(This post may be a bit lost in this forum... but oh well. This is where I am relegated to since I'm a NOOB. Not that I don't understand the reasoning behind the post requirement - keeps the goons away. But it can backfire in that I feel like posting random crap just to get that post count up just so I could start participating meaningfully in the tech sections.... spamming to become legit. But I won't do that I'm too nice. So here I am.. in the newbie forums. What am I? Some greasy 16 year old?)

Hello all!

My name is Randy and I own a Lancer Evolution 1 here in Canada. It is a Right Hand Drive import from Japan.

I am posting here because I am looking for a 0.666 DSM 5th gear

Yes, you read right, I am doing the opposite of what DSM owners who are often in search of a higher fifth - I am indeed looking for a lower fifth. ...just thought I'd make sure to emphasize that my needs are different and opposite of the typical cool DSM guy.

As you know the EvoIII has fairly close 1-4 ratios and a really tall overdrive fifth. The Evo I is actually a bit more closely spaced, with a taller 1st and 2nd. However, both transmission gearsets share the 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. For more detail on this click this link. However, what this translates to me as an EVO 1 driver, is that the 4th to 5th shift results in nearly a 2000rpm drop! Bigger than even the 2nd to third shift! While great for cruising highways, I find that in a track with a long straight and 4th is not enough, the shift to fifth absolutely kills me. I have calculated that with a 0.666 fifth (from the Evo's fourth gear with 0.862) the RPM drop becomes a more tolerable 1600rpm.

I have detailed practically the same line of musing in a forum post linked above.

So all that said I have two questions:
-Does anyone know how to go about ordering them through Mitsubishi? Looking for part numbers and such.
-And just for the sake of tech info, do you happen to know how many teeth count for the input/intermediate gears for the DSM?

I am doing a center differential swap in the next week (Cusco Tarmac Gear! yaay!), and it would be great if I could do everything in one tranny drop.

Thank you for the time!

Oh, and....

I feel like posting random crap just to get that post count up just so I could start participating meaningfully in the tech sections.... spamming to become legit. But I won't do that I'm too nice.
....all bullshit posts will be deleted, so it doesn't really matter. Spam-post repeatedly with meaningless fluff to become a proven member (meaning continuing to post useless crap after myself or any of the other mods have removed a significant amount of garbage posts from your account) and that's a surefire way to make sure your account becomes perma-noob'd.

Just a friendly F.Y.I. from the staff. ;)

Your best bet is to either contact TMZ performance, from the link Justin provided. Or you could buy a trans needing rebuilt from the classifieds whenever one shows up.

But honestly you are better off just getting the few parts you need from a shop or Tim(TMZ Performance).

I know Jacks Transmissions does a lot of Evo 3 5th gear upgrades. So I would imagine he would have some DSM 5th gears laying around.

I may not know ordering one from mitsumishi im sure you can get one from jacks transmission. The guys there are very knowledgeable about just about all mitsu's. Im sure if you gave them a call or shot them and email they could get you one.

I'm not bitching. Just wondering out loud how to break the 50 barrier without being penalized and undermining my own progress.
Read the rules lately?

All you have to do is help out the community....you've said you're experienced, now go find a thread or two in the newbie forum where someone is seeking advice on a topic you're familiar with and provide a detailed answer or a link to a place that the member can get help. That's all you have to do.

What we don't want are one-sentence replies or "I agree" posts...those will be removed for sure; but you've proven yourself quite the talker so I'm sure there's no need for me to remind you about one-sentence posts. :p

Tmz had an ad on a local site a little bit ago listing off a whole bunch of parts he had extras of. I'm sure he's got one laying around somewhere.

I realize that this is somewhat unrelated to your search, but how do you like that taller 1st and 2nd of the Evo I? Do the shifts come up pretty quick? How's launching? I realize that you have a shorter final drive, but I'd like to get some first hand experience as to how the gears feel.

As for something actually related to your search, you may also try to hunt down a 0.690 5th gear. That to me seems to be the best 5th for a more dedicated track car. Highway driving would suck, but if its a track car who cares?

The shorter 5th comes from the FWD 1G trans if I remember right. I have one set here, and a couple sets of the AWD ratio.

P.S. - I envy you for finding a Cusco tarmac diff.

This guy has been talking about us the dsm guys behind our backs on the evo123.net site how we are slow and dont help haha maybe we should not help and then he has something to complain about LOL

While you're right about the 1G FWD being shorter, that's actually not the gear I was referencing. The FWD has I believe a 0.714 ratio. The 0.690 comes from the JDM Galant GSX (AWD Non-Turbo) if I remember correctly.

Yeah, you're right. But we did have the Galant GSX here in 90 and 91. Just more rare than finding a VR4.

Aw, gotcha. Forgot about that actually. It does make me wonder though how hard it is to hunt down one of those .690 5th gears then... I'm sure Mitsu isn't and probably hasn't made any in years.
