I am painting my engine bay black and i herd of some type of rubber material you can spray over metal and it will stick do any of you know what this is? Also is there any thing else i can do other than repainting it?

thnaks

a good complete engine clean up... then armor-all every single lil piece of plastic/rubber/hose/wire cover (dont know the exact term) should do the trick. I would not recommend painting any hoses, since it is most likely to crack and peel as soon as they twist or bend... no good

for metal pieces, take a look at this tech article

Ive got my motor out for a rebuild and I'm trying to get the engine bay looking clean. The paint in the engine bay is comming off when I spray degreaser on it, and it needs to be re-painted anywhoo. Any tips on what to do? What kind of paint should I use? So far I have the wireing harneses out of the way, and am working on getting all the oil and crap off the metal. Also Im thinking about taking out the firewall blanket. Is this a wise idea or really dumb? This car is pretty much an all street car that will see occasional track usage.

i was thinking of having mine rhino lined the next time i pull out the motor(**knock on wood that wont be for a while**) it should withstand just about anything you throw at it and since your car is black already it would fit right in. if you are just planning on painting it w/ reg paint i would pull everything out possible, degrease , and the spray down with a pressure washer, that should get all the dirt out of the hard to reach places as well.
good luck w/ your project.

well if you use paint, be sure to use VHT Paint with as high a tolerance for heat that you can find. I.E VHT 1200 means the paint will last up to 1200 degrees farenheit.

it dont have to be high temp and anything special, you can use the same paint and clear that goes on the exterior of the car, just dont use a real cheap generic clear it wont protect as good as a more expensive higher quality of clear (ppg is the way i would go, for clear any way)

I'm gonna paint the brackets for the clutch and brake fluid black. They look all rusty and stuff. Any other sugguestions while I'm taking stuff apart? :rocks:

I polished up the engine hangner a few weeks ago, looks so much better.

Still have to tune my cars later too, I hate waiting for paint to dry

Take all aluminum parts and get them anodized black. :thumb:

Should be an option from the factory...waiting for paint to dry sux. The brake fluid bracket was pretty rusty.

I don't know how DSM left those out of the cadmium plating bin. They look like crap on all the cars until they're painted.

But man, if you're going to use paint, use paint!!

any ideas would be awsome!
thanks

If You really want to do a good job, pull the motor. It will only take about 30 minutes to pull the engine and tranny out, just make sure you label where everything goes.

I would think if your going to paint the engine bay, you might as well pull the engine so you do it once and just do it right. You could paint around things but it would be better knowing everything is painted all nice ;) . Let us know what you decide to do and post some pics after your done:thumb: Good Luck!

EDIT: Grr Amazin' Wasian beat me by secs

Wow. Thirty minutes to pull the engine and tranny out!:thumb: 1g's must be a lot easier than 2g's because Ive pulled my motor 3 times and cant do it in 30 minutes.

hey thanks i guess ill just pull the motor it will be a good thing to learn, i have a jdm galant 91 vr4 6 bolt in it so im not sure if anythings special with that swap that i should kno about???

I agree. Pulling engines and trannys aren't difficult, but it sure as hell takes me more than 30 min. I've spent more than 30 min on one axle nut to pull a CV shaft to pull a tranny....

alanstalan - I helped build a show-n-go B18 powered Civic a few years ago. The car was originally forrest green and we painted it ice blue metallic (NSX blue). When it came to the engine bay, we debated the same thing you are. Pulling everything from the firewall and sides of the engine bay would be easier and quicker, but I don't think it would have turned out nearly as well as if we pulled the engine. So, we did decided to pull the engine and have everything sprayed. It turned out to be very beautiful. I would have to recommend taking this route.

Please post back when you are done! I want to do the same thing. I saw an old 60's Orange Camaro with a flat black engine bay at a car show years ago and thought it was the bomb. Been wanting to do something like it ever since.

hey thanks guys
yea my car will hopefully be sick and rep all the dsmers out there, my goal is to be a 12 sec show car and i mean SHOW CAR not just a little system and a body kit, im building a one off interrior to hopefully make a mag cover, and im only 18 and getting really excited about getting my first car done for this show season!!!! a coupple more months it should be done and pics will be all over the site so keep a look out!!!!! :dsm:
thanks!

About a month ago, due to a blown bearing my engine blew. So now i am getting the engine rebuilt because i know a guy with shop so i am getting a deal since i have 2 pay for school . we think the engine blew because the owner before me never really "got" on the car like i did, not like i ran it like i was driving an f1 car but i got on the throttle a little, while the engine was out found out the turbo was shot too so i got an evo 3 big 16g turbo with an install kit and a ported manifold this is where i need anyone who would like to contributes help, now that the engine is out i am cleaning the whole engine bay i took most of the parts out and cleaned them in a parts cleaner for the most part they still look good but not that brand spanking new look to it, one of my friends who is an auto tech (im still in school) and also paints cars we are gonna spray most of the parts since i am going to be running an evo3 turbo i wanted to know if anyone knew what the color of the evo3 valve color is also what i should paint all the other parts i was thinking either a glossy black or silver my car is white, i also want to paint the middle rear taillight (if you can even call it that) so i just want to know what everyone thinks about it any suggestions or ideas, anyone else ever been here before all inputs are welcome and appreciated:dsm:

if your gonna paint the bay or other parts a different color get this stuff called aircraft remover\cleaner. you can get it at any auto parts store. you spray it on stubborn paint or grease and it almost instantly takes it down to bare metal. my buddy and i used it on his integra when stripping down the paint and cleaning the engine bay. works awesome but dont get it on your skin OUCH!!
