I recently bought a 99 rs for my first car(420a fwd) and have been working on pulling the old engine,I have a new to me one I’m gonna drop in but I just wanted to know if I HAVE to remove the transmission when I pull it? I’d prefer not to but ngl I’m kinda learning as I go.

I usually pull the engine and transmission together, it's way easier than fighting with the little room you have. You will need to hold the transmission side with a jack and yank it at an angle to lift it out smoothly. I just did this about a month ago and pulling them both was very simple.

I've done it both ways, and don't have much of a preference anymore. If you're working alone it may be easier to leave the transmission in the car, but an extra set of hands can help you bolt them back together outside of the car. If you pull the transmission too, make sure you remove the ECU first. I remember that getting in the way since I didn't have anyone to help guide the assembly out. If you decide to leave the transmission in place, invest in an engine leveler. That makes installation so much easier.
