube - recommended by arp of course) for the studs AND nuts right? ### the directions say to just put them in hand tight and can i step torque the head studs to say...20-60-80? i just want to get this right thats all guys. thanx!

Ya that sounds about right. i just put new bolts on my head and its holding up pretty solid. just make sure to do it steps like you said i think i did mine to 85. Just look up the correct torque sequence for your head

But thats for the studs too? like to torque them down to 80 ft/lbs. then put the head on....then torque the nuts down to the same 80 ft/lbs? i know this all sounds stupid right now but again i just wanna get it right....im running into some bad luck and i just want SOMETHING to work out LOL haha
