Thinking about saving and getting the 2004 Evo instead of buying a GSX. What do you guys think about the evo? pros and cons?

do your research man. if i am correct they both have something of the same motor and both are awd. only big difference i think is one is 4 door other is 2 door. plus you better have hell of a job to pay for evo. buy if you can afford it go for it.

hmm, that is an issue. damn 4 door...but gsx's are old and rare while evo's are new and under warranty.

Well, yea, that and the Evo has +61hp (although it's 271 is probably under-rated, and actually more like 300hp). The Evo is waaaaay quicker, in a different league entirely (vs. stock GSX).

Rumours abound though that the clutch is too weak for it. I burned it just by going WOT from a 30mph rolling start.

Other rumours suggest that paint isn't very durable, and that the bumper mounting points rust.

That's what I've read on the Evo forums anyways. Take it for what it's worth.

It is a blast to drive... :thumb:

The ONLY reason why I'd go with the EVO.

Im kinda bias because i have a GSX, but the EVO is an awsome car. Though the 2G is a better looking car, the EVO totally out handles the GSX, stock for stock.

To get a GSX up to par with a stock evo, you would put more $$$ into it then you would pay for the EVO.

Warrantee doesn't cover the clutch though. And with some people reporting it failing every 5,000 miles, and at $1,000+ to replace... ouch.

Don't get me wrong, some people say they beat the heck outa their EVO, and the clutch is going strong at 20,000+. But it's a big enough issue that "DID MITSU SCREW UP THE CLUTCH?" is a popular poll item over on the Evo forums.

If i had the cash, i would have gotten a EVO 8 over my GSX, but so would most people. EVO is like a GSX's big brother. The cars are alot alike, same engine and all, just the evo has bigger turbo, better handling blah blah blah..but its costs 30k more. If you plan on doing a complete overhaul with your mods i would say go GSX but if you plan on doing just some basic stuff go EVO, if you can afford it, dont spend forever saving for one, there not THAT much better then a GSX. Or you could look at it like this, if i spent 8k on a 97 GSX and put all the money i have left over from saving up for the EVO into mods...what kinda car would i have??? A BEAST, but some people dont like to look at it like that since a EVOVIII is brand new and stuff, but i look at it like that. But having said all that i wouldnt trade or sell my GSX for anything now that i have one, but i wouldnt mind having a EVO to keap it company:thumb:

i need a new car so badly but dont know what to get...what about replacing the stock clutch with a high performance one? still burn up quick?

hmm, GSX's are just so hard to find tho. i dont want to spend 10k on a used car. i dont even really want another used car. but theres nothing else out thats good besides the evo and 350z and a friend of mine already has a 350.

Im gonna agree with ya on that one. Although I would love to have an EVO8 to play with. :)

BTW cant that stock clutch be trashed for an ACT 2600?

well here is the last that i am going to say. if you get an evo don't be like all these other idiots and trash it doing 140 around a curb. i have seen all kinds of pics where guys take this car and demolish it. i have ridden in a evo 8 and it is sweet as hell. from interior to exterior it is amazing but i just like the look of a stock 97-98 gsx for some reason. call me dumb or flame me all you want but i know what i like.

Some owners did just that. Fixes the clutch probem, but then if ANYTHING fails, Mitsu will say your aftermarket clutch caused it and won't cover it.

It's really ashame... I want one sooo baddly, but I can't afford to take that risk. Maybe in a year or two they'll upgrade the clutch/tranny.

evo's go up in price like 5 grand each year and they aren't even getting that much better. in a couple months ill look around for a 2g gsx and if i find one in great condition i might try to get it. unless something else comes along, like a supra!

i really like the evo tho cept for the 4 door fact. i'd be the chauffer still...

Evo is the new improved GSX. They share the 4G63 motor but internals of the Evo are updated with advanced components (sodium filled valves, forged and lightened pistons, etc.)

I dont like the body of the Evo VIII though. It looks boxy, like an econo-sedan. Four doors doesnt bother me though I would prefer a 2 door. The 2G Eclipsse, IMHO, is one of the better styled cars from Mitsubishi (if not the best). It's 8 years old now but it still looks better than its 3G counterpart.

Price? Actually it's not that far from the GSX when it was brand new. A $30K car nowadays is the trend as you got Accords and Camrys touching the $25K pricetag.

i was lookin at rx-7's before but since the rotary engine sucks i decided to stop lookin at them. supras are overpriced, skylines are too rare and expensive, gsx's are damn rare but hella nice, evo's and sti's are expensive, srt-4 is domestic. my friends were tryin to convince me to get a sentra. but look at sentra's, they're slow....altho they have nice skyline seats LOL.

dude, rotary dont suck...LOL RX-7=beast. How much displacement does a 3rd gen turbo RX-7 have?? 1.5L or something?? and look how fast it is stock. Only thing bad with em ive heard is the overheating, shouldnt be that hard to fix with some aftermarket toys, and no one can work on them, ya know like local mechanics, or something like that.

If it's between an Evo and a GSX, there's no comparison. Just get the Evo. You said you'd get a 2004, though. I heard something about Mitsubishi only importing 1500 Evo's in 2004 which means huge dealer markup.

i know the rx7 is a beast but the seals break and to replace em you need a rotary specialist to tear down the block and rebuild it. and unfortunately, i dont know rotaries.

Perhaps, but Peter Farrell does. :thumb:

EVO VIII all the way. The EVO VIII puts any AWD DSM to shame in every performance category and has a warranty. Hell the stock boost setting is 19 psi!!! Looks are subjective though. I like the looks of the EVO but some may not.

I would go with a GSX. They look much much better and easily capable of getting to the EVO level. Slap on a FMIC, 16g and crank it up to 19psi.:p. That warranty would be real nice though.
