hey guys just the other day i failed my inspection sticker and wanna get some ideas on what it could be. I have an aftermarket BOV that does vent to the air and an aftermarket intake. After i failed i replaced the oxygen sensor up front and the cat but it still failed with some pretty bad numbers. My car also has very weak torque when taking off from a start at low rpms idk if that could have anything to do with it but thought i might as well add it in to give a little insight. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Don't run E85 if you have plastic fuel lines. Try recirculating the BOV and see if you can pass after that.

We don't have plastic fuel lines. There's a lot of people who run full e85 on stock fuel lines in our cars, myself being one of them.

As for the BOV if you have the plug capped off on the intake pipe then it's not going to mess with your reading one bit unless they have it on rollers and are building boost then letting off. If it's just a idle-test or they're not building boost then the BOV being un-recirculated and capped off will have zero effect on the outcome of the test.

Apparently, in Texas they don't tell you why you fail? In NY, you get a written report of what needs to be fixed in order for it to pass... Was it hooked up to a machine or just a visual inspection?

well as far as i know is that a unrecirculated bov will make your car idle like crap...

It should have no effect on idle unless you have a boost leak.

I know we don't have plastic fuel lines... But somewhere along the line someone may have done some work and replaced the lines with plastic (cheap). So therefore I always suggest checking to be sure before you go and ruin cheap work... haha.

I'm guessing he is talking about smog test on a dyno, and I have a friend that used to work at an emissions testing center in Denver, and he said venting your BOV will most likely fail you.

Either recirculate, or find a county in Texas that doesn't do emissions and register your car there. You just have to give them some random REAL address in that town and have them send all the mail to your "summer house." It works in Colorado, so I don't see why it wouldn't work there.

ok if im wrong try this... recirculate your bov... ok turn on your car and let it idle... now when its warm, remove the recirculating hose wile its on..!!! and see if anything changes... 99% sure that your idle will change and maybe surge...!!!!

Only if the recirc inlet on the intake tube isn't plugged. Plug that and your idle won't be affected at all.

EVERY DSM is affected negatively when venting metered air. Some are just more affected than others.

As per your intake, you can either get a fitting welded in, find a different intake (ebay), go with a GM MAF in blow through or speed density. Those are the only 2 ways you can properly vent your BOV. in other words im pretty sure your running rich...!!!!

Way to steal a quote of mine.

Habitatguy is right however. If the recirc tube is blocked off, it won't mess with the emissions as long as teh BOV isn't leaking. It's best to keep it recirculated though and it should be if you don't have a MAFT or speed density.

If they didn't tell you why you failed, either go back and find out why it failed or go somewhere else simple as that.

Thats gotta be illegal on some level.:hmm:

This really sucks because I'm failing at a car dealership where I work! This tech wnt pass me cause he's kind of a hard ass but o well. He gave me a paper with the number ill post them up a bit later. I'm sure I have a boost leak somewhere so I took it to a shop that installed my bov and intake so they can look at. It. Yes the. Cap is blocked off on the intake so my idle is pretty smooth although once real warmed up for about 45 minuted in drive the idle drops to about 750 and the poil light turns on and off until I hit the gas to up the rpms then it completly goes away

there is no smog test in texas, if I had to guess they didnt have to dyno it , they should just plug into the obdII plug. The shop that preformed the test should have given you a paper with the numbers on it and what numbers failed....please post that info, it will help alot to see what the problem is.

It is the smog test but it passes on low rpms which is I guess the idle or something but the high rpms it fails which is 2500 rpms. Its failing no or nx and co levels. Since the rpms is pretty low I'm sure the bov has almost nothing to do with it but would boost leaks cause me to fail? Anything I can check? Maybe do that seafoam although I changed my oil a week ago and don't wanna waste a new k&n oil filter. Tonight I'm gonna change spark plugs wire and fuel filter

I had the same issue .. mine failed because it was blowing out too much crap .My order of things before I went back up there was ( spark plugs and wires , cleaned my throttle body , adjusted my TPS , recirced my BOV , put high octane in for a week and drove it almost to E then put a half tank of regular gas in it before I went to test . On my way to the test I drove my car hard at about 60 mph for 10 minutes to blow out any pent up crap in my cat and it passed )

This thread has made me decide to stay away from similar threads from now on. If you can't figure out what you need to do to pass smog then you don't need a modded car. It's basic maintenance! The only people who post threads like this finally come around to say that they don't know why it failed, and that their car could have vacuum and boost leaks, but they're not sure.

It's plain laziness and an unwillingness to learn about their car.
