i was wondering if anyone out there has any luck with ebay 16g turbos? anyone with good dyno numbers or 1/8 mile? just curious. i have a ebay big 16g turbo/mani, and i'm in the process of dyno/tuning.....? hoping to get good numbers....!!!thanks

ive had an ebay 16g turbo that i bought early 2008, ran it til early this year, and replaced it with a usd mhi 16gturbo that i got here at dsm tuners, guy said had 5kmiles, didnt have any shaft play, my tuner ran it for about 30-40 miles and it blew some seals etc, so had to put the ebay 16g back. still running strong, got the mhi rebuilt by turbo lab, and has been using the mhi 16 for about 3 weeks. no problems so far. the ebay 16g i bought is just sitting in my garage just in case i blow up this turbo or something. i will dyno the car sometime next month with the MHI, and tuner already raised the boost from 13lbs to 20lbs 91 octane, i was doing 13lbs when i bought the ebay 16g since i dont want to push it but had it dynoed around 2009 and did 238hp at 13lbs boost, and tracked the car at 1/8 mile maybe 5-6 times. it held pretty good.

I'm definitely keeping mine as a spare. Money I paid balancing it and having it clipped 10 degrees I could have bought a good used 16g. But I'd have to say I'm happy with it. Kinda off topic but you know where to find a big smic?

Everyone who owns a name brand turbo will tell you the ebay turbos are junk, and 90% or more of the people who ACTUALLY run ebay turbos have little to no problems with them. The things you hear are usually " My friend's friend's brother had one and it blew up on him.", but never really direct sources.

There are tons of people running them locally here and I haven't seen any threads pop up on my local forum about "my ebay turbo just failed". If you order an ebay turbo, just check it out before you install it. If it binds, has shaft play, etc.. it will fail, but that is true with any turbo.

this is all too true, my wifes c70 2.3 hpt turbo went out got an ebay turbo because oem was like 1600 bucks td04-16t anyways we have 20-25 thousand miles on it no problems

of course someone who spends a crap ton of money will tell you anything else is junk but from my experience i think they are decent

Yea they're wonderful until they turn into shrapnel and take out your engine. Did some testing on one last year- put roughly 500 miles on an Ebay 16g at 15lbs, then 500 miles at 23lbs. Roughly 1000 miles in the shaft bent at 4000rpms and 23lbs of boost, split the wheel in half, and dislodged a 2"x2" chunk of the compressor cover. I managed to find half of the wheel in the air filter, half of the wheel in the intercooler, the shaft that bent/snapped made it to the TB, and the chunk of compressor cover was nowhere to be found. This grenaded cylinder 4 and left me with a junk head and junk block.

Definitely worth saving $100 or so on, to spend $2k to rebuild the engine. This turbo was properly oiled and brand spanking new when it was put on. It's not about balancing it or doing anything like that to it. The casting they use in the Chinese turbos is the lowest quality pot metal they can possibly use. The inside of the wheel looked like a sponge the metal is so porous and poor quality and the compressor cover was even worse. It was like looking at the surface of mars.

I've bought 16g's for under $100, it's not worth your motor to go with these inferior quality turbos.

A good part of what I do is provide a rebuilt OEM product to those who have tried eBay garbage and had it fail. It's how threads like this are created: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/tur...idnt-last-100-miles-already-has-out-play.html

If we've learned anything in the past 5 years since this thread was created it's that eBay junk is still eBay junk....'nuff said. It will always be a debate from those who put reliability on the line to save a few bucks, therefore I don't see the point of leaving this thread open.
