Thinking about saving and getting the 2004 Evo instead of buying a GSX. What do you guys think about the evo? pros and cons?

well talking about evo's on the dsm forums is better. everyone isnt just like "get an evo!!", people actually pick between em.

just incase you didnt know, that 240sx is a slow POS, youll have to do a engine swap to make it worth anything, and if its not one of the RWD ones....just stay away.

all 240's are rwd. yea the 240 may only run a 16 flat, but my current car runs a 18.5. plus 240's are fun as shit, big time drift cars. and yes, if i get a 240 it will get a rb25.

Slow down kiddo. Don't trash rotaries if you don't know anything about them. The RB25 swap is very expensive and time consuming. Go SR20. Much easier. Also, the Evo 8 does not go up 5K a year. Mitsu has been very good about changing the car and adding needed items. I would bet that the clutch problem will be taken care of.

As for Evo vs. GSX, I would say GSX. Here are my biased and totally personnal opinions why:

2G GSX looks better
Cost significantly less
More cash for going fast
2 Door cars look better
Lighter ( barely )
Years of proven abuse versus Evo being new to market

Go out and get ready to spend 30K on the Evo, then turn around, buy the GSX. Now you have around 20K for going fast. My personnal philosophy is to buy used no matter what, let someone else eat the depriciation. :thumb:

a buddy of mine has had an Evo VIII now for about 6 months...with just a boost controller, SAFC and full HKS exhaust hes putting 360 hp to the ground...not too shabby in my opinion...LOL....however, hes been through three transfer cases already...the first one went with 126 miles on the odometer...he wasnt even out of his breakin period...not the factories, he just likes to take it easy on a new car. The other two went just driving around, not under racing conditions. The boys over at Turbo Trix are having the same problems and they have been reported elsewhere. Turbo Trix is currently working on installing a 1st gen transfer case on the evo as we speak. The stock evo one also causes a bog situation on launches....another friend with a close to stock SRT-$ ate him up on a launch...and he can drive really well so its not him...but i can only speak for what i know...other than that the car is awesome and handles like a champ. :thumb:

I know this is complete DSM sacrilege, but the WRX STi is the same price and much more overbuilt compared to the Evo. Yeah yeah yeah, its a Subie. Same price gets you 2.5-liters and a stronger tranny/clutch and more flagrant looks. OMG

Not that I would own one.:p

You laugh but they had a guy overseas take a Swift(AKA Metro) that had an AWD and make it do low 11s. I think they actually call it the Cultis over there.

Dude, what are you talking about. We have Subie guys over here grenading trannys left and right when they start adding real power to them. The STi barely nosed out the EVO in SOME tests and overall the reviews said the EVO was a much better driving experience.

Oh and BTW heres a FMIC shot of that Metro/Cultis :)

The one major difficulty with getting accurate info on these cars is the fact that there are alot of people buying and thrashing these cars. This results in Jimmy Highschool getting his new black STi and promptly blowing 1st/2nd/3rd out with a redline drop clutch launch. How reliable a car is heavily depends on the owner and driving style. On paper its a stronger tranny, in the real world, who knows.

I'll say it again.

Not that I would ever own one. :p

The results I'm talking about are from real tuners and shops not jonny highschool.

Well I been reading that most Subie's have stronger clutches from the factory that tend to hold more power and grenade the tranny.

And EVO's on the other hand have crappy clutches that slip badly thus saving the tranny from grenading at 5k drops from complete morons.

Surf over to EVOTuners and see for yourself. Most of them are replacing their stock clutches with upgrades.

evo vs. sti, i'd take the evo. it just has that sexy hood scoop and carbon fiber spoiler. yum.

How about a JDM Supra? Or a FD3S? Mmmm. But in all fairness, the DSM is king. For the price and the plateform you get, it can't be beat. 75K for an imported Skyline will go a long way for an DSM. Hell, I could build 3 DSMs for that much.

Well, it's easy to say "just get the Evo." But there are things I miss about my GS-T. The stereo in the Evo sux, easily fixable but shouldn't be an issue for the price tag.

The Evo also feels cheap. Get into the DSM and close the door, it feels solid. Do it in the Evo and it feels like a tin can.

As for replacing the clutch, the jury is still out on that one. We'll have to give it a bit more time before we know for sure that the aftermarket ones are holding up better than stock. ACT does make one for the Evo but most guys go with Exedy. When I do mine I think I'll stick with ACT just because I'm familiar with them having come from the DSM world. So far I’m not hearing much about the aftermarket clutches dieing an untimely death so that’s promising at least.

I’m hearing a lot just lately about the xfer cases going out on people, but 9 times out of ten if you ask the owner what fluid he had in there, it isn’t the fluid that is recommended in the manual. People think that redline fluid will make things better but in this once instance it seems to kill what it’s meant to protect.

If you stop and think about it, you could make a GSX into the Evo's equal with some money and work. 16g turbo and supporting mods (new injectors, fp, exhaust, intake, & so on), fmic, and totally rework the suspension and you'd be there. I think it'd be more expensive to do it that way but you'd keep the feeling of quality from the DSM that just doesn't exist in the Evo.

One thing I love about moding the Evo is that there is no such thing as boost creep! If you compare the wastegates you’ll see why. You can very easily toss a 3” turbo-back system with no cat on there and not have to worry about it. Boost creep just doesn’t exist.

As for the warranty on the Evo… good luck. It really depends on who your dealer is and your relationship with them. Some dealers are cool and recognize that you are the customer. Most of them are under the corporate whip, however. In the later case you’ll be hard pressed to get them to honor anything that could possibly be blamed on owner error. The stories about people with clutches burning out at less than 5000 miles are true. Rare, but true. And it’s also true that most of those cases are horror stories of either not being covered under warranty or having to pull teeth for weeks while the car is not being worked on as the owner tries to force the issue to get Mitsu to cover the damage under warranty.

As far as I’m concerned at this point, I don’t have a warranty on my car. Unless there is a recall I will never let any Mitsubishi dealer or mechanic see my car again.

All in all, if you are considering the Evo, these are some issues you need to factor in. If you want my opinion I’d say go for the Evo if you plan to work on your car yourself and you favor performance over style. I love my Evo, but there are several things I miss about my Eclipse (may it RIP).

Sorry for the length!

[edit] One small addition; the stock ride is quite stiff for a daily driver! It doesn’t have to be that stiff to generate the handling it does. It will cost about $2k in aftermarket suspension components to soften the ride and keep (well increase actually) the handling performance.

I was looking around and found an evo in NJ for 17,000. Its got 11k miles, 100k warrantee, 3 in catback, MBC, Liquid filled gauge and turbo timer...Best part is a girls selling it. PM me for details cuz this is an amazing deal that Id hop on but Im looking at like 350 dollars a month for insurance. Ill give you guys the ebay link and you can take it from there. THe auction completed at 17k and no one bid so i emailed her asking how much she wanted she said 17,000, including the 3000 deposit and shipping to werever you are... AMAZING DEAL-
