Hey guys, I'm Jim. I'm a newbie to the whole DSM world so please, be kind :p Anyways, in the near future I may possibly have the opportunity to buy a new car and I definetly want a DSM turbo. Are the Evo VII's or the Evo VIII's faster? Also, would I be wasting money by buying an Evo when I could put the money elsewhere, like into a GSX and investing in performance upgrades? My goal is to eventually have an everyday driver that is around 400whp. Thanks in advance.

I know there are a few aesthetic (sp?) differences. As for whats under the hood, I think they're similar.

Plan on importing an Evolution 7 though?

My thing is this...With a brand new evolution, it is just that - brand new-.

Warranty, new car smell. First owner. 0 miles.

If I had the financial opportunity to buy one, i certainly would.

1g or 2g GSX's will be cheaper, but it is a used car. You will have to put some money into it.

I think an Evolution is more of a daily driver than a 400 whp GSX. We'll see how long that one lasts :thumb:

get GSX, you could have 400hp in a GSX and still lots of money left over if you have enough to get a evo 8. Heck, you could have 2 400hp gsx's maybe.

Definetly good points. One more question though: How much cash would it take to get an Evo VIII up to 400whp?

I'm not sure on this, but I think the Evo VIII is 272hp stock? I don't know at what psi that is but it would seem logical that the turbo/engine may be able to hand a little more than a regular GSX turbo.

The evo VIII is running 19 psi (it drops to 16 close to redline) on a really nice 16g, where as a 1g or 2g dsm runs somewhere from 8-11 on a much smaller turbo (2g t25 250cfm, 1g 14b 405 cfm).

Either car is going to take quite a lot of work to get to 400whp.

The EVO will be newer, roomier, and handle better stock. However, I do like the styling of Eclipses/Talons better. Another nice thing about the EVO is the tranny can hold more power reliably.

so from a performance perspective im guessing the Evo would be a better choice?

Hey I said I was new... and by reading these other people's posts, it's apparently not.

Alot of guys are biased towards their DSM but put things into perspective. A stock 2G GSX will do around 15 sec or more 1/4 mile. A stock EVO VIII will do 13.2. A 400HP modded DSM will not be reliable enough for a daily driver and don't listen to anyone who says it will because it won't. You can purchase a Vishnu Stage 1 kit for the EVO VIII for $1995 that will drop the 0-60 from 5.0 sec. stock to 4.4 sec which is faster 0-60 than a stock Corvette Z06. If you have the money, seriously, don't even think of getting a used DSM, get the EVO VIII.

i hate to be the jerk here (i don't have as much practice as some of the others :p), but do you know what a turbo car feels like to drive? does your 240 have an sr20? get a dsm (awd or fwd) and get used to the stock power before going any further.
seriously, when i got my awd, i was coming from an 86 nissan sentra (some 1.6l thing), and a 92 tempo with a 2.3l. the power of my new dsm was awesome... for a few months.
ask anyone around here, i've got huge power goals (and finances to reach them)... but i'm doing it a step at a time so that i can control the power i'll be making.
just some thoughts...

no the 240 isnt an sr20det, but its a 2.4l with some bolt ons and its around 170whp. And yes, I've been driving fast cars for a while....bmw 740i and also always in a friend of mine's vette. Thanks for clearing up the wheel horsepower thing too Heavy :)

there are a variety of ways to make 400whp with the 4g63... i'm currently trying to see how much i can make with the 14b. i've decided that when i do get as far as i can with the stock turbo... i'll be built and ready to throw in something big and hairy :thumb:

haha awesome. so guys, can you enlighten me a bit? what are the turbo's ill run into in the dsm world and whats the difference?

eh...no vendor bashing here.

i will say that between here and evolutionm.net, i have heard quite a few bad things about vishnu performance. You'll have to find out for yourseld though.
