I personally think the engine bay loooks very clean allready.

I have one suggestion that I did not see above: Sticker deletion.

You could remove the yellow stickers on the radiator cap and the radiator fan. Also the sticker on top of the battery, MAS, and PS reservoir cap (can't see if the sticker is still there or not).

But honestly, it looks great.

Wow I never thought about that. That's a pretty good idea. Cheap (free) and effective

Ever considered polishing the lower heat shield or the engine support brace (mounted above the first exhaust runner)?

Oh, and make sure you've cleaned the hood support. Sometimes people forget the little things that others immediately notice and it can take away from the overall appearance.

Looks great, but you could go for a color scheme. Red and Billet looks great, black of course matches, but go for something original too... That makes it WOW too, when someone sees something else that they haven't seen on another DSMers setup.

Alright, so I've been waiting for parts to come in (gasket set) so I can start my build but since I have so much time I've done a couple of things. I've taken my intake manifold and completely polished the plenum part and then painted the entire manifold black. I've taken the fuel rail, polished it as well and used a clear blue to make it appear chrome blue, and also the inner portion and lip part of both stock cams. I've polished the inside/outside of my throttle body elbow and painted the outside black. Also polished my side mount. All of this of course with paint guns and real paint. I'm going to be replacing all vacuum lines with silicone blue ones and replacing all wire loom with new black ones and basically making my engine look "clean". My motor/ tranny are black and I'm going to be painting my valve cover electric blue once I finish polishing it. I'm polishing both sides of the high flowing t-25 turbo (ha) as well as the O2 housing. I've of course ported the exhaust manifold as well as everything else. I know this is all stupid to do but I have nothing to do until my gaskets get in. I will not be running these parts forever because soon I will be buying real cams, new turbo, fuel rail and the list goes on but like I said, I have nothing else to do. NOW, I think the engine bay is extremely ugly. Correct? So I have plans of running the entire engine harness under the intake mannifold and just soldering some extra wire in to make it to the injectors, sensors and whatever else needs extensioning. I'm also going to redesign the throttle cable and maybe hide it as well. I also like cruise control so I'm going to do something with that. Has anyone else done this? I've seen honda's do it time and time again and I've searched the forums and gallery for pictures. Anyone? Also, are any of these wires sensitive enough that the solder and extra/ differant wire will effect the preformance of the sensor/injector, whatever? If anyone wants to see any of my parts also, just ask and I'll post them.

Sounds like it could be very nice as long as its not over-done. Indeed this is a popular practice on Hondas and also VWs. I'm very curious to see how this will turn out. Be sure to post some pics now and as you progress along. :dsm:

Okay, I'll take some pictures of all the things i've painted and cleaned up. Like I said, I'm still waiting for parts for my motor build but they should be here any day and hopefully I can get the motor in and start this experiment fairly soon. Has anyone done anything remotely close to this OR moved anything around? Anyone have any ideas either? Post some pictures of what you have done!

Okay, I searched the other day for shaved engines but I must have used "bad" keywords. Sorry about that. Thanks AWDfrank.

Cruise control is gone now though and a few other things have changed.

I need to get some new pictures in but, if your AWD relocating the battery from the fron to the rear will clean up a bit of space. Also with the install of my Magnus SMIM I didn't want to use that L shaped wire holder that bolts to the stock intake manny on 1g's. So I pulled if off ditched the L, Then flipped all the injectors so that the area where the harness attaches would be straight down. Then put all the wires under the intake manny, in some nice black wire loom. Makes it look really clean. Also coil on plug systems are best for removing 10mm spark plug wires and a huge coil pack...Then I completely removed all un-nessary wiring from the Passenger front side side of the car like the maf connection, which is in the middle to rear due to maf-t, un-wired the bcs..and anything else I could find. Depending how far you wanna go you could always rip out power steering, I don't have it, nor do I have a manuel rack, I like the way it feels and you can actually feel how the road curves and such. AC has been gone for a long time now, less lines there

There are many things to do If you want a cleaner engine bay. BTW for you 2g guys I'd reccomend Relocating the Fuse Box from under the hoodthe the glove box, it may be really really tedious but the clean factor is the best, I know that there was a board member on here that did it, and he posted a picture of all the wiring that he had removed which was probably enough to wrap around the car enough times.

Found a few pics

What all can I do away with under the bonnet?
I want to keep the power steering as I may do some sprints/hillclimbs.
I have already binned the A/C and the ABS and moved the battery to the boot area. The car is in Ireland and is race only so what can I do away with emissions wise?

Cheers.

i know removing the balance shafts will give you a few extra ponies, if you search this site i'm sure you will find detailed instructions on how to do that. Also I would suggest removing the cat if your not planning on getting this thing emission tested. Infact mine is just one straight 3" to the back. If I find anyting else i'll get back to you.

Hahaha, binned/boot/bonnet.... hahahaha.... I'm sorry. I always get tickled at words like this. Especially when they say it on top gear. I've even gotten to where I call the trunk of my car the boot.

But just for reference purposes, over here we say...

scrapped/trashed for binned
hood for bonnet
trunk for boot.

Charcoal canister can go, ac can go, PS can go (if you don't mind a manual rack), egr can go, fps can go. Then, ditch all associated lines. Cruise can go. Then, run Speed density, and ditch a maf and wiring, bov return, and be happy with a spotless engine bay.

I've got a lot of that gone save PS and stock maf. I think i have a pic in my gallery.

EGR, FPRS, charcoal cannister, all the vacuum lines around the throttle body and intake manifold. Relocate the battery to the trunk. It just looks better and frees a lot of space up.

I don't know if a 1g clutch is the same, but with the 2g you can bypass the entire stock line and run a single braided stainless line from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder, removing that resevoir thing. Then you can remove the rest of the stock line if you manage to get access to it.

Alternator relocation bracket, to put it in the position of the stock A/C compressor.

Entire stock A/C system.

Power steering pump/lines/cooler.

Hey guys,

We're about half way through cleaning out the engine bay of our 1g that we're building to be a drag purpose car, we've already gotten rid of the power steering, radiator, some vaccum stuff windsheild wipers, stuff like that, but we're wondering what else we can tear out...just a newbie question!

thanks!
