New DSM owner, 98 Eclipse GS... Been working on fixing all the nickle and dime stuff, but have run into a annoying problem. When trying to fill the tank, the pump will click off continuously. It happens when near empty, with 1/4 of a tank, doesn't matter. If I just barely squeeze the trigger I can fill it, but obviously pretty slow process. I assume there is probably a plugged purge or evap or something of the sort, but wanted to see if someone could point me to the most common cause for this (if this is any sort of a common issue for this car) or a diagnostic procedure for it. If a plugged evap canister, does this car have a replaceable filter in the canister or is there an effective way to clean it out?

I see... Any details? Like how to check it, location, how to replace, part number? Appreciate any help in this so I can get it resolved and not have to spend 20 minutes filling up... ;)

Also when filling up try backing up the nozzle a bit. So instead of fully in leave it out an inch or so. That helps mine out.

Yeah, I tried just about every angle and depth I could figure out, from barely connected to trying to put extra pressure on the collar with my other hand, the only thing that made a difference was to just fill it up slowly...

Yeah I would then try to see if there is any obstructions on the vapor vent hose....or switch gas station :p. Good luck

Yeah, I tried different stations and different pumps as well... :)

How do I access the vapor vent hose to check if it has a blockage?

Take a look at the fill neck. My wife had a Stratus years ago and we had to get the fuel pump replaced. After that, we had the same issue you're describing. The issue was the angle of the fill neck. I loosened both ends, rotated it a bit, and the problem went away.
