New DSM owner with a few questions.

ok so i just got the car and its got a couple issues....

1.) the VSS is damamged and needs to be replaced
2.) the harness for the front o2 got caught and shredded so that needs replacement
3.) it needs a waterpump and im gonna do a thermostat at the same time.
4.) Halfshafts are shot so i need new ones there.
5.) Sputters at low RPMs...not sure where to start here....


now this is all very simple replacement for me as i have been a tech for multiple shops around town as well as myself on the side for years...

however im having issues finding out some info... the vss is on the trans and i got a replacement already however it will not work...are they vehicle specific or what?

also for the o2 how do i figure out if the car has cali emissions or not? or do i need to find the harness that goes from the top of the engine to the o2?


thats all i have for now...ill be updating if i come up with any others

A VSS should be a vehicle specific part. Where did you get your replacement one from? And to see if your car was built with california emission standards, check the emissions sticker that should be on your hood. It should say if it meets 50 state EPA requirements or CA requirements (although i cant remember if DSM's had the two different standards or just straight 50 state legal).

replacement vss was some place online honestly cant remember right now....

ok now if the car comes up federal emissions, would it hurt to use a cali emissions o2 sensor? i dont see y it would hurt but idk honestly

Mmmm an O2 sensor should not matter, it should be 50 state legal no matter what. And somewhere on the emission stick it shhould read something like, meets federal emessions standard level XXX or meets California standard XXX, or something similar. You should just be able to go to a local auto parts store and get an OEM O2 sensor and if the VSS is the correct one... you may have an issue in the gauge cluster itself or in the wiring that transmits the signal from the VSS to the speedo.

ok so i got my waterpump today...gonna start on that and hopefully have it done later tonight...

for the VSS i found out the issue...it is the wrong one...the one they sent me is for a 4G63 and doesnt work in the 4G64 something about the resistance or some bs like that so i am still needing that...

I have figured out why its sputtering at low RPM, its because with the front o2 being unhooked the cars running really rich and not burning off the extra fuel so its falling over itself...so that is gonna be why im running thru so much gas...that harness is all i need to fix that issue...the o2 is still good just not hooked up basically...

thats all for now...hopefully i will have some more updates later that the car is actually running again...

I was just about to mention the front o2 being unplugged . Glad you are getting through the problems. Now just to tackle those halfshafts, which shouldn't be too bad. Also when getting a new car I always do a extensive tune-up, never hurts.

Yeah it is unplugged and unfortunately I need the harness that goes from the top of the motor to the o2 itself. I have searched high and low and cannot find a replacement even at the junkyard. I need a little extra cash and I might have to attemp a dealer unless anyone is parting out a vert that would be willing to help me out with some cheap parts.
