(This post may be a bit lost in this forum... but oh well. This is where I am relegated to since I'm a NOOB. Not that I don't understand the reasoning behind the post requirement - keeps the goons away. But it can backfire in that I feel like posting random crap just to get that post count up just so I could start participating meaningfully in the tech sections.... spamming to become legit. But I won't do that I'm too nice. So here I am.. in the newbie forums. What am I? Some greasy 16 year old?)
Hello all!
My name is Randy and I own a Lancer Evolution 1 here in Canada. It is a Right Hand Drive import from Japan.
I am posting here because I am looking for a 0.666 DSM 5th gear
Yes, you read right, I am doing the opposite of what DSM owners who are often in search of a higher fifth - I am indeed looking for a lower fifth. ...just thought I'd make sure to emphasize that my needs are different and opposite of the typical cool DSM guy.
As you know the EvoIII has fairly close 1-4 ratios and a really tall overdrive fifth. The Evo I is actually a bit more closely spaced, with a taller 1st and 2nd. However, both transmission gearsets share the 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. For more detail on this click this link. However, what this translates to me as an EVO 1 driver, is that the 4th to 5th shift results in nearly a 2000rpm drop! Bigger than even the 2nd to third shift! While great for cruising highways, I find that in a track with a long straight and 4th is not enough, the shift to fifth absolutely kills me. I have calculated that with a 0.666 fifth (from the Evo's fourth gear with 0.862) the RPM drop becomes a more tolerable 1600rpm.
Fifth / 5th Gear Replacement - Lower Ratio Options - Evo123.net - The early Lancer Evo and DSM source
I have detailed practically the same line of musing in a forum post linked above.
So all that said I have two questions:
-Does anyone know how to go about ordering them through Mitsubishi? Looking for part numbers and such.
-And just for the sake of tech info, do you happen to know how many teeth count for the input/intermediate gears for the DSM?
I am doing a center differential swap in the next week (Cusco Tarmac Gear! yaay!), and it would be great if I could do everything in one tranny drop.
Thank you for the time!
Randy
